Another Treo siting on TV

I know that a few of us writers love seeing our Treo used in TV shows and movies. I am watching Ugly Betty on ABC's website which allows you to watch full episodes of their shows for free via streaming. I just paused it to post this. I was pleasantly surprised to see (3 minutes in) one of the stars of the show (the Editor of the magzine) using a Treo. It looked like a 700 series, but it could have been a 650. Either way it's great product placement for Palm that "The highest rated new show this season" featured a Treo. I'm sure it will be making more appearances. Isn't it nice to see hollywood take notice of something we here at PalmAddict already know;)

Where in the world is the Treo 750v?

Today is the day the much hyped Treo 750v was due to make it's splash in Europe on Vodafone's network. It's the slimmer, antenna-less, Windows Mobile Treo that created a buzz, but what happened? I was expecting to see reviews of the phone on all of the big sites today, I saw none.

I expected to see Treocentral's forums buzzing with posts from 750v owners reporting personal reviews, "unboxing pics", all the things that normally happen when a new Treo comes out, but not one.

Where in the world is the Treo 750v?

I checked Palm's UK site, Vodafone's site, just to make sure today is still the day. It's available today for purchase online and in stores. It's pretty shocking that none of the big sites are posting reviews, and forums built around this device are suddenly quiet.

Is this Treo "too little, too late"? Stay tuned.

StyleTap saves me again

I have been really enjoying my 700wx, and have been using it much more than my 700p. I was lucky enough to get a copy of StyleTap for review, and must say it has helped me a lot. Here's an example:

Tasks is one of the most used apps I use, and Windows Mobile just doesn't come close to the Palm OS version of Tasks. I tried to make myself use it, and even tried another program, there's a huge untapped market for to-do lists with Windows Mobile. I missed having my tasks, and I wasn't keeping track of things I needed to do. I decided to try and copy over the Tasks app from my 700p using Filez to a SD card and install it on my 700wx using StyleTap. The icon was there, but it wouldn't open. I gave up, and forced myself to use the Windows Mobile task app. I came across an old Tungsten T2 and decided I would try the same thing, this was the older version of Palm's PIM To Do List. The icon appeared on my 700wx, and sure enough it opened. I now get to use the Palm OS version of the To Do List that I have come to swear by. Like all things Palm it's just intuitive, and Windows Mobile needs to work on this. I just wanted to share with you guys that the thought of switching platforms can be a bit scary, but thankfully StyleTap makes the "darkside" a bit brighter by allowing you to use Palm OS apps.

StyleTap, run Palm OS on Windows Mobile

I just saw Paul's post about StyleTap and I can't recommend this app enough. The creators were kind enough to give me a copy to use with my 700wx, and I am blown away by it. It lets me run Agendus on my 700wx, and most of my other favorite Palm OS apps. This application is especially helpful for Palm OS users switching to Windows Mobile, there is no need to give up your favorite Palm OS apps. I was told by the developer that StyleTap will be releasing version 1.0 in October, but are still offering a discount before the official release, so save some money and buy it:) I plan on writing a full review on my site and PalmAddict. The best way I can put it is, consider it like Apple's BootCamp, you can run Palm OS on Windows Mobile. No need to re-boot :), just open StyleTap and the familar Palm OS launcher appears, and any Palm OS apps you installed are there and run just like they do on a Palm OS machine. Stay tuned for a full review. Have a great weekend everyone!!

I'm an addict, I use a Treo 700wx and 700p

I've always known I've been a PalmAddict even before Sammy made it official and took me on to be a writer for the best Palm site. I want to thank JWinters for really keeping us upated on what's going on in the world of Windows Mobile Treos. I've gotten some great tips from him for my 700wx, and I am glad there is someone here to focus on Treos running Windows Mobile.

Currently I am using a Treo 700wx, and a Treo 700p. I was going to give one up, because who needs 2 top of the line cell phones, right? Sprint made it very easy, and economical for me to keep both of them, I was ready to give up my 700p since I am now really enjoying my 700wx. Sprint gave me a great discount on obtaining the 700wx for $399, and add a 2nd line to my account. It just seemed crazy to have 2 phones, so I called them and was going to cancel my 700p, but decided to ask how much it would be to keep both since I loved both. After a few minutes the rep came back to me and said that since I was a loyal customer, etc. I would be charged $70 a month for both phones with my current plan. This would include my voice plan, unlimited text messaging, and Power Vision. I was already paying $50 for just the 700p, so it was too good a deal to pass up for $20 a month, so here I am with 2 Treos.

I am a huge Palm OS fan, but have been blown away at what Palm did with the 700wx. I have been able to do so much more with my Treo than I ever have been able to do before. Here's an example:

I was so impressed at what I was able to do. I could never have done this on a Palm OS Treo.

I wanted to download a youtube video of one of my favorite shows, Big Brother to my Treo (I know Sammy is a huge fan of the UK version), but I was off site at class , not on my computer, and had removed TCPMP from my Treo 700wx. I found a work around. I convereted the youtube video on my Treo 700wx (directions from a thread on Treocentral), then downloaded the TCPMP app to the desktop I was working on. I emailed the TCPMP app to my Treo 700wx, opened and installed it, and was able to watch the video. It was an "ah-ha moment". I had this huge smile on my face, I could have never done this with a Palm OS Treo, the 700wx has multitasking going for it, and Palm gets huge props for the amazing job they did making it more Palm like.

I hope I don't sound like I am putting Palm OS Treos down, trust me, I'm not. I carry both with me, there are just some things I prefer on my 700p, and just some things I prefer on my 700wx. The point of this post is that obviously I'm an addict, secondly I am glad to see Palm having succes with both platforms. I am more proud that Sammy has taken the initiative to fully cover both Palm OS and Windows Mobile and not get caught up in what some sites do and just focus on one, and usually put the other down.

I want to thank Sammy, and all the contributors for making this a positive site, and no matter what platform you choose, you can be sure PalmAddict will be covering it. I am very proud to be associated with this site. Keep up the great work guys!!!!

Treo 750v thoughts

I just read Treo Editor, PJ Arts' thoughts on the Treo 750v, and agree with the points he made. We've seen this in the past with Palm, don't mess with success, ie. don't change too much. People want thinner/slimmer/sexier devices (we're talking about a phone) and Palm put the Treo on a diet, sort of. The good news is you've got a thinner Treo, the bad news is that expense is due to a smaller battery. Thankfully Palm lets you swap out batteries so you can carry an extra one with you, I use a Seidio 2400mah battery with my 700p and 700wx, and I highly recommend any Treo owner (hopefully 750v owners will be able to use this) get one. Enough about that. After having the Treo 700wx for a week now I am starting to see how Windows Mobile on a Treo finally gets it right. If you feel like the Palm OS is currently a bit old school for you, I can honestly tell yout this isn't just another clone Windows Mobile device. It took Palm adding their special sauce to Windows Mobile to make this long time Palm OS user see what's possible with Windows Mobile, while still having that Palm-esque feel to it. It's great to finally see a "diverse" family of Treo's, and this will only add to the success of the already successful Treo brand. I'm glad to see that the European market will be getting one helluva Treo. I haven't used a Treo 750v yet, but I can tell you that after using the 700wx Europe is going to fall in love with the Treo 750v.

Threaded messaging application from the Treo 750v will come to the 700w/x

As always the Treocentral forums provide some great Treo news. When The Treo 700wx spec details got leaked it showed that it was going to include a threaded SMS application that many people know and love from the Palm OS Treo. This never happened, but today we saw that it does exist, at least for the Treo 750v. Now word comes that Palm will be releasing an update that will include this application for the Treo 700w and Treo 700wx.

"From Andrew at TreoNauts:

Quote: Malatesta - Palm confirmed this morning to me that the Treo 700w|wx will indeed soon have the upgraded 'threaded SMS' application - just no timing yet for this release..."

"Palm's world-class ease of use on Windows Mobile" really exists

I received my Treo 700wx last night and am happy to report that it could be the best Treo Palm has released to date. I have made it no secret that I prefer the Palm OS to Windows Mobile, and always have found the Palm OS to be a better OS for me. After using the 700wx I am starting to realize that Palm has done an amazing job of creating "Palm's world-class ease of use on Windows Mobile", it wasn't just marketing spin. For the first time almost every part of Windows Mobile can be used one handed, just like we've gotten accustomed to with our Palm OS Treos.

It also seems that Palm did a great thing by adding the extra RAM to the 700wx, it makes a world of difference. For instance I was able to listen to XM Radio via Internet Explorer while I was surfing the web via Opera, when I decided to send a friend a text message, write an email in Outlook Mobile, and schedule some appointments without closing one application or feeling the system slow down. It's great being able to "multitask" without any of the drawbacks that we've come to expect from trying to do more than one task on these handheld computers.

One of the most surprising, and pleasant things about the Treo 700wx is how fast web browsing can be on a mobile device. When I moved to the Treo 700p web browsing was finally fast, but with the 700wx it's unbelievable. This morning I decided to see how fast it was, and I was shocked. I ran a DSL reports mobile speed test on my 700wx, and thought I was seeing things. I downloaded a 1MB file, and the results page came back quicker than I've ever experienced. The results came back with 1016 kbit/sec, I quickly showed my co-workers so I could confirm that I wasn't seeing things. I tested the connection speeds a few times today and received different speeds, but none went below 400 kbit/sec. All day at work today I have used the 700wx as my main device, relegating my Treo 700p to my messenger bag. Will it stay there? Stay tuned.

Treo 700wx is on it's way

I just spoke to Sprint Retentions about my 700wx, I was having problems actually getting them to ship my phone. I ordered it on Friday, and they gave me a very nice discount. I spoke with a Retentions rep last night who was trying to track down my order, and I'm happy to report she did. She got my phone out last night with overnight shipping and just gave me my tracking number, she said I should get it tomorrow. That made me happy, but I want it today!!!:) Me being the PalmAddict I am, I went right to the UPS site to see if any information was available, and there it was the "out for delivery" message I have come to love seeing time and time again. I am very pleased that Sprint hooked me up with a great price on the 700wx, and also resolved the problems I was having, and getting it out to me so fast. I'm looking very forward to trying out Windows Mobile on a Treo. I never thought I'd be this excited about a Windows Mobile phone, but I keep envisioning "The Palm experience on Windows Mobile" and plan on letting my fellow PalmAddicts know if there is merit to that statement, I have a feeling there is. I am already planning on ordering a Palm WiFi card to use with my 700wx. Stay tuned.
