Wicked Witch Has Eaten Oz (and Asia)

Nyc868
[From TJ Netherlands] Looks like the good folks down under will have to do without webOS.  Palm has confirmed that it has no plans in the near future to release any webOS products in Asia Pacific markets.

“At this moment in time, we do not yet have any plans to launch the Palm Pre or any of our new WebOS products in Asia Pacific. Our focus right now is to establish a strong presence in North America and Europe. However, we do not discount the possibility of offering this new range of products at a later date.

It is therefore not a rumor that Palm has significantly reduced its presence in the region to one of operational support to our existing customers requiring our in-warranty services and technical support for our sold products.”

Read it and weep after the jump. http://www.precentral.net/

Palm Gains on Talk That Nokia May Bid for Phone Maker

Nyc705 [From Hans] Speculation is growing that Nokia may well make a bid for Palm. "Palm Inc., maker of the Pre mobile phone, gained 7 percent in Nasdaq trading, a jump that some analysts attributed to speculation Nokia Oyj may bid for Palm. Palm, based in Sunnyvale, California, rose $1.12 to $17.07 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Palm has climbed more than fivefold this year. Nokia, the world’s biggest mobile-phone maker, has fallen behind rivals in software for smart phones and buying Palm would help close the gap, said James Faucette, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities Inc. in Portland, Oregon. Espoo, Finland-based Nokia is spending $3 billion a year on software research and development, more than 10 times Palm’s R&D budget, he said." Read in full.

I Love My All-In-One Phone

[From Stuart Hunt Louisville, Ky] I'm using my mobile device mostly as an all-in-one gadget: PID device checking email, browing the web (when without laptop, keeping my gCal up-to-date, syncing google contacts, etc. However, I'm also using it as a GPS navigator, and listening to alot of podasts and music. If I could afford a data plan, I'd probably do alot of Orb streaming too!
