[From Myke] Hi Sammy, I've decided that I can't wait for Android 2.1 for much longer and so I have decided that I will use a custom ROM for my Hero. I decided that I'd give you a quick overview of the steps I have had to go through, this isn't a guide to be followed, more of something for those that are interested to see how much (little) work is needed to root and 'flash' your Hero.
I'm not exactly very clever when it comes to 'unofficial' things like this, I mean, what does SDK stand for?! (I know now..), so I have a friend guiding me along.
Ok, so first I've had to check my Firmware version, and then go to Neil and Theresa to get InstantRoot.apk,
I am using an application called AppList to save a list of all the applications on my phone, so that I don't loose any of them.
Ok so now I'm using InstantRoot to 'root' my phone, I guess? It's successful...
I've just flashed the recovery image using a FlashRec program
Now I've restarted the phone and booted into recovery mode, confirming my phone has now been rooted (see image).
That's it, now I am downloading the custom ROM of my choice...
I've just installed the ROM and can confirm that my Android phone is working excellently. I am so happy with it. The bugs there were before seem to be non existent now! I would really recommend this to anyone that can't wait until the end of June for the 2.1 update for HTC. There are plenty of guides out there on the internet, it's just finding the one for your level of understanding. My favourite feature so far? Voice. I am able to use my voice to type, it's excellent. :)
Thanks Sammy and keep the hard work on PA Up. :)
