[From JB

and as their software becomes more like a desktop OS (Android, even
iPhone), big service providers like AT&T and Verizon will be forced to
open up: they will only provide the service itself, and you decide
how and with what you use it with. You don't make a contract, you
don't need a SIM card, all you need is a credit card and a
compatible device. With time, the barrier betwen WiFi and cellular
service will become less and less evident, and it will eventually
disapear. It is still a long way to go, of course, but it has already
begun.
