Finding the 'perfect' case for a Treo is tough.
Not because there aren't enough choices out there...quite the opposite.
-Do I want a small footprint?
-Do I want screen protection while I am using the phone?
-Do I need heavy-duty scratch and impact protection?
-Do I want leather, rubber or metal?
-Do I need an aspirin for my headache???
Every choice involves a compromise, based on what your personal style most requires.
In my case (no pun intended...really), it is always around heavy-duty protection and full-time screen protection. I have never been happy reading my Treo screen with a permanent screen shield, and detest the dreaded 'facial oil' after a phone call (ugh!).
I currently prefer the InnoPocket 'Magnum' Case, which is like Batman body-armor for my Treo; but, it adds a lot of heft, and is not a good choice for in-pocket carrying.
That is why I have been waiting for someone to produce a 'crystal-case' for the Treo, and Boxwave has finally done so. The Active Case for Treo 650 is a very nice choice for those who want hard-shell protection, including a clear screen cover, along with a 'convertible' belt clip...but want a slimmer profile.
Only time will tell how it stands up to the long-haul, but my initial impression is VERY good.
-very light
-very small form factor
-very precise fit
-very ingenious design, that allows full-time access to the keyboard, and a clear flip-up cover for the screen.
The Treo 'sits' in the bottom half of the case, and you simply connect the top half for 360 degree protection, that allows full-time use of every switch, button, connection and the keyboard. This kind of configuration also eliminates the inevitable wearing and scoring of the Treo's silver edges, from pulling it in and out of traditional case designs. During 1-handed Treo operation, the case feels secure and solid, despite its negligible weight and small form-factor. Nice!
I also find that the case is form-fitting enough to fit into my Arkon car mount, while I am driving.
The closed case feels very smooth and comfortable in the hand, and does a fantastic job of giving unimpeded access to each key on the thumbboard. The flip-up screen cover is also a great touch. The Palm III series had a built-in screen cover (although it wasn't clear), and I have always missed it on subsequent models.
There are other typically smart 'Boxwave' touches:
-The metal base for the convertible (i.e. removable) screw-in belt clip nub is embedded into the plastic, which provides a much lower profile then similarly endowed cases.
-There is a built-in SD card holder in the rear of the case, but it has been designed in a way that doesn't dig into your hand, while you are using the Treo.
The clear plastic provides a major WOW! Factor, but I wonder about shock absorbency, since it lacks neoprene lining. Since I don't intend to use my Treo as a test subject, I will take Boxwave's word that this is not an issue.
Bottom line: Boxwave again proves why it has earned a reputation for well-designed, quality products. The Active Case combines the total usability/small footprint of the leather 'shell' cases, with hardcase protection and built-in screen protection.
This case should recieve serious consideration from any Treonaut seeking a new (or additional) case for their wee beauty.
