I've been very busy

HoldonIn the likely event that you didn't notice my disappearance, i've been busy. My new/several month old Job (Web Developer), keeps me very busy during the days, and very tired on the weekend. However i haven't forgotten about the palm community. In fact i spend practically all my 'spare' time with the good folks on the 1src forums.

Anyways some of you downloaded my "Hold On" Application, and thank you for doing so. But that was version 0.0.4, and a lot has changed. It's now upto version 0.5.6, and i need your help. Hold on now features the ability to control Pocket Tunes and Aeroplayer from with the application. But due to my Handheld situation, i don't have a full version of aeroplayer, so any users out there with aeroplayer 5.5, this is your call to arms, click the link below, and use the info in the readme file to get your feedback back to me. And even if you don't have Aeroplayer, but enjoy listening to music on your palm handheld, give it a try.

So check it out here

Please remember that this is beta software, it's pretty stable, but unexpected things may occur, Backup your device first just to be safe. If you don't have backup software, try NVbackup, if you have a newer NVFS handheld.

Till another time, enjoy your palms

Ever tried using Pocket Tunes(Or another popular music player), with a palm/palmone handheld? Most likely you have. But have you ever tried doing this while carrying the device in your pocket?
This is where it gets messy, your tracks will start skipping, the volume will go up and down, basically it's not fun.
Well i've been working on a solution, it's Call Hold On. It's been in beta for about a month, and used by a handfull of people. Well after a little work this morning, i'm releasing version 0.04 RC1. Expect the feature set to get better sooner rather than later.

To operate it, all you have to do is tap the huge "Hold" button, while pocket tunes is active in the backround and leave the app running. The hold feature will only work while the application is running sadly. I won't bother to tell you what the big "Pocket Tunes" button does. If screen blanking outside Pocket tunes is activated within pocket tunes, the screen will be turned off after the number of seconds pre determined by Pocket tunes.

It's only been tested on a Palm T|X, but it should work just fine on all OS 5 devices that suffer from a lack of a hold button (T|3, T|5,T|E,T|E2 etc.).

It's released under the GPL, so it's completely free of cost, and the source code is availible on request.

Download it Here

in the rare event you find bugs report them here . And if your that way inclined, you can see how Hold ON came to be, and what i used and did to create it here

Meet Richard, A Happy Palm User

Vs
I found this doing my usual round up of the palm sites.

Richard, was new to PDA's. Having never owned one, he decided to start with a Windows mobile device. As such he, bought himself a Dell Axim 51v, incase your unware of the specs, think Palm T|X, but bigger, with compact flash support and windows mobile 5. Well Richard, ended up hating his axim with a passion, he returned it after 3 weeks. Not detered by the Redmond gang, he got himself a Palm T|X. You'll never guess what happened next, well i'll put it in his words...

"I personally believe that the Palm TX is a well designed tool that does what a PDA should do. The Axim x51v is an expensive toy that has too many system and/or program crashes to be suitable for serious PDA functions."

It put a smile on my face, especially as i actually considered a Axim 51v, mainly for the vga screen.

A Palm's not just a device, it's a way of life.

Fancy a Treo on the cheap?

Treo650_27
Myself and a few other "addicts" have posted before about Expansys uk's B-Grade offers, but today it's truly crazy. There are 20, 18 of which are half price. Coming in at a very affordable £171 for a Tri-band, GSM unlocked refurbished Treo 650 with a months warranty. On the topic of the short warranty, chances are, if it works for the first two weeks, it will be fine.
Infact as i'm writing this, i'm half thinking about buying one, however i can't justify the purchase, i really don't need a smart phone, while my T|X is still around. Plus with the Treo 700P coming soon...
But if you aren't taken by handheld greed, and actually need a decent phone, and a new pda, this might be one for you.

Find out if you need a treo 650 here

I just came to my senses, and bought one no Treo for me :(

What a difference a Keyboard makes

All_together_now
Do you remember those expansys deals i raved about a couple of weeks ago? Well i finally took them up on an offer. Sadly here in the UK, you can't order B grade products online, but must instead call them up. However there is nothing really wrong with that, it's nice to actually speak to someone, rather than interact with a peice of javascript.
So what did i buy? A Palm Wireless Universial Keyboard, or is it Palm Universial wireless keyboard... But basically i got a keyboard for my T|X. Since i first got a palm Clie, i've always wanted a Keyboard, i used to spend hours on Ebay trying to hunt down the elusive sony KB100, which would often be in excess of 200% retail price. Thanks to expansys i got my Keyboard for only £24, a steal compared to it's usual retail price, around £40 (you will come to learn that i like bargins).
Ontop

Now a great bargin, is all well and good, but what does it do for you? Well it transforms the way you use your palm. First off, you have to work out how to transform it, which takes some figuring out. You slide to the left, lift the top, unfold the keyboard and lock in place, and finally raise the thin metal bar, to hold the pda, easier said then done for the first time. Once it is open you have a keyboard which for the size of the thing is massive. The key spacing is not that far off that of desktop keyboard, and the layout is fairly decent.

It transforms your PDA from a nice notetaking unit, to a full fedged word processor, perfect for letters, long emails, and general book writing, plus best of all, it's black and matches my T|X in colour (Yeah, i know the T|X is more midnight blue, than black).
I originally bought my T|X as i couldn't comfortably afford a lightweight notebook (kind of like the one we are giving away ^_^). It has fulfilled this role well, however there are times when a keyboard would be nice, heavy note taking is one of them.
If you are interesting in buying yourself one of these keyboards, checkout a couple of the reviews i found belowSidebyside

3 Palms and a geek; my palm history

Palmforlife_1
Every day we talk about cool things to do with your palm, but today i'm going to talk about why i have a palm. I've been a Palm Addict since christmas 2002. At the time i had to commute to go to school in south london, from my home in hertfordshire, an 80 mile round trip. It took almost 2 hours on the train each way. So i sat there for the first 6 months bored out of skull, watching everyone else "play" with their laptops, phones and other gadgets. Then i got some ideas for a novel, with 4 hours of my day being taken over by my commute, it was perfect for writting. But how, no self respecting geek would be seen dead with a old fashioned pad of paper.
The first request to my parents was for a laptop, that was laughed at, so it was back to the drawing board. Then i remembered my mum's old psion series 3, it was great till i discovered(the hard way) the backup battery was dead, and i had no clue how to get the data off it. With that the research began.
I had a only a few requirements, easy text input, desktop synchronization and most importantly word document editing. I had seen my first palm (i think it was a palm III) several years before, but not again since. My googling eventually led me to my first palm (i prefer clie, but thats niether here nor there). Why a palm and not a windows mobile device, Price. At that time the cheapest WM device(an ipaq 1940 i think) was upwards of £200, far and above my (my mum's) £100 limit. After looking at exotic handhelds like the nz series, i settled on the Sony Clie SL-10. Monochrome, 320*320 screen , 33 mhz cpu (as fast as my first pc) 7mb of memory OS4, and best of all Documents to go version 4.
Sl10_1

For the next 6 months i read avantgo, played dope wars, and even tried out Warfare inc. it was fantastic. However by the turn of 2004 i began to feel the need for an mp3 player, as a two device zealot, i refused to embrace the ipod wave. So i began thinking of an upgrade device, another Clie of course. The launch of the TJ-35 fell perfectly inline with my birthday, and only cost £50 more than my old device. It had a color screen, a 200Mhz cpu, 32mb of memory and 3.5" headphone jack, it was perfect. It even had a Hold button.
Tj35_1

3 Months later i heard the news, Sony wasn't gonna make anymore clies. I had always said my next device would be a TJ-37(like a tj-35 but with wifi and a camera), but with production halted by the time upgrade time came around there wouldn't be any brand new devices in retail channels. T|3's were cool, but they're not clies. So i decided to wait it out, i considered importing a VZ-90, buying a used TH-55 for 110% the retail price, getting an OQO(don't ask how) and even lusted after a E|2 for a while (Who doesn't want 17 hour battery life). Basically you name it, i consider it.
In September of last year, i headed to university. I began to rely on my clie more than ever, taking notes, listening to music between lectures or while crawling though the law library. My friends loved me because my notes where the best, and completely digital(cut and paste anyone?). But it's age was starting to show, the battery life was dire with the backlight on, it used Memory sticks, and the stylus was way to small (think toothpick), i used a old pen instead (with a screen protector!), plus there was no way to get the stuff on my clie off my clie without doing a hotsync, which is kinda useless when your away from your computer.
At first i played with the idea of buying an ibook, however the average university student doesn't have £600+ to spend on tutition never mind a computer, then i heard the rumours of the Tungsten X. Wifi, bluetooth, all in an E2/T5 form factor. It was now a choice of the T|X or the Lifedrive. Moving parts in a handheld do not go down well with me. It's not that i'm a super active 19 year old, but having a 3600 RPM drive spinning up and spinning down in your pocket every 5 minutes doesn't seem clever to me. So when the T|X came out i read a couple of reviews and then dropped the cash.

Tx_2

It's still not a clie, but is almost just as good, now if only it had a Hold button...
Oh and if your interested, i haven't finished the novel after 4 years, i've written 3 chapters, but it's still on my T|X, maybe one day it will be finished. ^_^

So mine wasn't the only palm related weekend story

Moon
After reading this, from one of my fellow writers, it encouged me to share my palm story from the weekend.

On Saturday night i went out for one of my friends birthday's. After having a "little" fun i returned home around 1:30 am, but there was one little problem. My mum had left the keys in the front and back door, and sadly our doors won't unlock, or even open when there is a key on the other side.
So in an attempt to be clever i thought, "i haven't done anything weird lately, i'll just stay outside". Thankfully i had carried my T|X, so i got it out, hit pocket tunes and sat on my backstep under the stars. At first is was great, i had loads of music on my 2GB SD card, i had a coat and gloves, and no worries.
But soon the -1 C temperatures started to get to me, and i thought it was worth waking my mum up, and going to sleep in a bed, rather than on a cold step.
Sure, i had a phone, but that was too easy, and so my plan evolved. I would record a message on my phone, bluetooth it to my T|X, connect to my wifi, and email it to myself, access my email on a remote PC via Palm VNC, and transfer it to my main PC, Connect to my main PC via Sailling Clicker and play my recorded message though my 5.1 setup. That should work, right?
Well it all went just fine, i recorded the message, got it onto my main system, and readied myself to play it. I selected the file and hit play... Nothing i hit play again... still nothing, what had i done wrong?
Eventually i called my mum, she wasn't too happy about being woken up at almost 2am, but she would rather not see me freeze.
So what had happened to my super amazing plan? i turned the speakers off, in consideration for my mum.
Sometimes i'm too geek even for myself; Enjoy your Palms folks, just try not to be to clever

Wikipedia on the go

Mobiliewikipedia In case you don't want to splash out, or don't need the features of quickipedia, theres a new solution. Some nice folks from the New Zealand company Instinct, have created a specially formated version just for mobile devices. As a result it will work on almost anything. It strips out most of the media, which makes it nice for those constrained mobile pipes & screens. Sadly this one is only beta, so it's a little on the slow side but it still gets the job done.
Actually while we're on the topic of Wikipeda and New Zealand, what are people from those parts called? New Zealish, New Zealian...

Upgrade your handheld on budget

Cheap_handhelds
For those of you like me, that tend to lust after a new handheld, but just can't justify the expenditure; good news. Have you ever considered "B-Grade" or refurbished products? I bought a refurbished Ipaq 1940 off Ebay a year and a half ago for my mother, and its ticking just fine.
Since that good experience i can honestly say it's a good way to pick up what would be a normally expensive product for a reasonable price.
Cheap handhelds. that work, what's new? Well I've been deciding whether to take advantage of my T|X's Drive mode (cough) by using the included sync cable and buying a cradle or buying a retractable cable, and stumbled into the B Grade section over at Expansys, and there is a lot to choose from. Heres a brief run down of some of my recommendations.

Palm T|5 with a 30 Warranty - £155
Palm T|3 with a 6 month warranty - £120
Treo 650 without a warranty - £221
Life Drive with a one month warranty - £163!
Sony Clie TH-55(US version= no Bluetooth) With a 1 month Warranty - £139

All the ones i've listed are as "good as new", which normally means they were unwanted presents, or quick returns. Also if your that way inclined there are high end Clie's (UX-50 and a UK TH-55!). Which aren't in perfect conditon, but if you need a spare battery, screen or general spare parts can be very helpful. In general the prices are +/- 30%, lower than the original retail prices. Worth a try if you ask me. However one quick tip, be careful picking devices with moving parts (ie. T|3 & to a greater extent the Life Drive) as these tend to be the major points of failure. Either way check out the complete list here

Wi-Fi Enterprise Security Update

Photo_tx Just saw this on Palm T|X support site from palm: "Enjoy safe access to corporate networks with the Wi-Fi Enterprise Security Update (ESU) for the Palm® TX handheld. ESU lets the handheld connect to wireless networks protected by 802.1x-based security protocols."
The update looks like it supports WPA2 and a few other things, unfortunately it's not free, $5.99 is the price listed

Check it out here
