Latest development from CES, Palm has introduced something special. It is not the Linux NOVA that we are all anticipating, but rather it was an operating system which is entirely built around HTML/CSS/AJAX. It is a major shift in Palm's focus. They will make the new OS capable of taking advantage of the cloud apps built-in right out of the box. So it means that most of the processing on the new devices is not done on the device itself but on the server. The look of the new OS borrows some of the design on the Apple's iPhone interface. The new operating system has a more dynamic fluid look. The icons are more subtle and advance looking.
Going back to the new features, Palm has realized that building an OS that will utilize the power of web apps is the major direction that they need to take to stay competitive against the major forces in the mobile OS market. They are now getting there fast with the competition. Android getting the first foothold on the market, it will be a significant decision on the part of Palm development team to design the new operating system take advantage of the massive capabilities of free online services. There is no word yet from Palm about the legacy support for Garnet based applications. I highly doubt it, and probably Palm will leave it to the 3rd party developers to develop a virtual machine that will allow the new OS to run legacy Garnet Applications.
