Jon Rubinstein - "We are just getting started"
Ed pays tribute to the Palm team [and rightly so] "Here's what we've shown: the new webOS, an amazing new device, partners. All of our appllications are done with HTML, javascript, and basic Web tools -- that's all it takes to create amazing apps. Kudos to the entire Palm team."`
Ed - This platform is going to be the basis for more innovation for the next 10 years.
Ed Colligan is back on stage - "Here's what we've shown: the new webOS, an amazing new device, partners -- like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, AOL, Fandango. One partner -- Pandora -- told us it took them only 3 days to bring their application up on webOS, compared with months on other platforms. All of our appllications are done with HTML, javascript, and basic Web tools -- that's all it takes to create amazing apps. Kudos to the entire Palm team."
Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook is showing some Palm Pre love
Showing off some of their partners. Facebook, Google, Pandora, Yahoo!, AOL...and Facebook says Engadget
The Pre will be available the first half of 2009
TreoCentral - Any developer can write for the Palm Pre All apps written in Javascript, CSS, or HTML.
Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, exclusive carrier - "Dan Hesse: What I reallly like is having both the touchscreen and the QWERTY keyboard. Pre is the right product on the right network. Gizmodo has independently verified that downloads on our 3G network are the fastest available, and our coverage is the broadest."
Ed Colligan says - "Lots of smartphone bring you the Internet -- but Pre does this without walls."
WOW a wireless charger - conductive charging The Pre uses wireless charging.
Now this is pretty cool, your applications resize when notifications come through.
Wow there is an excellent music player says engadget "The music player also snaps into the dash. When you zoom out you're able to control the music while switching to other apps or working on other stuff. "This is a completely open design -- devs can write anything for it. Any controls and graphics you want. CSS, HTML, and JavaScript.""
The Palm Blog - "Matias is demonstrating the browser by looking at news live on SFGate (the Bay Area news site) -- and when you're doing this stuff live, you never know what the news will be. So he's stumbled onto a story today about "The Joy of Vole Sex." The audience seems appreciative."
The device also provides you with pop up notifications on the same lines as the G1 says TreoCentral.
Internet Browser now being shown says engadget - "You can use the gesture area to flip back and forth between pages. The rotate on the browser is very smooth."
Engadget - flip the phone sideways for widescreen browsing
Palminfocenter says take a look at the gesture activated task switcher
Matias Duarte is giving an overview of the user interface according to Palm Blog. Start with the big gorgeous screen with your customized wallpaper image on it. To start something, tap an icon. Scroll with a gesture through, say, a contact list.
Another key new concept is synergy. Data from one place should connect to data from everywhere else.
The UI looks pretty sweet.
Flick through photo's - very iPhone I guess, Flick scrolling through contact lists, says engadget.
Operating system is awesome, just look at how beautiful it is. " If you want to quit an app, you just slide it off the screen by flicking up. The device is automatically saving as you go." says Engadget
Nice slider keyboard as shown by Palminfocenter
Slider keyboard is included says the Palm Blog "The design of the Pre, says Jon R, is inspired by nature. It's beautiful. And brainy. EvDO, WiFi b/g, stereo Bluetooth, 8 GB of storage, an incredibly fast processor that's never been used in a phone before. The touchscreen includes a gesture area that's gives you enormous control easily. Really thin. More on that later. More features: 3 megapixel camera with flash, removable battery. USB 2 connectivity and mass storage support. Standard headphone jack. And the ever-popular ringer off switch. "
The Palm Pre as shown by Engadget
Engadget shows Palm web OS.
New hardware is announced and it's called the The new Palm pre!
Palminfocenter - PALM webOS is the official name of Nova!
Gizmodo - "Colligan says lifestyle and usability is more important to Palm than raw features and "buttons". Talking about the instant on capability of the original Palm Pilot as an example. He wants to try and make the technology "invisible"."
Ed on stage
[From Hans] "Palm's Executive Chairman Jon Rubinstein has just taken the stage. He's explaining that he had retired to a beach in Mexico after working at some company in Cupertino. A crew from Palm came to woo him to help Palm usher in the next wave of technological change. The next wave is clearly mobile, he says, and Palm's DNA is clearly mobile." Palm Blog
Ed Colligan now takes to the stage and is talking about improving peoples' lives
[From Hans] Thank you Hans, Gizmodo is now blogging live from the event too. "Palm is trying to seduce us with the romantic mood lighting, mellow music, and abundance of Vitamin Water. Is this their attempt at a reality distortion field?"
This on Engadget - "We've spoken to someone close to Palm just now who tells us that this won't be an incremental move. This is "the whole thing." " I wonder what that means? Whatever it is I am sure it will be exciting.
[From CliveVDV] "Sammy the projection screen is huge" Clive, you are not wrong there. The projection screen behind the stage is awesome.
Why are they showing a 'bar scene' on the video /stage in the room?
Ryan at Palminfocenter gives us a glimpse of the line.
Dieter from TreoCentral just posted an inside the room shot.
Palminfocenter report that the line is 100+ waiting to get in.
[From Glen] Glen just emailed in. "Sammy I wish Palm all the best of luck tonight, they need it. I hope what they produce out the bag will be enough to inspire the many users who have migrated to other platforms to come back. Palm were always good at inspiring so lets hope we see that tonight." Lets hope your right Glen. Thoughts anyone, email in.
[From Ryan] Sammy count the guys at Engadget in with the live blogging. Thanks Ryan. Engadget after the jump.
If you are looking for some excellent coverage of today's event also tune into Palminfocenter and TreoCentral who are live in the event. I would have loved to be there but needed to pull out last minute due to a divert to NYC tomorrow morning but I'm blogging from the sofa, keeping an eye on proceedings armed with a mug of tea and the Stereophonics playing in the background - the next best thing.
[From Hans] Jon on the Palm Blog just posted the following "Overnight, the ballroom we're in has been transformed from day-before chaos into an environment of understated elegance and simplicity. There's a crisp video screen that's bigger than several small countries, but it blends in seamlessly with the bamboo decor. And in about an hour, we can let you know what it's all about." [From Hans] The guys at Palminfocenter are ready and waiting outside the Palm press event area. As the following picture shows.
