My iPhone's Perfomance In It's First Quiz Test

I am now able to hail my experiment as a success. After downloading the Wikipanion and Shazam Apps for my iPhone, I set about testing their effectiveness in a quiz environment. I decided to ignore the moral issues raised and decided that I wasn’t cheating, just merely using technological advances to my advantage! I went along with my friends to the quiz at a local pub, where first prize was £50/$88 and, of course, my team won!

I was happy that I won the money (plus slightly giddy from the drink!) but it was the performance of my iPhone that really made me happy. The Wikipanion App did everything right for us when we arrived. We were a little late for registration and had missed round one, however with a favour from the master of ceremonies we were able to join in. With 10 pictures and 10 questions to find the answers to as well as the start of round three, we were in need of catch up! Looking around, we were against teams of up to 12 people, whilst we stood as a team of four (well 5 if you count the iPhone!). After quickly answering the questions we knew, we set about looking up the rest. I put key words into Wikipanion and found what I was looking for instantly. There were a few that it didn’t find straight away and with these I looked at the relevance search for an alternative and found what I was looking for within a minute. This surprised me as I usually find this part of Wikipedia itself to be rather unhelpful. Usually, if I can’t find the article I am looking straight away the alternatives offered never seem to offer what I am looking for, Wikipanion however was different! However, after catching up towards the end of round 3, and amassing our near perfect score (we didn’t want the use of the iPhone to be obvious!), Wikipanion became slow and unresponsive, and this worried us.

However, Google for iPhone came to the rescue and proved to be extremely quick and informative! Having survived our little scare and kept our consistent high scoring going, we moved onto the final round, music. I have two friends that are extremely good at getting song names but never seem to remember who the artist is. This is mainly due to the fact a lot of the music clips are 90’s dance tracks, which although triggers Livin’ Joy and Alice Deejay nostalgia in everybody’s minds, can not always trigger correct association with a song. This was the time for Shazam to be counted. I must admit, I had reservations about how good it would pick up music with the interference from the busy room but this was put to bed when it noticed N-Trance and set us off on a perfect score round! With a score of 46/50, our team, ‘i Think We Will Win’ won top prize (we thought we would give them a clue as to what we were doing!).
