Is That a WiFi Hotspot in Your Pocket?
Yesterday I went for a walk with my 1 year old son. He was in a backpack carrier on my back, and drifted off to sleep during the excursion. I decided to try something that would make use of both my new Treo 800w and my iPhone (which is jailbroken so that I can use it as a glorified iPod touch). I really wanted to listen to Pandora radio on my walk, but there is not a client for Windows Mobile as of yet. So, how did I use my devices to get around this limitation? On the Treo 800w I started an application called WMWiFiRouter which basically turns my EVDO Rev A.-equipped Treo into a mobile WiFi hotspot. Then, I joined my iPhone to the ad-hoc network I had created. Finally, I ran the Pandora radio app on the iPhone, and voila! To make things even more geeky (yet cool), I have loaded the Backgrounder jailbreak app on the iPhone, which allows programs to run in the background. By doing this, I was also able to check my email and browse the web while still listening to Pandora! This conglomeration of applications and tweaks proves that the limitations as to what you can do with your gadgets are more vendor-imposed than a technological hurdle. For those of you with iPod Touches, this method will allow you to have Internet access from anywhere (provided that you have a Windows Mobile device with a 3G connection). I highly recommend that you try it out!
