I would definitely recommend downloading the translator Apps for your iPhones. I really think this is a clever idea and one which highlights how useful the iPhone can be. Available in Spanish, French, German and Italian, the Apps give you some basic, yet useful, phrases which you can take on your travels with you and not feel as out of place in the country as your fellow travellers. I have always been weary of computerised translations and so these Apps didn’t overly appeal to me to start with. However, as there was a German Translator App available, I decided to test it out as I do have a slight grasp on the language. Once I opened the App the first thing you do notice is how well it is designed. Split up into several different sections, from essentials to shopping, the App allows for easy navigation. These sections are then split up into sub-sections before phrases can be selected for viewing. Once selected, the screen will show the translation and also allow you to listen to the phrase being said by pressing the sound key on screen. I then started to look through and listen to the phrases and must admit, what I looked at were correct (at least to my knowledge) and furthermore, I thought that the type of phrases being selected were incredibly relevant to tourists going on holiday. I commend the creators for putting in the ‘Emergency’ section into the App as this section has enough information to generally help someone if something bad were to happen. I would suggest dropping one of the translator Apps onto your iPhone if you were planning to go away as it is a great way of emerging yourself into another culture, as well as a good way to hold your own in a foreign country.
