[From John Gammon] The purpose for many of the portable devices in my possession (mainly hand held units--HP J 548, a J 720, Handspring Visor Deluxe, and my Palm Tungsten E2) are used by those who cannot get out to worship services with our congregation (those shut in their homes or retirement centers due to failing health or illnesses).
I record the worship services to computer on Sundays and then make it available to our shut-ins to listen to via these devices. I also have installed on these units some Bible Study software for them to use to read the bible, without concerning for their hands having to turn pages. This is more convenient overcoming problems with age inflicted pain in their hands and the dwindling strength in their limbs. Many of them have commented that it is easier to study using these devices.
While space on each of the devices is limited in some manner, the use is one which has replaced mass making of tapes for distribution. This is also a means by which our young people help--through visiting our shut-ins--and swap out the memory cards or beam a copy of the services to the hand held units. We enjoy the opportunities to visit (the elder and the youth) and discuss many things of import to each of them.
