Netherlands] Big news, Palm Addicts! Nokia has bought Symbian and will make it into an open source operating system. While most of us at this site are concerned with the various flavors of the Palm OS, Palm smartphone, and all things iPhone, Nokia remains the world's leader in the sale of mobile handsets. Their purchase of the Symbian operating system and subsequent gift of this to the Symbian Foundation makes an increasingly crowded field of heavyweight players even more interesting. As today's Venture Beat article says, "Nokia is creating a new royalty-free open platform for mobile development. Joining them in this are AT&T, LG, Samsung, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone. Yes, the big boys are coming out to play."
