[From Mike Cane] Great editorial written by James at JK On The Run entitled Smartphone makers- better wake up and smell the Applesauce and of course he offers some valid points. "Companies that make smartphones better be shaking in their boots right now as the iPhone 3G is going to continue to change the game and in fact change it faster than the original iPhone did. Geeks can rightly point out that there are many smartphones on the market today that do more things than the iPhone and do some things better than the iPhone but I'm here to tell you that it just doesn't matter. Apple realizes that the very small phone savvy (read geek) market segment is so small it doesn't matter. Apple has rightly determined that the target market of the iPhone, and it hasn't changed with the 3G model, is the mainstream consumer market that doesn't even know what a smartphone is." Again I agree with a lot of the facts, however, Mike Cane who, again puts together some interesting content on his blog emailed in to say that he too wanted to raise some interesting thoughts on the issue and he raises the Centro.
"The Palm Centro has sold over a million. But what does that really mean? I’ve seen Centros out in the hands of the general public. And without exception, I’ve seen those Centros put in a pocket or a purse and then an iPod taken out to listen to music! This despite the fact the Centro can do MP3! This might hint that those Centros could be considered a disposable item by buyers who might jump to a $199 iPhone. Why not? They’ve already been educated in how the iPod portion of it works! They’d go from carrying two gadgets to one. And probably get far more use out of the same features on an iPhone than those offered on the Centro." - Mike Cane, read in full.
