My Ideal Palm Device

Chris's recent comment made me think a little bit this evening. What would my ideal Palm device have. Hmmm, let me see. It would have to have a large, bright, color display. 320x480 would probably be good. A dynamic grafitti area would be nice so it doesn't always clutter up the screen but is available when needed. A lot of RAM would be handy to have, so it better have at least 128MB of memory and allow SD card usage for additional storage. For connectivity, it should definitely have WiFi, and Bluetooth wouldn't hurt, either. Good battery life is a must, and it should be durable (a couple of drops from desk height shouldn't kill it). Gee, you wouldn't know where I could find a device like that, would you?

Stylus... stylus... where art thou?

There is this particular article that I do not remember where I read it. It could be on Edgadget, on Gizmodo, on BoyGeniusReport, or even on PalmAddicts itself. Or perhaps on some other website that I do not remember. Since I cannot find the link to the article, I will have to rely on what I remember (or at least on what I think I remember correctly). Anyway... in that article, I read about a software (or was it a hardware?) installed on Palm or Pocket PC that will give out an "I am away" sort of message to the online status of Internet Instant Messaging software on desktop/laptop whenever the person walks away from the desktop/laptop (assuming of course that the person has the Palm or Pocket PC with him/her). Something like that. It probably rings a bell to PalmAddicts readers here. The article was not too old, and was posted sometime this year (I am sure of that).

Anyway, I was wondering if similar concept can be applied to stylus. You see, sometimes people lose or misplace their styluses (hence that is why styluses are sold as accessories, so that whoever needs stylus replacement can get a new one). Would it be nice if there is a software (or hardware) that will sound an alarm from the Palm or Pocket PC whenever its stylus is, say for example, more than three meters away from the device? In the case the alarm plays, we can know right away that the stylus is not on its place, and we can look for the stylus in the immediate area, minimizing the search area. Hopefully in that way people will never lose or misplace their styluses again. Just a thought.

My Eee PC watches movies

Eeepc_5colors2_2Been exploring what I can do with my new Eee PC.  I've found that it plays movies in Quicktime or Windows Media Player just fine.  But this means I have to carry the movies with me.  How can I use the machine to watch movies without bothering to load them into its limited memory space?

Well, it has WiFi.  So I fired up Internet Explorer and went to my Netflix account.  I downloaded the Netflix movie player add-on (unfortunately it won't work with Firefox) and sure enough I can watch Netflix instant movies just fine!  This really makes the Eee an even more impressive media player.  Since the screen is small, the quality of the movies actually looks better than it does on my 24" monitor.  This machine is impressing me more and more - and for only $399.

My favourite Palm Centro advert from Sprint

We have been talking quite a lot about Palm adverts and indeed TV commercials regarding mobile devices and this is one of my favourite Palm adverts from the Centro from last year, it's cool, tells a story and markets the Centro effectively. Well done Palm and Sprint.

So who better for Pete to turn to for advice than Tim Ferriss, author of the best-selling “The 4-Hour Workweek”?" Make the jump and watch the video.

GMail Mobile Review at The Gadgeteer

An interesting review of GMail Mobile which is pretty informative over at The Gadgeteer. "One of the perpetually unresolved debates among web users and observers alike is, "Who among the big three – Yahoo Mail, Windows Live Hotmail and Gmail – has the best email service?" Well, there’s no such debate as far as mobile web users are concerned – Gmail has the best mobile email client by far. Sure, you can access your gmail account by loading up gmail.com on your mobile phone’s browser (just like you do on your desktop browser) - but mind you, we’re talking about the somewhat-oddly-named "gmail for mobile application" – a free downloadable email client for your gmail account. We’ll just call it GMA to keep things simple. Let’s start…" Read in full at the excellent Gadgeteer website.

First Gen iPhone Shortage Hits NYC

[From Hans] It seems that in NYC there is some sort of an iPhone shortage, "At the Apple store on NYC's West 14th Street this morning, I caught this line, 30 people deep (my conservative estimate). I asked an employee what they were waiting for, and he told me "the iPhone." When I incredulously said it wasn't coming—we suppose—for another month, he said it wasn't the 3G iPhone, but "the one that came out last June." Gizmodo is carrying this story.

The extreme misuse of “happy-slapping” got proper punishments

The verdicts on the incident of “happy-slapping” attack have been announced, it was two years detention and a training order for the 15 year old teenage girl; whose name can’t be mention for legal reasons.

For you who didn’t follow the story from the beginning, here’s the short recap. A man named Gavin Waterhouse (29) was attacked behind Morrisons supermarket in Keighley, West Yorkshire by three drunken teenagers. The girl first approached Waterhouse, offering 40 pence for the “happy-slapping” stunt. But when Waterhouse refused the offer, all of a sudden Mark Masters (19) punched his face repeatedly. Then Sean Thompson (17) pulled down Waterhouse, and kicked him while he’s on the ground. The whole action was recorded by the girl for about 15 seconds, using Marks’ mobile phone.

Those three teenagers ran off laughing, left Waterhouse alone lying on the ground. He managed to go home, but not for long he died in extreme pain because of a ruptured spleen.

Even though in her defense at the court, the teenage girl said she had “no idea” it was going to be like that. But one of the witness in trial said, that immediately after the attack she told her in “a bit hyper” act like she was dancing to some kind of music. With so much drowning evidences, the girl have pleaded guilty to manslaughter after admitting to aiding the killing by filming two other teenagers kicking and punching.

But the court wishes to make an example out of this case, especially for youths like these. So while the girl sobbed when hearing her sentence, the judge explained her sin on the attack: “Your part in this cruel and revolting venture was to ask the no doubt terrified Gavin Waterhouse for 40 pence. When he refused, the others attacked him and you filmed the incident on Masters' mobile phone." Her associates; Masters was sentenced to seven years in a young offenders' institution, and Thompson was sentenced to six years' detention. The judge also added, that these teenagers are typical model of the “young, drunken, violent yob who hunt in packs and of whom the public are sick and tired".

After the dramatic scenes in the court, Detective Superintendent Paul Kennedy said something that I believe represent our feelings on such case: “You can't help but feel sick to death of the mindless violence that people seem to think they are free to use, and what the court has done today is to send a message to other young people that you can't get yourself involved in violence because you will be punished by the court."

Read on Angela Balakrishnan’s article (Guardian UK) for more details of the news.

As for myself, this reminds me of what Pocket Now’s question that Sammy has posted here at PA; the question is about “what would make you use your Windows Mobile camera more?” It’s kinda creepy question now, don’t you think? ;-p

Japanese teens like to bath with their mobile phones

I understand if someone love their pet so much, they would take it everywhere even to the bedroom or bathroom. But to take their mobile phone even when they’re swimming in the bathtub? Well, don’t you laugh yet and to think no such people exist. Because according to Sega; their research shows that there is up to 41.2% of the Japanese surveyed have at least once in their lives taken their cell phones into the bath to make phone calls, send text messages, listen to music or play cell phone games.

The survey included around 16,250 Japanese people from different age and sex. But Sega said it’s likely the teenagers who would do that, because they love to send emails and listen to music while taking a bath. It sounds like another propaganda of Japanese mobile phone brands, which they often boasted on how cutting-edge their handsets are and water resistant. So like Kotaku has said about this news: “Now, we shall spend the rest of the day wondering what exactly Sega is up to.”, we too are wondered why a game console manufacturer did that survey?

While I was hoping that it would be even more exciting news, if it was Apple who conducted such survey. Then perhaps we can expect for a water-proof 3G iPhone, …errr I actually mean “drool-proof”; cuz you’ll have to be prepared when your friends and co-workers drool over your new shiny iPhone 2.0 right? ;-D

Bill Gates is offering free software!

I’ve successfully lured you to click on this post, am I? ;-D But before you get to excited, I must finish the title’s whole sentence first: “Bill Gates is offering free software for educations in Indonesia, starting on 2009.”

Yup, that’s what the third richest man in the world right now has said during his visit at Istana Jakarta, Indonesia. I’m going to take you away for awhile from mobile phones world, to deliver a special report on Bill Gates two days visit on my home country; Indonesia. Sorry I've tricked you up there ;-p

Accepted by the Indonesia President himself, on last Thursday (May 8th); this is the second time they meet face to face again since back in 2007. The President amazed that Bill doesn’t look older, and he praises on Bill’s modest personality. And personally I have to agree, by looking at the pictures you can see that from many Microsoft executives who sat with the President; only Bill who was willing to lean forward. That shows his humbleness, even though he was once the richest man in the world.

Billinbatik After that, Bill gave a lecture in front of around 2,500 people; these include more than 1,200 college students, press, business men & woman, etc. Surprisingly they’ve made Bill to wear ‘batik’ dress, it’s a traditional dress of ours. Even I don’t like to wear one, it’s too stiff and smelly; maybe Bill is really a nice person after all. The theme of his lecture was: “Surfing the Citizen: The Transformative Power of Information Technology in Delivering Government Services”, sounds cool huh? Although I can see the President look bored to death ;-D

A funny punch-line came out from Bill, when one of those many college students asked him what his secret to be successful is. As usual Bill told everyone there that he love to study, and they should pursue their dreams, bla-bla, etc. He said something like this: “Yes, I didn’t graduate from college, but you should.” Yeah, right. If you become successful and rich, you’ll be able to justify the wrong doings you’ve done in the past. ;-p

PalmDoc is an excellent website especially if your in the medical profession and a short editorial looking at syncing my Palm’s Calendar with Google Calendar caught my attention. "I maintain a “homepage” with my professional contact details for my patients and colleagues. This page embeds Google Calendar as well which displays my clinic times and also days when I am away on leave or attending conferences. I thought it would be handy to sync my Centro’s Calendar with Google Calendar and the easiest way I have found is to use Goosync." Make the jump, informative site.

TreoFlex looks useful, plus it has just been updated to work fully with the Centro

TreoFlex looks useful, plus it has just been updated to work fully with the Centro. "TreoFlex sends out a simple text message for ignored (receiver terminates without accepting the call) or missed (caller terminates or the ringing times out) voice calls. TreoFlex will work with both GSM and CDMA Treos. You can also send customized messages by entering them in the contacts notes of a particular contact. TreoFlex implements a sub-set of the functionality of TreoProc. TreoProc has additional security features and meant exclusively for Treo 600 and Treo 650 GSM smartphones. In case you already use TreoProc, you don't need TreoFlex." Looks actually a very good program plus it's free too.

[From Eric Mann] The Pocket Now website asks a good question, what would make you use your Windows Mobile camera more? "Originally, I had thought that hardware--good hardware--would inspire me to use my camera on my Windows Mobile device. In particular, with the release of the Nokia N95, I thought that perhaps if Windows Mobile came with a nice camera, I may be more inclined to use it. Palminfocenter recently had a very good editorial entitled Ten Apps to a Better Treo or Centro which I think is an excellent reference piece. "One grievance I often hear is that the Palm OS is so out of shape and antiquated, an OS well past its prime if you will. While I won't dispute that the Palm OS has seriously outlived its prime, with a few additional applications the Palm OS based smartphones can match, and in many cases vastly outperform the competition. Whether your an old time palmhead or just picked up your first Centro there is bound to be some software you can use to liven up your smartphone. Monaco Sleeve Type Case for Centro

TreoCentral has reviewed the Monaco Sleeve Type Case for Centro. "Until recently, finding one’s preferred style of case for the Centro was not easy. After all, the Centro was a new product, and we had to undergo the usual excruciating wait for accessories unique to our particular tastes to roll off the assembly line. A few short months later, it’s possible to find just about any kind of case for the Centro that we can imagine: clear acrylic cases, rubberized skins, organizer cases, side pouches and more. Take a look at Centro Depot sometime to see the full variety of options available. Most of the cases that have arrived on my doorstep to review have been molded cases, but it’s the soft cases that interest me most. Nothing beats a good leather case. Today, Monaco’s Sleeve Type Case for Centro is campaigning for my approval. Let’s take a closer look." Read in full at TreoCentral.
