Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark is yet another PopCap game that gets ported into Pocket PC and Palm format. It is a puzzle game in which, just like Noah did, you need to match two animals to transfer to the ark while the flood water is rising. The rule is that simple, yet the game is addictive. You just use stylus to tap and match the animals. You can play the game in two mode: action and strategy. Action is more time-constraint: you need to finish moving the animals into the ark before the flood gets too high. Strategy is more thought-involving. As you pass the early levels, you will face *rocks* along the way that will be your obstacles. As with other PopCap games, as you pass levels, depending on your achievement you get different ranks. You get high resolution color graphics in this game. The graphics essentially mirror those of its desktop counterpart. They are easy on the eyes. Pocket PC 2002, Windows Mobile 2003(SE), Palm OS 4 and Palm OS 5 are supported. The music and sound effect are a bit too loud for my taste, so I usually just turn them off (the game provides option to do so), and switch to listening to soft Barry Manilow songs in the background

As usual, disclaimer: I am not in any way affiliated with the game maker company. Note that this is a mix review between the Pocket PC version and the desktop version since I do not own the game (I just use the trial).

iPhone Luv

Sometimes we take our technology for granted and just accept it as is. It wasn't until someone offered to buy my iPhone that I began to really realize how much I treasure this device. Sure it's missing a few key items (task list) but the iPhone wasn't originally engineered for business people who were constantly try to stay on top of projects. However, Apple has shown its commitment and with exchange in the pipeline, I'm sure some brilliant programmer will grant me a task list similar to what I experienced on the Treo. Speaking of Treo, I finally pulled my 755p out of the drawer and have begun reloading it with apps that I miss using. I always wondered about using a Treo as a standalone PDA and now I get my chance. It's going to be a bit awkward though. Yesterday, I had a raging toothache and refused to talk much less breathe out of my mouth. I wanted to tell my wife something and we are far too advanced to use pen and paper so I grabbed the Treo and began trying to type a memo of what I wanted to tell her. After about 6 spelling errors in the first sentence, I tossed the Treo aside and picked up my iPhone and typed out the message on the notepad in no time without any errors. Today when I went to the doctor for pain management (all the dentists in my small town are out of town for a convention) I had a reaction to the shot. As I lay recovering from nearly passing out, my wife keeps calling me because I've been gone for too long. Obviously, I'm not going to talk, so I pull out my iPhone and text away. Am I excited about a 3G iPhone...not really. (I can't believe I'm admitting that) The only thing I'm interested in as far as hardware goes is A2DP and stereo bluetooth support...oh, and the ability to send files via bluetooth. (That may actually all be software issues...I don't know.) All my other desires will be taken care of in the June firmware and resulting programs.

[From Eric Mann] Here is a tech quickie for you. The software is free – although there might be a small data charge from your operator if you download it straight to your mobile. Skype via the Gizmodo and thanks to Eric Mann for the heads up.

RMRBank (PalmTM)

I give mention to this program because it's one of my favourite financial programs or at least I should say because it is my favourite financial program and I receive a lot of emails from my readers asking what is my favourite programs. "RMRBank is a comprehensive finance package for the Palm OS series of platforms. As well as the usual functions of Transaction storing and statement reconciling, Archiving, Standing Orders/Direct Debits and Categories, it also has full multi-currency support, optional password protection, auto-counters and default transactions." unCache

[From Eric Mann] Here is unCache from PalmPowerups which looks a useful utility. "UnCache is a utility that will let you directly determine what applications get Launch code 5. "What is Launch Code 5?" you might ask. It is a launch code that is sent to ALL applications when palm is resetting. "ALL?!?!?" you might ask, "Isn't that too much?" Well...yes, so PalmPowerups fixed it. Pretty much when your palm resets every application is separately launched and told that palm is resetting. Most applications do not much care about this, and do nothing with this, but they still have to be loaded, called, and unloaded, this takes time, and on NVFS device this fragments the DbCache as well. UnCache solves all these problems by letting you select what gets run at reset. In general Alarm, Backup, and hack-like applications need this, or they will not activate automatically. This application can also siginifantly reduce your boot times, and speed up the system in general. So what are you waiting for, go FREE your cache!" PalmPowerups for the deets and downloads to this one.

Some interesting data about iPhone users

[From Hans] Just sticking with the iPhone a second, I am not too sure when Michael Mace published this one but he published some data about the iPhone and one of the most interesting findings of the study was that half of iPhone users are under age 30. "About a quarter of iPhone users said it is replacing use of a notebook computer. But given the enthusiasm of iPhone users, it's not surprising that they are also using it to replace some other technology products" It was an interesting editorial which you can read in full via Mobile Opportunity.

[From Hans] If your in the UK it seems the 8GB iPod touch and iPhone has reached it's EOL according to Engadget. "Conspiracy theorists and Mac rumor-mongerers, start your engines. According to an internal O2 memo we've received, stock of both the 8GB iPod touch and iPhone have run their courses, and have been EOL'd (at least in the UK)." Read in full.

Talk your ways on the road with Garmin’s new nuvi 880

The touch screen capability is a common feature now in nowadays GPS devices, you can even find it available in the cheapest products line-up in every major GPS manufacturers. Like when I was browsing for an entry-level portable GPS unit not long ago here in Indonesia, I found out that Mio C220 also has touch screen. But a voice recognition is still a rare feature to find in GPS products, few have it but then again the feature is not working the way it meant to be. Either it’s because of the noisy environment (maybe you’re playing that Barry Manilow collection of yours too loud than usual?), or perhaps because it’s still a new feature that hasn’t mature yet to process every words you said.

And this is what separate Garmin’s newest GPS device, it’s the nuvi 880. Looks like Garmin didn’t make many changes to its physical appearance, and more boasting about its full speech recognition capabilities. You might mistakenly think this is nuvi 700 series, which only slew accessories to differentiate these both siblings. The nuvi 880 has two forward facing speakers & a microSD card slot at the side.

Nuvimainmenu A special additional speak-up button device is connected wirelessly to nuvi 880 main unit, which you can attach it to the steering wheel so you may turn on/off the nuvi 880 Listen mode (also in the picture above). A speech icon can be seen in the main menu screen, if not in use or you say something that it doesn’t understand; the icon turns into red. And while not in use, it disappears & only touch-screen feature is enabled.

How superb is the nuvi 880 speech recognition that Garmin is so proud of? Craig Ellison (PC Mag) has tested it, and Craig was surprised on how accurate it is. Not to mention how was forgiving it is too, like when Craig said 3245 as “thirty-two forty-five” or when the smart device confirmed 151 from “one hundred fifty-one”.

While nuvi 880 still sports 4.3-inch, display with 480x272 pixels at WQVGA resolution screen. Apparently Garmin is thinking like Palm, their menus are made to be simple to access and to use. Two big icons: Where To & View Map at main menu, below them are volume controller & tools.

Just like nuvi competitors in the same market, nuvi 880 has built-in Microsoft’s MSN Direct service to provide useful informations such as:

  • live traffic
  • weather
  • movies
  • news
  • stocks
  • local news
  • gas stations & the price

Dash_expressThe above cellular services offered are not new features at all, just like the previously buzzed Dash Express, which also has it. You might remember Dash Express from our Palm Addict’s iPhone Editor; Paul Biba’s review. But Dash Express has limited search feature in it, unlike nuvi 880 where you can add deeper search categories such “Italian restaurants” or “pizza parlors” when you’re looking for a specific place to eat.

If those entire database search features are not enough, nuvi 880 is geared along with other traveler’s tools like:

  • currency & unit converter
  • 4 zone world clock
  • 4 function calculator
  • 11 games
  • music player
  • Audible audio book player
  • picture viewer

I can tell you’re etching at your seat right now, feeling that this nuvi 880 sounds like your dreamed GPS device all this long. Cause me too ;-D, but here’s the catch: it’s priced at $999.99 (the horrific numbers that resemblance to evil being ;-p). Surely with all above mentioned features, especially the speech recognition feature, such luxury experience you can get from nuvi 880 is questionably worth it. Time will bring the steep price down, and other competitors will too. Perhaps the less more than $250 priced of nuvi 700 series, is now more suitable for your budget?

Mark at the Gadgeteer website reviews Toyspring's Bike Or Die: Palm OS Game

Mark at The Gadgeteer website has done one of his great editorial reviews and this time it's for Toyspring's Bike Or Die. "While the life of a Palm Software Reviewer at a prestigious site like The Gadgeteer may seem glamorous, in reality I have to wade through a lot of mediocre stuff to find something that rings my bells enough to write about it- whether it is because I love it or I hate it. Toyspring's 'Bike or Die' ($14.95) is a breath of fresh air in what has been a rather tedious season." Read in full at The Gadgeteer website.

Aziz at TreoToday says read ebooks and save paper

Maybe we are a little late with the Earth Day thang but Aziz at Treo Today says read ebooks on your mobile device and save paper. "You don’t need a dedicated ebook reader (like the Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device) to read ebooks. Your smartphone (whether it’s Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian or even the iPhone) can do the job equally well. By reading ebooks, you also help to save trees (although you probably can’t claim that you save energy costs as well). " TreoToday after the jump.

Yahoo kicks off re-wiring project

Good news for those of you use Yahoo services this may well be beneficial. "Yahoo users will soon have one place where they can manage all the services they use on the popular website. The company has begun a mammoth re-engineering project that will unify the disparate services Yahoo runs. It hopes the project will transform the site into a vast social network where Yahoo users can quickly find and communicate with each other. The project should also aims to make it easier for web developers to use Yahoo data and services for their own ends." The BBC Technology site has the deets on this one.

Is it me or are more of you using the Treo 750

I seem to be getting more and more people singing the praises of the Treo 750. The 750 has been out for a couple of years now and more of you seem to be picking up on it. I used it in Fall of 2006 and it was my first stab at using Windows Mobile and throw in a Spectec Wifi card I was quite happy with the experience. It was only a tempory testing as I went back to using my Treo 650 but I do have to say that using the 750 was a good experience but just lookimng through some of the recent emails from readers that I am entering into the ibook throwaway I have to say that there is certainly an increase in those of you using the 750 and I am sure that you are looking forward to the rumored 800w which according to blogs and news sources such as TreoCentral, MorningPaper where I think I read it first it is very likely to include wifi.

Friday morning thought's and my game of the weekend

Morning PalmAddict friends and welcome to Friday and thank goodness it's the weekend. I had a late one last night as I was spinning tunes and as always my Centro comes in handy because what I do is list the tracks that I want to play and at what minutes and stick this data in a Memo file. I can then refer to it throughout the night. I also like to put together samples of my mixes and play them on Pocket Tunes adding notes to each mix. I do love Pocket Tunes it's one of those awesome programs that I cannot say enough good things about.

OK my game of the weekend is going to be Farkle it's from Smartboxdesign and its a game of luck and skill and is a game that I have carrioed on my Palm devices over the years and of sourse still resides on my Centro. There is also a Windows Mobile version of the game for you to try too and of course a Palm version. It's on similar lines as Yahtzee so if you have not tried Farkle you can get a trial from SmartboxDesign and try it out this weekend.
