Windows is in trouble (part. 1)

Gartner, the famous technology researcher and analyst firm have announced a quite shocking statement; that Microsoft is in trouble if the software giant doesn’t change the way they make their main operating system (OS) product: Windows. In a conference of Gartner Emerging Trends, both analysts Neil MacDonald & Michael Silver have said that there are many reasons why Microsoft is heading from a troublesome start to more serious situation, which if all can be summed up will come back to Microsoft’s incapability to make the right decisions at the right time.

Here are some of essential points of what Microsoft has done to put Windows into today bad position:

  • the development times to make a new Windows are taking too long
  • there are only few new innovations found in the new release
  • users are having inconsistent experience between new & old platforms
  • most of the time new platform means new compatibility issues.

This will get worse for big companies and enterprises, who have adopted Windows as their computer’s OS. The bigger size of a company means bigger expenses and higher cost that spend adapting to a new system, which usually takes up longer time too on large company’s system.

Your Mac is everywhere with FarFinder

A great new web service called FarFinder can make your Mac computer be accessed everywhere & anywhere using only web browser and internet connection. All you needed to do is install FarFinder on your Mac OS X, either its 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard; and voila you’re ready. After that you can use any computers running any OS with modern web browser that connected to the internet, better yet you can use your iPhone!

With FarFinder you can browse, view, download, upload and even email files in your Mac computer. All are done through the secure FarFinder website (https), and the company charges you $20 for this web based service. According to Jim Dalrymple (Macworld.com) here, you can view and email files in your Mac with iPhone; but you can’t download them to it. Even like that, I think this whole idea is really creative and can thrive further along with iPhone growing popularity around the world.

Attention all Prayer Warriors

I love a little program called My Prayers for Palm. It gives you the ability to write your prayers and designate a certain day (or days) that you want to see that prayer.  Then you are able to filter the prayers according to the day.  You can also use it for memory verses or daily confessions. I use it to put my daily, weekly and special needs prayers. I can then see my specific prayers each day.  It also has the ability to check off the prayer when it becomes answered.   It's Freeware which means all in all it's nearly perfect! I just wish it had a desktop companion and then it really would be. Maybe I should pray about that... ;-)

A light in the darkness

Today there’s an electricity blackout in my area, probably it was because of the heavy rain with strong wind. So we all have to stopped working, and I couldn’t do much either except to sat down like a good little child staring at the dark room.

Out of the blue, …errr perhaps darkness is more suitable; I pulled my Treo to check on the RSS news. And hooray, there were several news popped out and most important few were from Palm Addict. After quick reading, the electricity still hadn’t back on yet. So I decided to try my luck with Bejeweled 2 again, where as I’m on the good roll when the lights came back up running. Oh well, got to go back to work fixing those broken point of sale machine again.

At the end of the day, Treo calendar remind me of a friend’s birthday. So I sent her a birthday congrats with text messaging. That’s how I use my Treo today, how about you?

Play Blu-Ray on your iPhone

You know Blu-Ray has won over HD DVD, so it’s now the time to make the most of that Blu-Ray Disc players you have. Currently NetBlender has released a SDK kit for software developers called BD Touch, this SDK is compatible with any Blue-Ray Disc players that have BD Live technology in them. You can find that technology in players made by Philips, Samsung & Sony. Yup, you got that right, that means PlayStation 3 has it too (woohooo!)

The best of this BD Touch is it can pair both of you iPhone & iPod Touch with Blu-Ray Disc players (which have that above BD Live), wirelessly using WiFi. Not only the Blu-Ray contents can be transferred, but you can use iPhone & iPod Touch as remote control for those Blu-Ray Disc players.

Peter Cohen from Macworld.com here found out that NetBlender also has covered much other potential that can be used with their BD Touch technology with iPhone & iPod Touch, such as:

  • the capability to push digital movie
  • catalog automation of the Blu-Ray Disc collection
  • update & manage a rental queue
  • display additional info & trivia of a movie
  • turn the Blu-Ray Disc into games with iPhone/iPod Touch as the controller
  • view fan-created content in sync with the Blu-Ray Disc

Wheeew.., all of that above look very promising and certainly will make you love your iPhone & iPod Touch much more than ever. Take a look at NetBlender's BD Touch YouTube video here to see how it works. Things are just keep getting better for Apple, as many software & hardware developers are adding more fuel to iPhone hot popularity.

Another day at the swap meet with my treo

So once again I started the swap meet cruisade and were here in the parking lot surrounded by what looks to me like junk. Astoundingly people are still roaming the aisles looking for the best deal on the block. While they roam I concentrate on the treo 750. Today I used my treo to wake me up. Usually im up at 9 but today it was 6 thanks to the treo. Then I headed out to the swap. While here I check my email and see that my bank sent me an email that my check went through. Nice! Then I use my treo to start working on an article to post later and save it for later. Once I save that I check my calender and see that I have a poker tornament to be at around 2. This gives me enough time to shave and shower when I get home. I brought the laptop just in case I feel like doing some editing on my website. If I could edit on my treo I would be traveling 2 pounds lighter. So that's how I have been using my treo for the day. Ill keep the addicts updated as I get through the day.

iPhone is killing the Net (part. 2)

...continued from the previous post.

Zittrain have express his concern on how the web based services from the internet have grow more everyday, for one example he mentioned about a web service from Google called Google Maps. As we all are accustomed to use it everyday, we actually can't do anything if Google decided to stop the web service. And this is the same for other web services that we use daily; email. We've been using our devices from PC to iPhone or other mobile phones, and these devices have become merely a dumb terminal, where the actual data & application are located in the server of the web service providers.

Those are just a small portion of the many web services example we can find in the internet. But Zittrain also said good things come from the growing number of web services, most of them are the product from thinkerers who have created most of the Net's innovations. For instance are web-based email, hosting services, instant messaging, social networking and search engines; these all are mostly created by talented individuals rather from leading IT manufacturers. Also with help from Net & those Web 2.0 applications, people around the world took the advantage of internet to set the course of the contents from what previously controlled by the publishing and recod companies. Even internet users have already set many courses of countries political affair, such as one of the latest commotion in Tibet rally of freedom where its informations are fueled by bloggers & internet news.

To sum it all up, Marsan (Network World) has put a nice closing: "it's a call to arms to these folks not to succumb to the ease of iPhones, Blackberries and Google Apps." Read on her full article here, she has covered many interesting short findings about Zittrain phyloshopy in his new book.

    iPhone gets embedded YouTube support

There's a good news coming from iPhone Atlas here, they said the iPhone firmware 2.0 will include a plug-in in the mobile Safari that can recognize YouTube content embedded in web pages. Another reason why you should wait till June if you wish to get your hands on iPhone, but for you who already have one and have jail-broken your precious iPhone hopefully the pawn tools from iPhone Dev Team can help.

One of the programs that I always get a lot of written correspondence about is perhaps the very first Palm OS program that I downloaded to my Palm 3x and thats DateBk6

One of the programs that I always get a lot of written correspondence about is perhaps the very first Palm OS program that I downloaded to my Palm 3x and thats DateBk6 which at present stands at version 6.0a, s5 and I am always amazed at the number of people who read about it on the site, try it and write in to thank us. I think it's one of the best Palm programs available, it's certainly is one of the oldest. "DateBk6 for Palm OS® is the most advanced calendar application available for the platform and brings a wealth of functionality not even present in most desktop calendar programs. DateBk6 uses the same databases as the built-in applications and is therefore guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your existing desktop and conduit software and runs on all versions of the Palm OS from 3.5 to 5.9+. DateBk6 is a $12.95 upgrade for those users who had previously purchased DateBk3/4/5 from Pimlico Software. Those users who had purchased DateBk4/5 on or after 1-Jan-2005 and prior to 15-Sep-2006 and who can use the automated upgrade system may be able to upgrade for free

When was the last time that you missed buying a birthday present because there was no ADVANCE warning of an event? Or missed a task because your tasks were not integrated with your calendar? Or spent more than two taps inserting a commonly used event for which DateBk6 has a built-in template? Or needed to look at a week-at-a-glance with the TEXT listed of your appointments? Or wanted to use color on your Palm handheld to emphasize important events? Or wanted to keep your spouse's or co-worker's calendar on your palm - but visibly separate from your own? Or have DateBk6 time-zone aware so that alarms and events are properly keyed to the correct timezone? Or wanted to recover an event that you accidentally just deleted? Or link an event or ToDo to an addressbook entry and automatically log to it? Or put an alarm on a ToDo? Or handle events that span midnight? Or.....? DateBk6 handles all of these tasks and more. No wonder it is one of the most popular Palm programs ever written! A light version of DateBk3 (DateBK4/5's predecessor licensed to Handspring) now appears in every Handspring handheld and the PalmOne Treo 600 smartphone under the name DateBook+ or Calendar.

    What's new in this version:
    Major Features:
Today Screen with multiple display options including ability to create and edit new appointments and ToDO's and check them off without leaving that screen. Also optionally displays status of VersaMail, phases of the moon, next upcoming alarm and has options to create an alternate or two-color gradient background.
Tap on Appt./ToDo to bring up Details, Tap&Hold to go to Day View with item selected. Tap&Hold on date line to go to that day in the day view. Tap on VersaMail line to launch VersaMail.
Handles location and birthday fields on newer PalmOne devices
Alarm Manager dialog replaces Next Alarm function - now shows up to 50 future alarms with ability to go directly to that event, also suppress alarm sound until a specific time and displays Days/Hrs/Mins. to next alarm. Also implements a special tag in an event which silences all Datebk alarms while that event is in progress

    Minor Features:
Display Today's date letter in red at top of screen in Day View
Displays next event in current day (if any) with red time field
On most phones, Dial Phone # will automatically find phone # in description, location or note and dial it.
Can now create new events in all views, not just the day view as before
Adds Include Hidden Categories checkbox to Find/Filter dialog so filtered split-screen display includes all occurrences including items in currently hidden categories"

    New release of Spacetime

[From Frederic La Queue en brie, France] Last year, I made a short review of SpaceTime from Spacetime Mathematics <http://spacetime.us/home.htm> a really really good software for the student, the mathematician or the engineer. At that time the Palm version was at its first release and there were main functions lacks or some entry issues. This morning I was notified of an update and I tested it. Now I must admit it is a really beautiful piece of software well tailored for the small screen and with many useful functions. The Palm version is not as powerful as the Pocket PC one but it is a tremendous tool. for example : You have multi lines equation. With the use of a scroll you can adjust a parameter in your equation and see your curve (2D or 3D) changing in real time. You can move your 3D curve to change your point of view. Every people interested in mathematics should try it. There is 30 days evaluation version with all the features available.

    An ugly Ferrari mobile phone

Noooo....! How can such a luxury brand car like Ferrari can make such ugly mobile phone? I don't know whether if this is a real deal or not, since Craze here doesn't mentioned any detail specs rather than the obvious 2.2 inch LCD touch screen seen in the picture. Or who really made the phone? Pininfarina should have design this one, then we'll get a very artistic mobile phone.

Update: Engadget Mobile got more details regarding this Ferrari mobile phone here. There will be 1.3M pixels camera, unknown memory card expansion slot & games. The phone is dual band GSM, priced around $190.

    Twinkle in Twitter for iPhone

Yeah, I don't quite get that either. There seems to be a new plug-in (kinda) for Twitter, according to Tech Digest here; Twinkle works like Locate Me service with geo-tags. Where basically Twitter users can get the position of other users by registering them through Twinkle, it is said Twinkle can't be accessed with Twitter so you'll have to go to Twinkle site itself...

Confused? Too many twinkle-twinkle words there? Me too, but if you're so interested in getting this Release Candidate (RC) 4 application for your iPhone; then read on Just Another iPhone Blog here. Source from Tech Digest via Gizmodo here.

Today my treo helped me work out l

So everytime I read one of sammys posts he talks about his work outs. This hs got me to thinking about why I stopped working out. Everytime he mentions hitting the gym and doing a couple of laps I have flash backs of what it was like. So after a year off I have decided to get back into the workout mode. I used my treo to open an excel web site and added my workouts weight and workout days. Then once done working out I simply add the info in after each workout. This is better than the old paper ways. After about two weeks my paper was shredded folded and torn from the gym. Also I used media player to send songs like "gat man" to my bluetooth headphones. This is great because I don't have to worry about pulling the plug when lifting or running. Wireless is the only way to go. So today I used my treo to keep my tunes going while tracking my workout progress.

    myBase Mobile (addendum)

Okay, I have just received an e-mail from Wjj Software customer service representative, and here is the quoted message: "Currently myBase Mobile Edition is still in its beta stage, you may use this version with no charges. Any questions please let us know. Thanks."

So that's it. It is a keeper, at least for now. Thank you Wjj Software!

iPhone Tricks that are actually helpful!

There is a video »  iPhone Tricks -  MacWorld   that shows some helpful Tricks for your iPhone and includes the following tips:

    • Clever uses for your iPhone camera
    • Saving reference material as web pages
    • Making “fake podcasts” of audio and video material
    • Using “fake contacts” to sync notes with your Mac
    • Using the iPhone’s backlight as a flashlight

    myBase Mobile

Okay, first of all, I am not sure whether this product is a freeware or not. I have already sent an e-mail to the company but has not received a reply yet. This page here seems to indicate that all the files in the download section are just 30-day free trial version, but then there does not seem to be a price mentioned in the store section for this software. To make it more confusing, some review mentioned that it is freeware. But I am getting ahead of myself here, let me back up a bit.

myBase Mobile, a lite version of myBase Desktop by Wjj Software, is an outliner (or some may prefer to call it a hierarchical note manager) for Windows Mobile.

I actually learned about myBase a few years ago, back when I did not have my O2 Xda IIi PDA Phone yet. At that time I tried the 30-day trial myBase Desktop and was impressed, but did not really continue to use the software since it is not free. My choice back then fell on the free version of TreePad instead. Now that I have switched to the more powerful operating system, Linux, I use NoteCase. But there is yet a Pocket PC version of NoteCase, so I decided to visit Wjj Software website once more to find out whether there is any Pocket PC version of myBase.

Well, it turned out there is. The software seems to be in beta form still, and was last developed in 2006, but I was impressed with the desktop version back then that I decided to give it a try. Well, it is a stripped-down of the desktop version, so but after trying it for a while I kind of like it. If this is free, it will definitely be a keeper for me. So now I am waiting for e-mail from the customer service.

P.S: I am open to any suggestion on Pocket PC Outliner if anybody knows. Much better if open source, of course  :-)

PhatNotes helping me to organize my work

Working in the mobile phone industry, there is a lot of information that sales personnel need to know, such as rate plans, promos, phone specs, how-to-do tutorials (especially as normobs [NORmal MOBile] users go to smartphones), and even better contact lists for non-personal use (tech support, for one).  I've tried just keeping this stuff in notes, but that's a chore to keep all the little notes organized.

I found PhatNotes for Windows Mobile, and I first thought that it was a clone of HanDBase or something like that, but it's a whole new direction for notes.

I keep all my notes for work in nice, nested directories to make it easier to get the ones I use the most at a glance, like specs for phones and promos.  I can also use the built in search to find an article by any word either in the title or text.  Very handy if you are in a hurry.

The client for Windows is compatible with ActiveSync on XP and Vista's mobile device center, and syncs just like any other conduit.

It's really nice that I can do a copy and paste from sites for notes about phones, then it will upload everything via ActiveSync in seconds.  I can then show my customers more detailed information about the phone that they want, and I can also show them a great piece of software as well.

On a personal note, I want to thank the Phatware staff and devels for making a great product that is actually helping me sell phones.

    An Addiction of the Times

[From Donali San Diego, California ] I'm a Johnny-come-lately in mobile computing devices. About 6 years ago I got my first mobile device, a Palm VIIx. I was completely captivated by having a device I could hold in my hand and actually *do* things with. I have just this month graduated to a Treo 755p, and I confess I am completely addicted. You would think I had never seen colors before - sometimes I just turn it on just to look at the colors. So non-Techno Geek! Having internet in my pocket, though, creates an insatiable desire to surf the web, check email, review my calendar, play a game... Last night in the middle of rehearsing a song in choir practice I googled a certain musical to see the composer, because parts of the melody I was singing was SO reminiscent of a duet I had once sung. Within 10 measures I had found what I was looking for, and had confirmation that the two composers were different and unrelated. All this without missing a beat. It's a terrible addiction, and I'm not even seeking help for it!

Treo 650 as a near perfect GPS navigator

[From Anton] Two months ago i finally became a proud owner of a gadget called "a car" :) As a beginner driver i felt that I use too much time thinking about how exactly get to a place i want, and that it would be great to have more time to focus on driving itself. So I ordered a GlobalTop GPS receiver from eBay and started to search for an ideal GPS software solution. In the end i realized there are only two solutions for Palm powered systems, with usable maps of Eastern Europe - TomTom 6 and Garmin. Because Garmin will only work with an proprietary GPS receiver, which i did not want to use, i did go with TomTom. To use Treo as a GPS device is great. I do not mind the screen size, it suits my needs perfectly. The only drawback is the age of TomTom maps. Seems like TomTom is focusing only on standalone navigation systems now and it is not clear, wheter they will release the 7 series for PDAs. So I am stuck woth maps dated july 2007 with 40% coverage of Slovakia... I am a little sad. My friends with Windows Mobile are able to use IGO gps software with full coverage and updated maps. Hope that TomTom will not abandon the PDA market.

    Treo 755p video use

[From pshannon17] Hi sammy my name is patrick and i'm from Revere ma. USA. Just want to let you know how much I really enjoy palmaddicts. One thing I use my treo for is streaming and downloading video. For streaming video I use kinoma player.one nice feature of kinoma is its media guide. Kinoma gives you a nice selection such as youtube and google video amongst other choices. For downloaded video I primarily use TCPMP. Two web sites I use are m.vtap.com and blueapple.mobi . Both sites supply video in the 3gp format and plays fine with TCPMP but Kinoma does not support the 3gp format. Both applications are excellent software but TCPMP supports more video formats and is freeware.

I'd be Sunk without my Shadow

[From Paul of San Jose, CA] I enjoy the website. The software I can't do without for my T3 is Shadow Plan. It allows me to outline the tasks or notes I keep on each client to follow projects that I'm responsible for. It's a great way to have a list of all the steps required in a project and to send each item to my "To do" list for the appropriate day.

Replacing my digitizer with a glass digitizer for my TX

[From Kerr Family] After replacing my digitizer with a glass digitizer for my TX (one of the best things I've ever done for my Palm!), I am now enjoying the use of "MyKeyboard" program that allows you to modify pre-existing or create new keyboards. It's fun to figure what is the best place to put the letters, punctuation, and numbers and also to decide what color they should be.

    I love my LifeDrive

[From Richard Williams] I love my LifeDrive, I’d be lost without it. I use my PDAs mostly for reading books ( I probably have close to 1500 on there) but I also use it for movies and for listening to audio books and podcasts (I love Podiobooks). I prefer the larger screen over something like a Treo. That’s why I don’t use a smartphone.

    WriteOff 1.0

WriteOff 1.0This seems a great program to help you with your tax problems. "No matter where you go, you can enter a writeoff using your PDA then print out a report on your PC. Records tax year, writeoff item, date, category, amount, percent of amount to be written off, total amount, and an optional note. Includes two free utilities. The first lets you convert the data you entered on your Palm to/from your PC. The second allows you to view/print a WriteOff report."
