Red Alert to iPhone & iPod Touch!

Iphone_hacked_03For iPhone & iPod Touch owners; there's a new threat to your shiny gadget. As described by iPhoneWorld (who even published this new threat source code!): "...your iPhone will lock up after simply visiting a page that contains the malicious code in question". So all the hackers need is for you to visit their website, and your Safari web browser's memory automatically will be overloaded; thus resulting in a freeze situation or the worst is crash down. This new exploit was tested on the newest iPhone firmware 1.1.4, and no words or patch from Apple yet. But for desktop users, you can fix it by installing the newest Safari v3.1.

Another solution is posted by Robert Vamosi (C|Net); just disable the Javascript within Safari:
1. Under Edit, click Preferences.
2. Click the Security icon.
3. Uncheck Enable JavaScript.
4. Close and restart Safari.
Good luck & God speed...

Happy Easter

Eeeggos5 Today as I was on an Easter Egg hunt with my daughter, I remembered that Palm had a little "Easter Egg" of it's own. So tonight I thought I would remind those of us with Palms that it's easy to find. just follow the directions below. These are for Palm OS 5.

Open up the preferences

Click on Power

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen (above the dia area) draw a tiny clockwise circle. You might have to do it a couple of times to get it. When you are successfil a tiny Easter Egg will pop up in the corner. Enjoy

My iPhone on Saturday

PaulsbadgeUsed the alarm to wake up and then checked the weather and my email with Safari.  Had to go into New York so I used Safari to check the traffic and decided to drive to Port Imperial and take the ferry over.  Beautiful ride, by the way, and if you are a tourist you should take the round trip just for the fun of it.

Used Google Maps to find the Heartland Brewery on 17th Street where I was having my meeting.  Listened to some jazz while I walked back to the ferry, and then plugged the iPhone into my car stereo to listen to a couple of podcasts on the way home.  Made a few phone calls and used Safari to check the time of the opera we are going to see on Tuesday.  Synced the iPhone to remove old episodes of Startrek Enterprise and downloded 6 more of them to the phone.  That's it for Saturday.

Camera Adventure

[From Ronald Abadi Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia] The camera on my O2 Xda IIi PDA Phone is, to put it midly, nothing to be proud out. To put it bluntly, it is downright ugly. The result is often blurry, too dark, or just simply not clear. Yet at most times, there is no other choice than to use it. Carrying my Kodak camera around is not too convenient and not really an option for mobility. So, when there is no other choice and I need to take a picture, my PDA will have to do. One way to make the result a little bit better is to ensure enough light in the room, or at least enough light around the object that I want to take a picture of. Even then it usually takes several shots before I get one that is rather acceptable.

Well, the other day while I was travelling by air, I saw an advertisement for a portable speaker on the flight magazine. As usual I did not have a pen and paper with me to write down the detail, and simply remembering it was not really an option because I do not have good memory. I might as well forget about it the next day. I could, of course, simply use my PDA to note the detail, but then I could not capture the look and appearance of that portable speaker. So, I had to use my PDA to take a picture of it. I turned on the overhead reading light on my seat, and I started to take a couple of pictures. None of them were very clear, but nevertheless I think they were better than nothing at all. Later on I showed the pictures to my cousin, for whom I actually took those pictures for, since I knew he would be interested to know of such portable speaker. Soon, we were on the net googling for it, and finding the website from which my cousin could order one. A few weeks passed and yesterday I got the news that his order had arrived, and he seemed to like it very much, thanks to my nothing-to-be-proud-of PDA camera!

PS: Happy Easter, everybody!

SharkLinks in the Water

[From Roger Moore, Culver City CA] If you aren't using SharkLinks, you are wasting a lot of time. SharkLinks is Tyler Faux's free application that will take any web address and coverts it to a stand alone app. How does it save you time? If I want to go to the Palm Addicts forum using Blazer, I have to open Blazer, wait for Sprint to connect me, and then go through my bookmarks to get to my destination. With Sharklinks, I just open my newly created application called PalmAddicts and it opens right up to the Palm Addicts forum. It cuts the wait time for Blazer by more than fifty percent. I keep an entire tab in zLauncher full of the websites that I frequently visit. If you keep them alphabetically, then you just need to pop over to that tab and enter the first letter of the website. It's great. Thanks Tyler!!!!!!

Sharklinks is available here.

Lumix in my palm

A few days back I mentioned how Xacti's video clips stored in its SD card can be played back in palm. But there's more on SD card reading.

Yesterday evening I received email from my aunty in France. Mom told her that the whole family was going to spend the weekend in Bintan with me, so she dropped me a note wishing us a happy Easter holiday and asked me not to forget to send some pictures.

Having took lots of pictures with my Lumix DMZ-FZ20, I inserted it's SD card to my TX, downscaled a few good ones with RescoViewer, attached them to Snappermail, and after writing a few lines that would made her want to come to this sunny little tropical island, sent it with bluetooth through my sonyericsson k750i. It was only a GPRS connection, but that was enough for a 1.2Mb attachment.

Later I set infinite slideshow mode on RescoViewer and pass on my palm to everybody so they could watch the pictures in all the glory of hires+ screen, rather than on the Lumix's tiny one.

Today my aunty replied, telling me how surprised and pleased she was to receive the pictures in such a short time, and couldn't wait to receive more. So I better stop now and start writing to aunty Benedict again on our second lovey day over here!

A Sneak Peak at a Pocket PC Device

Well, after all those years using Palm devices, I finally got my hands on a Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device. No, I haven't left the Palm fold. My wife just got an HTC S621 as a corporate phone and I'll have some fun exploring the operating system when I can sneak the phone away from my wife. Let me tell you, the HTC  feels solid and well made. The HTC is about the same dimensions as my Treo 680, but thinner than my T|X. It has an ARM 201 MHz processor running Windows Mobile 5, with GPRS and Edge technology. It makes me wonder why can't Palm make a device as thin and solid feeling?

Well, I need to set up my wife's Exchange Server access and then maybe drop another post about how I am using mobile technology.

Rumor, rumor and still rumors…

I hate it when the weekend holiday comes to an end so fast, but so less news to read. It has been so lonesome without exciting news, and as much as I too hate rumors on new gadgets that maybe never see the daylight; I guess it won’t hurt to have some for once in awhile “again”… Here are the few worthy of them; one or two may have been mentioned already at our beloved PalmAddict weblog, so bear a little okay:

* LG Vu, with a large touch screen and 3G connection, AT&T is hoping to bring a tv handset for you who wish to watch March Madness while on the go. Well, probably the playoffs is going to end first before the LG Vu got released. Besides the sleek glossy look, there’s hope it’ll also get the Prada look alike user interface. Read on PhoneArena for full specs details.

* Samsung Glyde U940, from the pictures provided by Engadget Mobile this one is going to be the contender in Sony Xperia X1 class segment. According to PhoneArena here, the Glyde U940 will land on Verizon soil for US$50 rebate (not the price) from 2/19/08 to 3/29/08. But strangely enough, there are no details of it yet.

* HTC Dream, yeah we can only keep on dreaming for an actual Google’s Android handset set to be release this year from HTC. No solid picture, who’s the wireless carrier, etc. Only vague specs like it’ll has QWERTY keyboard and measured around 3 inch wide – 5 inch long, tease yourself more at Engadget Mobile here.

* Nokia 5610, is a little better from its brethren 5300. The new oriented music player mobile phone will run on 3G network, and almost sure to be release by T-Mobile judged from the FCC pictures at PhoneArena; read on to know the detail specs.

Wheeew, there is no end for rumors. But they all are looking good to become real than just a concept or just a wild patent design at FCC. By the way, what kind of face did you make when you read on each one of the news above? ;-D

Online Language Translators

Today I was working on my Norwegian/Swedish project and I was think it would be great to have online sites for language translation bookmarked so I can grab them quickly. Palm translation applications tend to be very heavy and I don't have that much space. I do have Genius from Hobbyist, which translates but by default it goes to one site. But with the Phonefavs.com add bookmark feature, I added all these sites: Google's translator, Yahoo translator, Altavista translator, Microsoft Live translator and a new one I found from www.ultralingua.com (which also has a Palm app). But sadly I did not find a online English to Norwegian or Swedish site. Got to keep looking.

How A Six Year Old Uses Her Tungsten T

Tegan got a Tungsten T last year for her sixth birthday. She wanted a Palm like daddy's to play music, watch video and have a bright screen. It had to be an OS 5 device for all that. So I started having a look on Ebay at what was available. I came across a Tungsten T. It was at a very low price and I enventually won it for £20. When it came it was in really good condition and ideal for her. It had a differing form factor from the other Palms in the house so this was very individual for a rather individual six year old. I rather cheekily set it up as a clone of my Zire 71 and this allowed hed to play her favourite games she had played on my 71. I put on TCPMP to handle her video and music needs. This means I have ro make sure that they are mp3 files for audio but I knew that the output from Fair Use Wizard would allow the convertion of DVDs. I stuck in a 1 gig sd card to have ample storage. Now Tegan has played about with my 71 for quite a while and before that my Visor Deluxe so she figured out the Tungsten T no bother, I even realise that the center button worked on my 71 after a few years of use. Tegan uses her T everyday. At bed time some relaxing music is played and during the day a mix of games or video. There are things that I do like use the bluetooth to add to the store of photos she has onboard. I set up Launcher X to hide any system type apps from her and only show the ones she uses or is allowed to use. Yes my daughter, Tegan, 6, is also a Palm Addict. Saturday thoughts

Morning everyone and as promised I am in New York and as I mentioned earlier this week all I took in regards to computing was my iPhone and Palm Centro and so as a consequence all my blogging on Palm Addict will be done from either one of the devices.

In the meantime I hpe that you are all having a great Easter and remember that the Easter contest is on all this weekend ending on Tuesday, deets are in this sticky post so let us know how your using your mobile device. I'd also love to hear, if you celebrate it how your mobile device is helping with your Easter preparations so let us know.

Well it is bitterly cold here in NYC and I am blogging this at 6:30am, it's either been a late night or a early start but when you have jetlag all purpose of time is thrown out of the window. Needless to say that I used my iPhone to listen to my tunes on the 7 hour flight across the Atlantic yesterday and the battery was fine and then when I got to the US I checked my email from my Centro using the excellent Chatteremail which is my favourite email program for Palm OS. I've swapped the SIM card and inserted into my iPhone for the time being to see how I get on with using my iPhone for today and I am typing this editorial from it without any problems and I will continue to blog throughout the day and let you know how I am getting on with my mobile devices. In the meantime have a great Saturday and try not to eat too many Chocolate Eggs, just think of the calories. Keep your mobile user thoughts coming in, they are great to read.
