Why I Love My Palm T|X

The Palm T|X is the epitome of the standalone PDA.  It has plenty of RAM for your apps and data (128MB), SD Card storage for additional storage (pictures, video clips, music files, etc.), bluetooth and WiFi for connectivity, a large screen (320x480) to display everything you want, and the Palm OS, a capable operating system with lots of extensibility and a well published API for third party developers.  Easy to use, easy to carry, long life battery, it's an all-around great platform.  I use mine every day to check e-mail, browse the web or my RSS feeds, play games, read e-books, study my scriptures, keep track of my appointments, remember facts and keep notes, store phone numbers and addresses, keep track of my blood pressure, monitor my vehicle's fuel usage, tell time, log geocaches, check on airline flights, check the weather, find directions, keep track of expenses, make calculations, look up words (dictionary and thesaurus), note the phase of the moon, find a local repeater (amateur radio), etc. etc. etc.  All this on a tiny device I can carry in my pocket.  It's simply amazing.

A Cell Phone turned into a weapon

[From Daniel] Thanks to Daniel who spotted this story which is UK related via SKY News, a phone disguised as a weapon. "A potentially lethal stun gun disguised as a mobile phone has been recovered from a city's streets. Device disguised to look like this Sony Ericsson W700. The illegal weapon, similar in appearance to a Sony Ericsson W700, can deliver a 900,000-volt electric shock when its small metal prongs are placed on a target. The shock is enough to cause serious injury, said Nottinghamshire Police, and could even prove fatal for a small child or elderly victim." SKY News after the jump.

What I Won't Miss

PaulsbadgeWe have just recovered from 3 days without power after the huge windstorms that rocked New Jersey over the weekend.  This meant no computer and I kept my iPhone use to a minimum as I had no easy way to recharge it. (Also meant no heat, lights, water, bathrooms - not a pleasant time).

When the power came back I booted up and went to Bloglines and found, of course, a huge amount of RSS feeds to go through. I have 130 feeds in Bloglines and that's a lot to check if I've been off the net for a while.  I had the same problem when I came back from California after a 5 day vacation.

I found that in both instances I only ended up checking a few favorite feeds and then marked all the others as read.  Without any prompting from a list I found that I checked the same feeds both times, so I thought I would share them with you as they are obviously my favorites.  I hope you find some of them of interest:

Today I am using my Treo to keep up with the election news

[From Gabriel North Carolina, USA ] Today I am using my Treo to keep up with the election news via google news and google reader. Google's web services are well designed for mobile and desktop alike! I look forward to the time when Palm OS 2 is out and we can have a proper web 2.0 compliant mobile browser!

Not everybody want 3G mobile phone

Texas Instrument (TI) has just announced the reduction of its revenue forecast for the first quarter from its original guidance, which basically caused by the lack of demand for higher-end mobile phones chips; specially 3G chips. Ron Slaymaker, TI vice president expressed his concern of wireless mobile phones market, because this news could mean people in general don't need 3G mobile phones. Another concern perhaps that the 3G technology will stay for quite sometimes now before replaced with the newer one: 4G, although the 4G technology is already being tested in several countries like Japan; vendors like TI will stall the release based on low market demands. This is indeed a sad news for technology & gadgets geek, like me. Let's us hope this news doesn't effect on the iPhone 3G, that's rumoured set to be release this year. PC World has the whole complete story right here.

Mobile blogging for curing my insomnia

I can't sleep! And it's already 3:02 AM in the morning here, even though I had a busy day yesterday from fixing a broken workstation computer to the installment of our new store; I'm just not tired enough to sleep. I know I have to over-exhausts myself. So I fired up the RSS agregators app in my Treo and read some interesting news, an urge to write blogs came suddenly and next thing I realized my eyes are getting heavy. I managed to share some infos for PA readers here, but I had to sent the other one as email to Sammy ;-)

So that's how moblogging (mobile blogging) act as a cure for my insomnia today, hope it'll work on you too...

Unified & integrated communication

Corporate business users must've feels very excited when Steve Jobs announced the availability of Microsoft Exchange Server support in iPhone v2.0 firmware update, this will open up a new path of unification between Apple & Microsoft. The flashy iPhone can bring more cheer & colours into business mobile phones market, iPhone is definetely going to set another standard in meaning of convergence device (work & play); like it did with the user interface for mobile phone.

But maybe you also remembered that IBM was the first to announced to bring it's Lotus system into iPhone, when the SDK kit released. So far, there hasn't been much to hear from the "blue company" (IBM) anymore about that. But there's another announcement from IBM, covered by PC World article here, that they're ramping up to $1 Billion investment in products such as Lotus Sametime to provide unified communications to the large business customers. Which means IBM is aiming for large corporates who have 1,000 or more employees, said Steve Mills - the senior vice president of IBM's software group. IBM intends to secure their position in high-end business market from Microsoft attacks, the Office Communication Server is boasted by Microsoft as the most used messaging system in corporate environments. Both sides have pledged to integrate their new platform into existing system, this could boost the eficiency for whole business communications (who addopted each system, but not both).

The fight of these two giants software are giving more advantages for end users like us, it's going to be very interesting to see how the iPhone SDK kit provide us with vast availabilty of 3rd party softwares. Business messaging integration into mobile smartphones looks very promising in the future! But how about you Palm??

San Francisco Buses Get Wi-Fi

[From Freda in San Francisco] Our San Francisco Muni buses (one of our main modes of public transportation in the city) have gotten wired! Test hybrid electric buses are rolling out that have free wi-fi access, touchscreen maps, and connecting transit information. Take a look at the article... While I don't ride Muni, thousands of others brave daily rides on Muni to get to work, school, and home. I don't know if given a preference, Muni riders would prefer timely, reliable service or Wi-fi...but at least it's there.

"The bus of the future has arrived in San Francisco, and while it doesn't drive itself, fly over crowded intersections or necessarily even arrive on time, it does offer free Wi-Fi access, touch-screen maps on the walls and connecting transit information. "This is definitely not your grandmother's bus in terms of technology and capability," said Nathaniel Ford, Muni's chief executive officer. A cooperative effort between Muni and Cisco Systems, it's known as "the Connected Bus," and officials hope it will live up to its name by helping riders connect to other buses as well as to the Internet."

Pocket Player works through Bluetooth headset

[From James Moat Minneapolis, MN] I needed to take my wife’s minivan to work today, and so my pocket pc didn’t have access to my car’s stereo. No matter, I used the BT headset option in Pocket Player (www.conduits.com) to channel a podcast to my headset while I drove. It’s a great feature!

Sudoku on my TX

[From John Deweerd Toronto, Canada] I downloaded Andrew Gregory's Sudoku game the other day and it's been keeping more than a little frustrated, thank you very much. Even if Palm's flower is fading it's great when I can still discover new petals, I mean programs, and drag out the enjoyment of my TX for as long as possible before perhaps being forced to switch to something else!

I'm a Treo 700p guy

[From Shawn Valle] I’m a Treo 650 now using a 700p guy on Verizon. Using it every day with ChatterEmail (all day/all night). Do all my corporate emailing with it. Also use Pocket Tunes with Softick Audio Gateway (and Moto HT820’s) exclusively. No iPod for me. Of course, everything that GX5 has put out, I have on my Treo. Stream CNN video with Kinoma all the time. I live, eat, and breath this stuff.

LifeDrive still rocks!

[From Jakub Zajac] Thou I've recently got a Treo 650, my LifeDrive is still an essential part of my everyday life. As I study medicine, I use LifeDrive to record the lectures. And because there is 4GB space I can record using the highest sound quality!

The first person who emails me can take the HTC TyTN II off my hands

I haven't chosen a winner from yesterday's throwaway yet due to time commitments but will get around to checking who the first person was to email yesterday later tonight. In the meantime here is the second of the promised weekend throwaway devices and it's a HTC TyTN II which to be fair is a great device but just not my cup of tea and was a review device which to be fair is just going to gather dust hence why the first person who emails me with a few lines on how they are using their mobile device gets the HTC TyTN II smartphone. Please put TUESDAY in your subject line and as always email - sammymcloughlin@gmail.com

Palm still has it

[From Mike Llorenna] Palm had it right for a while and I think they still do. The operating system may be years old but at least it works but I tend to agree it is very stale. Palm can survive the wave of next generation of mobile computing providing they listen to what it's user say, it's consumer base is very important, both PalmAddicts and PalmInfoCenter probably represent the Palm community and they should be monitoring what users are saying. If they take on board the concerns, complaints and praise and act upon the response then I think Palm will be able to deliver a great product. Sammy keep up the great work.

If you have a Windows Mobile Treo then you must check out TreoCentral's review of Virtual Pool Mobile

If you have a Windows Mobile Treo then you must check out TreoCentral's review of Virtual Pool Mobile. "In Virtual Mobile Pool, the player is presented with what I consider to be the ultimate pool simulation for any mobile device. From the jaw-dropping graphics to the upbeat music that plays in each of the various pool halls you visit, Celeris put quite the effort into bringing to my Treo 750 a pool simulation that literally draws you into the game! The goal of the game, according to Celeris, is to play in the Garage, honing your skills with advice from Curly, the ultimate road player. Step into Virtual Pool Mobile with me as I describe the game, the equipment, the players and the gaming experience!"

Murray from PalmMac blog has written an interesting editorial entitled On to June now...Carry on Centroing

Murray from PalmMac blog has written an interesting editorial entitled On to June now...Carry on Centroing. "Yep, I really like the Centro but being realistic, if I had ListPro and Resco Neeews or Spb Insight, eReader and one or two other basic apps on the iPhone then I'd be using that full time as the interface, speed, ease of use, screen and one or two other things make the iPhone a fantastic device and one that I would prefer to use on a daily basis, even over the great Centro. That's not me being snobby or knocking the palm o/s because I love it to death it's more that the iPhone UI is just so smooth and pleasurable to use that I want to have all my important apps on it...and on it now. The fact that it syncs so easily and reliably with my home computer of choice is a further big bonus." Read in full.

KeepOn

[From Eric Mann] Eric sends word about a program called KeepOn which basically allows you to override the system default of keeping your Palm device but obviously this is going to drain your battery so please be careful. "If you enable KeepOn, the SysSetAutoOffTime is set to zero seconds. The device will not go to slepp again until you press the power off key. On the sysSleepPowerButton the device will switch off. Attention! May be the battery of your device gets drained und you may loose your data." Again I think this one is free but we always encourage you to make donations wherever possible. Make the jump.

NotifyThem v0.03 beta could potentially be useful I am sure, it's free but also in beta so be aware. Schedule reminders to be sent to people as SMS messages. Available here.

Alternative Treo 600 Useage

[From David Ross (Fife Scotland)] Yesterday Debs went out the house to see to something and went with 600 inhand. A while ago we saw a programme about self defence in a mugging situation. It involved hitting someone on the bridge of the nose with a mobile. Now Treos are quite chunky as mobiles go and Debs realises this so she likes the 600 to hand. She also prefers the form of the 600 to the 680 as the aerial would go nicely in an eye. Not that I or anyone on Palm Addicts would condone violence but as self defence goes I think a Treo would be pretty effective. I will have to check Ebay for a spare just incase but knowing the 600 I'm sure it would survive.

While many details have been leaked about the "Standard" version of this update, information is only now coming out about the Professional edition." Read in full.

CNET Crave, Palm Centro: Hands-on with the mini Treo 500

[From Eric Mann] Thanks to Eric for the heads up, C/NET crave writes up it's thoughts having spent some time with the European Centro. "Last week Palm launched the Palm Centro in the UK and you'll have to forgive us for mistaking it for the Treo 500 when we first saw it online. But today it dropped on to our Crave-branded doormat and we realised just how much smaller this little piggy is. Size, we're assured, isn't everything and while our first impressions involved the phrase "aww, isn't it ickle", we quickly realised that making a tiddly Treo 500 doesn't immediately equal a consumer-friendly product." Sammy's Centro Diary

I was playing Astraware's Westward last night on the Centro, most enjoyable. I was supposed to find time when I was on vacation last week but didn't get the time so finally got to sit down and play a game last night when I had a few minutes to spare and it is actually very good. It takes a little time to get into the game but it lays well and it is pretty much addictive too and with that in much it is recommended. You can get the trial from the Astraware website.

Secondly, sticking with Astraware I also found some time to play another of my favourite games, Bejeweled 2. I have to say that I was probably the last person to get into the whole Bejeweled craze but now I love it. I have to say that when I got my Phone I looked for a Bejeweled clone that I could play on my jailbroken device and there is a good version, iZoo and although it is very good it doesn't come close to the excellent features that Astraware's Bejeweled offers. It's one of those games that look great on my Centro so my advice for today is if you get some free spare time and you have never bitten the Bejeweled bug then just take 5 minutes to download the trial and give the game a go, I think you will like it. But if you get no work done, please, do not blame me :-) Again, Bejeweled 2 is available from the Astraware website where you can get a trial of the game.

Paul at the Official Palm Blog talks about instant messaging.

[From Eric Mann] Paul at the Official Palm Blog talks about instant messaging. "Instant Messaging on mobile devices isn't as popular as text messaging, but I find myself doing more and more IMing on my Centro smartphone. According to a joint study by AOL-AP on IM usage patterns, the number of people using IM is increasing, but it's still relatively small compared to text messaging. As I'm sure many of you would agree, to me, web-based mobile IM services don't come close to the IM experience you get on your desktop computer. I think one of the issues for mobile usage being significantly lower than text messaging is awareness that there are mobile IM clients available that address some of the key shortcomings of browser-based mobile IM (varies by client)." I have just discoverd a simple way for CRM on my blackberry

[From Vinit gupta, Mumbai, India] Dear Sammy, I have just discovered a simple way for CRM on my blackberry. I have created an excel sheet with all my sales data including client names, sales figues, average sale and the number of times they bought from us over the year. I carry this excel sheet with me on my blackberry all the time. All I have to do is sort data by the date last purchased, and I can see which clients I have not contacted in a long time. Then I use the blackberry to immediately either make a call or send the client a text message that they have not purchased from us for a long time. If they ask me to call at a later date, its immediately entered as a task. If they ask me to come over and give them a presentation, its entered in my calender. This way I have significantly boosted my sales. Thanks to my blackberry, my small business has seen significant increase in sales volumes.

New Centro for Momma

[From Rusty] Well, I did it. Went to the ATT site and plunked down the ol’ credit card on a brand new Palm Centro for my wife. Her Razr is perfectly functional, but I promised her a new phone for Valentines day. So I did it. Now to get through the “this isn’t how I’m used to doing it” phase. I love my wife, but she is the most technophobic person I know. It took 3 months to train her on how to get the most out of her Razr Vxx. We don’t use it to access the web, (too expensive with ATT), but we do have unlimited text and SMS. This is a must with 6 grandkids, all doing different things.

Now I’m shopping for a skin (tinkerbell) and a clear case to show it off and a memory card and travel charger and screen protector……….the list is ongoing. So far, Amazon has all of these except the skin. Oh, and the MotoPure H12 bluetooth earpiece. So I’ve spent two hundred bucks (after the ATT Rebate) and have about 50 bucks to go.

I’ve still got my Tx, and now I download ringtones and Bluetooth them over to her. But although they show up and play in PTunes, they don’t show up in the ATT Phone application as available ringtones, nor in MiniTones. Still looking for a solution there, but if anyone has a suggestion I’d love to hear it.

I haven’t installed any programs except Astraware’s Sudoku, Solitaire and Bejeweled. The rest is still Stock, Basic and un-used. We are working on the phone application, trying to get ringtones assigned to people, and I accidently duplicated the address book from the SIM card, but hey, we are moving right along getting her addicted to her palm. I doubt she’ll ever post here, or even read this, but I do enough for both of us.

Thanks Sammy, for a great site! Keep it up!

Weather

Today I woke up what looks a rain which isn't normal around here because it has been a dry year. So like always I turn off my alarm on my Palm and fireup Gizmo and checked my mail with Chattermail. Checked the weather with Kmeteo and no surprise very bad weather.

Treo messaging beats MSN!

[From Jakub Zajac] I’ve just changed mobile phone from a Motorola L6 to Treo 650. It’s one of the best things I’ve done! I’ve used Lifedrive and the Motorola for a long time, but to have both a PDA and mobile phone in the same package is so convenient. Beside using the Treo 650 as a mobile phone, I sync it with Outlook and listen to music. But the most heavily used app is Messaging. Since I’ve got a mobile carrier that lets me send SMS messages for free to mobile phones that have the same carrier, I can chat with friends for free. And because Treo 650 has a Qwerty keyboard, it’s better than chatting on MSN with a computer!

Good Ole Solitaire

[From Linda, Oak Hill, WV] When I get bored from reading ebooks or playing Sudoku or reviewing my tasks that I have not yet completed, I will play a game of Solitaire. It came with my Palm M500. It’s a quick diversion from my normal activities. I am going to look for a crossword puzzle game to put on my Palm next.

My Palm as a clock

Due to the change to the Daylight Savings Time law, the clocks on our computers here at work aren’t correct this morning, and we can’t change them without sysadmin privileges. So, I put my T|E in the cradle, turn of the auto-off while charging, and hit World Clock. Viola, desktop clock!

BBC iPlayer comes to the iPhone

If your in the UK then you may be interested to know that the BBC has launched a version of its iPlayer video on demand service for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. "It is the first time the service has been available on portable devices. The iPhone and iPod touch are able to stream shows from the iPlayer website over wi-fi networks. The iPhone cannot stream BBC video over the cell network. A BBC developer said that the corporation was currently working on other versions of the iPlayer for "many more" devices." The BBC has the deets on this one.

Don't you dare touch my iPhone!

[From Aroldo, Union City, California] How did I ever live life without my beautiful iPhone? I first learned about the iPhone while I was surfing the web, and I was amazed. I was eager to get one, but the only thing stopping me was that hefty price tag (I wasn't about to pay $600 for a phone, no matter how awesome it looked). So, I told myself to be patient and wait for the prices to go down. AS IF! I immediately drove off and came back with an iPhone (and an empty wallet).

I'm extremely satisfied with my iPhone. I love the fact that I could surf the web without having to boot up my ancient computer. After a tiring day of work, I could sit down and listen to my music or watch videos, all in one device. I'll never be late to important meeting again thanks to the built in planner. It's easy to capture quick memories with the 2 megapixel camera (and it's also fun zooming in and out of pictures). Whenever I'm in a business trip in San Francisco or New York, I don't have to worry about getting lost because my handy dandy iPhone has a built in Maps app. (how awesome is that!). I could also check my Yahoo, AOL, and Gmail mailboxes quickly and easily (no more hassle!) I don't have to carry around an iPod, my organizer, my camera, and my crappy bar phone now that I have this super device.

So you could take away my TV, take away my stereo, but don't you DARE touch my iPhone!
