Keeping the housekeeping matters

[From Ronald Abadi Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia] Occasionally, I need to jot down some housekeeping matters such as expense records, to-do list, thoughts, etc. It is certainly nice to have these information on my PDA Phone since I do not leave home without it. Whenever and wherever I need to remember something or have any thoughts, I just put them on my PDA. I do not use any particular software, just Pocket Word included in Windows Mobile 2003SE.

No multi-tasking for iPhone!

There's a very good editorial at Gizmodo; it's about how Apple actually allow only one application run at a time on the iPhone. Yes, you read that right. It seems the iPhone engineers believe that making iPhone to do multi-tasking & run various apps on the background can make it unstable, most notable is those apps could slow down iPhone performance in general. These scenarios often occured on Windows Mobile devices, just like what happened with Treo of mine. Read on the whole story here.

Bejeweled for mariage proposal?

Caught this funny story at Engadget, about how a man modified the famous Astraware game: Bejeweled and made it to show an engagement ring when his girlfriend finished a certain score while playing with it. I know it's an electronic & crazy world out there now, but I guess some people just don't feels the traditional bended on one knee mariage proposal is no longer needed...

Howard web forum in danger

A quite shocking news came from jkOnTheRun, there has been a tragedy befall on Howard web forum; one of the most resourceful mobile phone forums out there. mobiTV is currently asking the web host of Howard web forum to shut it down, because one of the post by it's member reveals a way to download mobiTV paid contents freely. Howard Chui, the web forum founder, have declined to erase that particular post because it's impossible for him to watch every posts made by the web forum members. A really interesting argument also mentioned in the article as well, read on here to find out more.

My faithful Tungsten C

[From Tony] My Tungsten C is getting on a bit now. It's actually a family heirloom, I inherited it from my father-in-law when he died. I use it from the start of the day to the end. It sits on the bedside table running as an alarm clock. First job of the day: check e-mail before I even get up. I catch up on last-nights 'Lost' episode on the bus to the office. I synch with my Outlook calendar at the office so i always have my full itinerary on the move. I use it as a notebook all day. I suppose it's a pretty ancient device now but I won't switch as it's hard to get all the features which the Tungsten C had in one device now. Not sure if it'll still be working when it's time to pass it on to my son.

Treo 650 makes a fine torch

[From James Soper ] Today I had to get up *really* early to travel to a job. I used the World Clock application as a very reliable alarm clock and because I didn't want to wake my partner by putting on the light it used the light from the screen as a torch. It shines more than enough light to navigate around a darkened room and avoid the usual books, half drunk cups of coffee and random shoes etc that litter my side of the bed.

Every time I convince myself that I just have to go and buy an iPod touch to replace my aging 650 I keep finding new things it can do.

One mobile device per child part 2

[From Ronald Abadi Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia] Just a few days after I sent an e-mail titled "ONE MOBILE DEVICE PER CHILD" to Sammual, I stumbled into an article on a certain Linux news website (focusing on mobile devices), and read an article on some $5 iPod-look-alike project. While this is more of an MP3 audio player, the intention of this project is to follow on Nicholas Negroponte's footsteps. According to the founder of the project, "We're trying to bring access to knowledge to the poorest people, but these people often don't have electricity or an Internet connection." Well, I really approve mission like this. So, if a $5 audio player is possible, chances are it will also be possible to build PDA or cellular phone for less than $100. I really hope someday more and more projects like this can follow.

In order to avoid any promotion though, I decided not to write the name of the organization, the founder of this project, or the name of the device itself, but really what is stopping you from googling for "$5 iPod"? *wink*

My name is Mr. Palm Z22 and I’ll be your new teacher

[From Petros, Athens, Greece] Hello, One interesting use I've found for my Palm Z22 is teaching my 5-year-old twins English (we're Greek) and math through Flash Card apps. There are some quite good freeware versions out there; the joy you see on their faces when they successfully find the word or result is indescribable. Through a combination of playing rules (first to answer correctly wins, state x number of words beginning with the displayed letter, state x number of objects that relate in any way with the displayed pic etc.) I've managed to sustain and boost their curiosity and eagerness to play yet another round. These days it's difficult to end the session and I need to fake a low-battery situation just to persuade them that it's time for bed. In a way, the little Palm Z22 has become a part of our playing/learning quality time and not just indoors; we play rounds in the backyard, playground, in the car while waiting for mommy get the groceries etc.

Tank Ace 1944 for Palm

Tank Ace 1944 for Palm from Pocketgear. "Do you like to drive tanks over rugged terrain, lob artillery shells into the far hills, and blow up lethal opponents lurking around every bend? If so, then Tank Ace 1944 is the game for you. In Tank Ace 1944 you command a World War II tank charging to occupy the enemy capitol. Allied and Soviet Tank Aces advance on Berlin; German Aces advance on London and Moscow. At least that's what the orders from HQ say. But since you face overwhelming odds and are forced to scavenge supplies as you go, you might just find yourself retreating instead. The goal of each round of play is to clear the enemy from a map sector and drive them off the far bank of a river so that your side can cross and advance. Skills you will need to accomplish this are a working trigger finger, the ability to navigate West or East (left and right on the overhead map), and driving ability sufficient to crash into other vehicles."
