iPhone SDK could be coming tomorrow?

[From James] The iPhone SDK could be coming tomorrow according to mactropolis.com. "Oh my God! Seriously! The iPhone SDK - it’s coming out tomorrow! No, right, seriously. I was on the train earlier and the bloke that checked my ticket, he told me that he had been speaking to someone in the buffet car who was trying to get a bacon roll (except that they had run out and so he had to have a cheeseburger but he didn’t want one of those, so he had a Twix instead), well, he was speaking to him when he got a call on his mobile and he overheard him speaking to a bloke who was obviously from Apple, and he said that he was speaking to someone else and they said that the SDK was going to be launched tomorrow. Seriously!" Read in full at mactropolis.com

Mark Tamura produces some excellent freeware programs and one of them is a basic but free spell checker, it does things slightly different but is a program I have carried on my Palm devices for some time, it's called Spell5. "Freeware. Spell5 is a clipboard editor and an American English spell checker with an extensive 172k word list (140k common words and 32k abbreviations/proper nouns). Smaller word lists of 78k and 14k (common words) and 17k and 300 (abbreviations/proper nouns) are also included. Unknown words can be added to a separate private word list. Alternative spellings are also provided when a misspelled word is found. Supports PalmOS 3.3 to 5.x. Best performance on PalmOS 5.x. Clipboard editor. Spell5 copies text data from the clipboard (when launched) and pastes it to the clipboard (when exiting). Both the system clipboard (1000 character size limit) and the CutPaste5 clipboard (32k character size limit) are supported. CutPaste5 requires PalmOS 5." Available for free and you can download via freewarepalm.

Back up your Palm device with OnGuard Backup

Backing up your Palm device is essential and since I have had the Centro I have ensured that I continue to back up my device just to be on the safe side and with that in mind check out OnGuard Backup from NorthGlide as they seem to offer a good solution, reasonably priced at $14.95. Mobile applications, RIP

[From Mike Rohde] Mike Rohde has just thrown the following reminder into us at PA. "An interesting article you might consider mentioning about the demise of mobile native software apps by Mike Mace. Mobile applications, RIP". Read in full. Although we have mentioned as have a couple of writers this past few days it's good to read the editorial in full.

For Palm OS users there is the excellent TMP

And for those of you with PalmOS devices like myself remember there is the excellent TMP, which kind of reminds me of my Psion days. "TMP (Time Manager Pad) is a list-style appointment viewer and manager with a unique new layout that scrolls smoothly. TMP is fast and highly configurable." It works fine on a Centro and offers the following features. "Event category support. Category-assignable fonts and colors. Hi-res icon support (categories). New color selector with enhanced functionality. Indication of busy days in monthly calendar tab. Re-designed pane controls for improved ease of use."

Spb Diary

If you have a Windows Mobile Treo or smartphone then I suggest that you take a look at Spb Diary it's been recommended to me a number of times recently. "Spb Diary is a feature-rich Today plug-in for your Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, Notes and Messages. It enhances Pocket Outlook by gathering all of your PIM information in one place. With Spb Diary, the Today screen will soon become your favorite since you will need to leave it less and less." Make the jump and if your interested there is a trial should you wish to try.

Borrowing Library E-Books Again!

[From Ken and Linda Pettit] I love to read to read ebooks on my Palm M500 and I love to borrow them from the Library. Our PC crashed in September and when I reloaded Adobe Reader and Digital Editions I could not get it to work. I followed the Adobe Digital Editions forum for months waiting for the new version of Digital Editions to come out. It finally came out a couple weeks ago and I thought it was my answer. I spent a whole day trying to get it to work! I finally did it by uninstalling Adobe Reader then I logged into my Windows Live ID account and stayed logged in while I downloaded Adobe Reader. (I tried doing this with my Adobe and my Microsoft Passport accounts then downloading Reader but they did not work). I am so happy to be able to read ebooks from the library again!

Treo 680 helping with my carrer's thesis

Hi, I'm about to get my economist degree but before that i need present my thesis wich is a very deep investigation about a subject concerning about my carrer and i have to tell you that i wouldn't know what to do without my Treo (before that my Tungsten e and LifeDrive).

Writing a Thesis is tough 'cause it involves a lot of time reading a writting and you are not always at home when a good ideas cross your head so for has been very important the posibility of writting everywhere i go no matter if I'm at school, at my girlfriend's house, visiting somefriends if i have an idea i can type it and it is so cool because writting right has a correlation with being inspired also the device is so small and fast so no need for my laptop wich by the way is so old and not so trusty (and heavy).

Also I have to read a lot of documents for my thesis, economic papers, econometric papers, researchs, docs, books and some websites so my treo has me cover why? let's see:

For viewing PDF I use Palm PDF of Docs to Go if it's mainly text but if it is a heavy pdf with strange characters like equations o just heavy graphs there is one option Repli Go... and amazing software wich the viewer is free but the converter is not i even think is out of development  for Palm Os but for blackberry is amazing (too bad) the PDF mobilizer cost arround $100 bucks wich is the current shown on their website i don't know if they don't sell anymore Repligo Desktop 2.0 for $29.99 wich is the one i use and works great I dare you to compare the speed of the same doc in Pdf and after convert it in repligo and see wichone is faster and keeps the format, i know that it needs a previos conversion but believe me that is fast... very fast almost as viewing a pdf on a pc, I have full books (800+ pages) and Repligo does not slows down and has all the features (converted from a large PDF).

I so pleased with my Treo 680 'cause it helps me a lot everyday appart from the common task like info management or viewing photos (and the phone of course) but  as a future profesionist it is a must have i'm so attach to it that i wouldn't know what to do with the portability of my treo... i have forgoten it once (at my girlfriends house) and all day felt like i missed something kind of incomplete like if you take a carpenter his hammer and nails... LOL :)
I hope your device is as useful to you a mine is for me
See You soon palmaddicts!!

Socket Mobile Releases Cisco Certified Enhanced Wi-Fi(R) Companion(TM) Software

[From Hans] Socket Communications, Inc., dba Socket Mobile, Inc., an innovative provider of mobile productivity solutions, today announced the immediate availability of Enhanced Wi-Fi Companion (e-WFC), a software platform that adds robust, enterprise-class wireless connectivity to any business mobility device such as the Socket Mobile SoMo 650 handheld computer. With CCX certification, e-WFC greatly increases Wireless LAN (WLAN) security, mobility and overall network management. The e-WFC software works in conjunction with the Socket Mobile Wi-Fi chipset that is used in the Socket Mobile SoMo 650 handheld computer, a Socket branded compact flash Wi-Fi card and is also offered as an OEM embedded module to other manufacturers of products requiring robust Wi-Fi connectivity. The e-WFC is available for purchase by Socket Mobile customers as an upgrade to their pre-existing Wi-Fi Companion software or as an orderable feature in their Socket Mobile handheld computer or CF card purchase.

The e-WFC software can be implemented on any Windows Mobile 5.0, Windows Mobile 6.0 and Windows CE 5.0 handheld devices using the Socket Mobile Compact Flash WLAN plug-in card. In addition, handheld OEM customers will be able to leverage CCX features by embedding Socket Mobile WLAN modules in their reference design and using e-WFC software.

CCX Value Proposition and e-WFC Key Competitive Advantages

With Cisco products in nearly two-thirds of enterprise wireless LAN, or Wi-Fi, infrastructures today, most business organizations demand that the Wi-Fi radios in their mobile devices bear the Cisco Compatible seal, which is earned through the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) program. The CCX specification defines the set of features needed for a Wi-Fi radio or a client device that uses Wi-Fi Radio, to be deemed "compatible" with a Cisco wireless LAN infrastructure. Although Cisco has published five versions of its CCX specifications, today a product can be certified only for the two most recent versions: Version 4 (V4) or V5. Socket Mobile has a unique advantage where both the Socket Go Wi-Fi! Module P700 and the client device Socket SoMo 650 handheld computer have achieved the Version 4 Certification.

Key features of e-WFC software are:

-- Incorporates award-winning wireless configuration program, known as Wi- Fi Companion
-- Supports Windows CE 5.0, Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6.0
-- Advanced security and reliability for WLAN traffic of business organizations
-- Complete solution from Socket Mobile without any third party supplicant. User will have assurance that solution will work right out of the box and Socket Mobile provides both integration professional services and post sales support
-- Designed to use minimum power, and Automatic Power Save enables you to further reduce the power usage and to maximize the battery life of your device
-- Support for WPA/WPA2 (Enterprise) and EAP methods (LEAP, EAP-FAST, and EAP-TLS) in a single program
-- Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM), a standard for quality of service (QoS) and Cisco roaming enhancements using Cisco Centralized Key Management (CCKM) protocol
-- VOIP over Wi-Fi: CCX features incorporate voice-specific enhancements, such as seamless routing of traffic among access points, especially as users "roam" or move through a network and their calls transition from one access point to another.
-- Enhanced client and network management through multiple SSIDs and VLAN support on an AP and AP-specified transmit power at client.
-- Wi-Fi Alliance Certified and CCX 4.0 certified

Socket Mobile will be formally launching this new product at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference and exhibition February 24-28 in Orlando with Cisco, and providing demonstrations at both the Socket Mobile booth #1312 and the Cisco booth #6251. Reference to Socket Mobile CCX compatibility can currently be found on the Cisco Web Site at http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/pr46/pr147/socket_p700.html "Theft of data and confidential information is a concern among organizations that have an increasing number of remote or mobile workers using handheld devices and laptops," said Bob Zink, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Socket Mobile. "By integrating Cisco CCX into our platform we are able to directly address the challenges our customers face in terms of security, interoperability and scalability regardless of their size or industry. While our SoMo 650 handheld computer is positioned as a durable PDA product, our Wi-Fi software and integrated WLAN offering along with our extended SocketCare service and technical support provide features we feel are unique in the industry for this class of device. In addition, the software extends the long heritage of Socket Mobile providing the industry with open systems software to enable third party products embedding our WLAN modules to take advantage of our e-WFC with CCX 4.0."

Availability

Socket Mobile Enhanced Wi-Fi Companion is available immediately as a software upgrade to existing Socket Mobile customers or as a WLAN plug-in card to businesses using third party, Windows Mobile 5.0 supported devices. New “Yahoo! Buzz” Enhances Internet’s Leading Starting Point with More Relevant, Open Content

[From Hans] Yahoo! Inc., (NASDAQ: YHOO) today introduced Yahoo! Buzz, an extension to Yahoo.com that opens up the Internet’s leading starting point by uncovering the most interesting and relevant content from websites across the Internet and bringing more buzz-worthy stories to the homepage of Yahoo!. Currently in beta, Yahoo! Buzz measures consumer votes and search patterns to identify interesting and timely stories and videos from large news sources as well as niche blogs around the Web. Top stories are then given primary editorial consideration for feature placement on Yahoo.com.

Yahoo! Buzz can highlight anything – a major news event, an intriguing video or image, or an interesting blog post – and instead of editors, real people vote and search for their favorite stories to determine the top rated content from across the Web. Yahoo! Buzz ranks the most popular content of the moment using a unique approach that combines consumer votes with search popularity to give a story a Buzz Score. This new initiative creates a lens on what people are most interested in to enhance relevance on the popular Yahoo.com, and help publishers deliver their best content to Yahoo!’s broad and diverse audience of more than 500 million users.

“Yahoo Buzz is a good example of how we are continuing to innovate and open up our key starting points to third party publishers, making Yahoo! more social and personally relevant for our half a billion consumers,” said Jeff Weiner, executive vice president, Yahoo! Network Division. “In addition, we recently announced that we will be opening up our user interface for Yahoo! Search, as well as creating a smarter inbox by opening up Yahoo! Mail, two other key ways that consumers start with Yahoo!.”

“With Yahoo! Buzz, we are building on the recent success of the homepage of Yahoo! and improving consumers’ favorite online starting point, by combining popular stories with the wisdom of real people to determine what is most engaging and relevant,” said Tapan Bhat, vice president, Front Doors and Network Services, Yahoo!. “Consumer engagement with the Yahoo! homepage has increased nearly 20 percent year-over-year, evidence that continuing to open up and provide consumers with direct links out to third party publishers keeps people coming back to Yahoo! again and again.”

Yahoo! Buzz Brings Publishers’ Content to Internet’s Largest Audience

Yahoo! Buzz builds on an openness initiative Yahoo! launched last year in which editors began highlighting third-party content from across the Web in the “Featured Today” module on Yahoo.com. This effort has already provided tremendous value for consumers and publishers, representing a first step in the creation of a more open system for Web content. “When Yahoo! linked to People.com’s Sexiest Man Alive coverage, referrals from Yahoo! increased by over 11 times versus the average day,” said Fran Hauser, President, People Digital.

“Getting a link on Yahoo!’s Front Page is like connecting to a fire hose,” said Evan Hansen, editor-in-chief, Wired.com. “Thanks to this program, we got more than 2 million page views in less than two hours from a single headline, helping to drive a 1400 percent increase in Yahoo! referral traffic versus the previous month and enabling us to reach a vast audience that may not otherwise see the stories we publish on Wired.com.”

In its beta phase, Yahoo! Buzz includes content from nearly 100 publishers, ranging from large online publishing brands to small, influential blogs, and will grow from there to open up to all publishers interested in having their content included in Yahoo! Buzz. Participating publishers are given an online ‘badge’ enabling their readers to vote and submit stories to Buzz in real-time. Stories with the highest Buzz Scores will be highlighted via direct links to the publishers’ sites from http://buzz.yahoo.com and submitted to Yahoo.com’s editors for possible coverage on the Yahoo! homepage. Additionally, Yahoo! allows users to submit Buzz stories to social news sites including delicious, Digg, Facebook, Propeller, Reddit and Stumbleupon.

New Tools for Publishers and Advertisers

As Yahoo! Buzz evolves, it will form the basis for an open ecosystem of publishers, advertisers and consumers. Yahoo! will develop this ecosystem by building out new syndication and monetization tools that enable publishers to share relevant content, connect to more advertisers and reach a broader audience. For example, a Yahoo! Buzz API will enable publishers to add customized Yahoo! Buzz modules or shortcuts to their sites to showcase their own most buzzed items or other popular stories on relevant topics. Over time, we expect this to extend into a powerful content exchange that connects owners of content with distributors of traffic.

SAMMY'S CENTRO DIARY: Tuesday Centro Thoughts

Great to see what Hannah is up to with her Centro. I've been having a relaxing day, chilling listening to some music on Pocket Tunes. I've also been using Chatteremail to catch up on email with friends getting priority in answering. I've also been playing Astraware Solitaire which is a fun game to play, and if you have not tried and tested the game then you should as its fun.

In the meantime I have posted a couple of times from my Centro to PalmAddict and I have Shortcut5 from Mark Tamura which allows me to paste common used phrases and definitions from abreviations stored which Shortcut5 expands. Its equally good for signatures and common phrases in instant messenger using Toccer.

In the meantime I hope that your having a good Tuesday. [mobloging from my Centro]

2 important steps you must know before restoring back your Treo

Everybody know how valuable a backup is for your mobile devices, but not all of us know exactly how to do it and what we must do in the process. Usually we realize we’ve missed some important steps when it’s already too late, like what have happened to me few days ago. I abused my Treo 750v with heavy use everyday, if you interested to know you can read it at previous post here. So I tried to restore it back to the state it was before, I uses Spb Backup (great application, I’ve reviewed it) and made a full backup of Treo with all of it’s PIMs, installed apps and settings. My rejoice didn’t last long, not all of what I had before could be restored back.

Here are what I’ve did wrong:

1.) I encrypted the miniSD card with the built-in feature from WinMob 6. When I plug it into PC desktop, the Windows XP couldn’t recognize the contents; where all of the file icons showed a lock picture. I should’ve checked them first before I hard-reset the Treo, because the Treo couldn’t recognize the contents either after I’ve done the hard-reset. You shouldn’t encrypted your memory card, but if security is your main concern; then you should at least backup the contents using your encryption device first. But what will happened if your encryption device got broken too, then the memory card’s contents can’t be read by anyone including you!

2.) If you’ve made a full backup of your mobile phones, then you should never erase or even format the memory card. I made a mistake by thinking that the full backup file could restore back all of the program file folders where all of the installed apps were. When the full backup restore completed, I only could sighed deeply to know that all of the apps were not there anymore… You should just let the memory card stays at your Treo’s memory slot until the whole full backup finished.

I hope by sharing those stupid mistakes I made, others can avoid to have a disastrous backup experience.

(blogged with my Treo 750v)

This will be my opportune moment to show off my new Smart-phone. I'm really excited as i can guarantee that they will be really interested to see how it works and whether this may be the next phone for them. As many of my friends have mobile phones they are very intrigued as to what is new out there that they can look out for to buy.

I will definitely be recommending the Centro to my friends, and now i can text them all as i have Hot Synced my Centro so i have all the correct contact details taken from my Mac-Book. It was really easy to install the Centro Hot Sync and now that is done i can update my Smart-phone all the time to keep it at it's best.

Did i also mention that with the charger you get different adapters so that no matter where my job or personal life i can charge my Centro wherever i go. i think that is a really good idea, and just goes to show that Palm have thought very hard about the Centro and have included all that you need to survive in the modern world today....because god forbid that my battery may go dead, and i'm not being sarcastic about this either, we all know how frustrating that this can be!

At the moment I really like the menu set up on the Centro, much like the Treo the tiled menu is easy for me to find the correct application that i need and so messing around is not really needed, especially should i need to find it quickly. I can press the letter the application starts with and the Centro will highlight the appropriate matches- a good thing to have if you're as busy as i am!

So far i am impressed with the Centro and how it works, however lets put this thing to the test and give it to someone who has not used one so that they can try and figure it out...let's see if the Centro is a good phone for first time users, that is the true test. Having used Smart-phones before it would be a good test to see if the Centro really is as easy to use as i find it. I will let you know tomorrow!

The rest of 2008 for Palm - anything good for Palm OS fans?

[From Chris2] So the GSM Centro has come and gone - so what can we expect for the rest of 2008 from our favourite gadget company? WinMob fans can look forward to the 800w (and all the hardware goodies it promises), and maybe even a revamped 500w with a touchscreen... But what about good old Palm OS?

It looks like we're going to get the Centro in all the colours all of the Treos have ever been available in... Is that it? No talk of a Treo|X or Centro|X? Is the 32GB HSDPA/GPS iPhone going to be announced without a peep out of Sunnyvale? But let's say come June and Palm DOES announce the abovementioned Treo|X and/or Centro|X - will that be enough? Will the fans say - "you had a year to develop your answer to the iPhone... AND THIS IS IT???" The choice of hardware under FrankenGarnet is limited to say the least... You'll either have a GSM/CDMA HiRes+ device with or without a keyboard, or a WiFi one... But not both... But isn't that enough? A new HiRes+ device with WiFi, even under a Treo badge will go a long way to stop the Palm fanatics from jumping ship to the iPod Touch. And market it the right way, and then you have an iPod Touch killer on your hands... The same for the CDMA/GSM version - it's a fully fledged widescreen phone/internet device that fits in your pocket.

And the same way that iPod Touch owners are eventually upgrading to an iPhone, you will have an upgrade path in a year's time to a Palm OS7 "Nova" device, with all the bells and whistles WinMob, BB, S60 and Apple devices have now. So it looks to me a way for Palm to keep SOME of its long time customers at least is to release one more PDA/PND/Media player type device this year - sooner rather than later, and then follow it up with an improved version in 2009 with Nova and all the rest...

Just my 2c (or 0.26c according to the lates Dollar/SA Rand exchange rate!) from the capitol city of South Africa...

Secure Networking with Palm

[From Joe Baughman - Ohio] I have never had much luck with VPN software on the Palm, they are overly complicated and always tended to crash on me. It sure would be nice if the Palm supported Port Forwarding via SSH. I do use pssh which allows you to make SSH connections with keys, but no port forwards, just a terminal session. SSH Port Forwarding is *so* much easier to use than a VPN and you could use it with lots of applications such as Remote Desktop, eMail or FTP. It would be ideal if a program like EZ-Remote had built-in support for SSH port forwarding so that you could remotely use your home PC with a secure key connection. It may be that this is beyond the current Palm OS capabilities. I hope that whatever comes next in the Palm World will have some support for SSH...

Greener World

[From .Rui de Castro] I've been using Palms for many years and one thing I have said many times in the past to everyone that haves looked at my Palm devices, is that, if everyone in the world used a device like me, the world would be a less polluted one.

The world would cut less trees because we didn't need so much paper to right down quick notes, buy paper based magazines, buy so many paper books, industrials make so many big stereos to here music, have so many TVs, car radios, so many computers, so many remote controls, etc... In our tiny Palm we could carry a library of: newspapers, magazines, meeting notes, all in one remote control, music, video, games, etc... Our workplace, desks, would be more cleaner. Wast so many pens and pencils, just write down in your Palm with the ambient friendly clean ink. Use so many batteries, Palm uses one lithium battery.

Sure Palm or any other device have also a bad side, but is the best we have at the moment. Theses little devices can help our world. Maybe in the near future, we can make a more organic, greener devices. The Iphone uses a glass screen, its a start. What we got now is better then nothing, don't you think?

My Treo 680 is a Handy E-Book Reader

[From Adam Albright] I've read long novels on my Treo using the free software CardTXT, and have never had a problem with eye strain. Friends of mine have asked me how I can read a book on such a small screen, and my answer is that it's like reading the text in a newspaper column. The later Harry Potter books were HUGE, and pulling out my phone sure beat carrying around those bricks!

Good News, Bad News, Good News

First and foremost, an open apology to Sammy and all those at PalmAddicts, the software and hardware companies that have forwarded me items for review (most notably Proporta and LobsterTunes -- expect reviews to be posted today and tomorrow) and most importantly, the readers who did not get the reviews that I promised to deliver.
The good news: my little family (wife, 3-1/2 year-old daughter and dog) is growing... a lot.  Sometime in early April, we are expecting TWINS.  The match ed set, one boy and one girl, are doing great so far and Mama is feeling fine (although large).
The bad news: My mother-in-law finally succumbed in her long battle with lung cancer after fighting with every ounce of strength she had for as long as possible.  She passed peacefully surrounded by family in Florida.
Finally, the good news again: I hope that the hysteria is past and I can move on to the arrival of the twins and all the joy it will bring.  And I figure that with all the sleepless nights in my future I will have plenty of opportunities to deliver PalmAddicts reviews and musings.

Choices for our tools

[From Joel Lee Lineberger] Making the switch from the TX to the 650 has been a smooth transition. However, I did have to get used to the smaller amount of memory. Sure I run as much as I can from the card; but still it takes a lot of room. On the onset of the switch, I made up my mind to try to start using the onboard calendar, tasks, and contact applications. I did so for quite a while. However, I finally found that I was just missing out on productivity. This got me thinking very seriously about what I actually use my PDA for. It is first and foremost a tool. I should treat it as such. I bought it to help me be more productive and to help me remember. I lost on both accounts because my main focus of my PDA was turned to entertainment. This is something that I believe we should all think about. Yes, our machines can do many wonderful things; but where is our focal point? I have since gone back to using Agendus. I love it! I am now more productive and remember to do more. This was the core reason for buying the unit in the first place. I read the Palm sites alot and find that many people complain that their Palm won't do this or do that. These things are not laptops. They have a specific purpose. We should never forget that. Yes, I wish that Palm would upgrade their datebook and so on. Maybe we will get that later on. But for right now, let us focus on the core reason for these things in our lives. It is my wish that Palm keeps putting out units that continuously focus on the real reason for these units. Keep going Palm!

Thinking of a HTC Vox

[From Simon, Cardiff, UK] Hi Sammy I'm a long time reader of PA, ever since I got my Treo 650 a couple of years ago. I've progressed to mobile 680 but am now torn beteween using that (which I prefer) and an HTC Vox WM6 device. I start my day checking my RSS feeds with a cup of tea in bed before checking my emails. Then to work and periodic checks of contact details calendar appointments and task to do's through the day. Occasional breaks with Bejeweled or the brilliant Wordpop. Back home and it's a hot sync to keep all my PIM data up to date. Out in the evening playing skittles (www.dpab.co.uk) I might use the camera for some photos. A busy old life! If I'm lucky enough to win, I'd love an Asus! This is posted from my Vox - The Treo's having a rest today.

SplashID by SplashData review (Blackberry version)

Continuity is a good thing, since moving to my Blackberry Curve I have found I missed a lot of my favourite Palm programs, one being SplashID which is use daily to store my tens of passwords and private information. RIM supply 'Password Keeper' with the Curve however it is basic compared to SplashID and has no desktop client. Thankfully I got asked to review SplashID for Blackberry (I must admit I didn't know Splashdata did BB ports until then!) and it's good to have a familiar product again.

I've used SplashID for several years now to keep track of all those passwords, financial details and other business and personal data. I have always found SplashID perfect for the job, it has plenty of categorisation and custom fields for various types of information from bank details to airline details or software keys (essential if you have 25 licenses of Windows to keep track of!), it's just so customisable, plus you can separate business and personal data making life even easier.

One of the best features of SplashID is the desktop client; when you sync (on BB, Palm and I would imagine WinMo) it syncs your SplashID encrypted database with the client allowing you to access and add/modify/remove entries, and it allows the same database to be used by multiple devices (I share mine between my BB and my Treo), it comes in Windows and Mac flavours too.

With SplashID security is obviously the biggest issue, you set a main access password (I use an alpha-numeric-symbolic pass as I am paranoid) that unlocks the database, and should some unscrupulous person attempt to access the database, after 10 incorrect entries the database is locked, and i believe deleted (although I am not going to check this one!). The database is encrypted with 256bit Blowfish encryption which means it is nearly uncrackable (anything can be broken with enough time and equipment).

Sufficed to say there is only one program I trust my confidential data to; and that's SplashID!

New Treo 600 user enjoying it

[From David and Debbie (Fife, Scotland)] A few weeks ago I metioned my partner Debbie was going to try my old 600 after the battery on her mobile started playing up. Well a couple of weeks on and she is well into it. The obvious apps are used daily, phone and messaging along with a few games. I had deliberately just put minimal software on it until she masters the basic phone and then will say about some enhancements. I am pretty sure she won't bother though as she likes the clean straight forward way the 600 works just now.

She loves the threaded chat style that replied to texts form making it easy to follow what you had said to someone. The qwerty keypad offers ease of use and less errors when writing texts. The phone app and contacts work well and involves less clicks than a normal phone. The call log is also handy and gives more info than her previous phone. That's just 2 apps that make her enjoy her Treo let along that she has Freejongg, Sudoko and Pyramid Solitaire wherever she is. I will hold back and not interfere with loading more on the 600 or in her learning expireince. The only thing she can't understand is why Treos are not that wildly seen in the UK when there is hardly an American show on telly that there aint a Treo at some point. The Nokia would be my choice in the competition currently running.

HANNAH'S TREO DIARY: Time to make my Centro talk to my Mac

So the afternoon looks like this with my Centro. I need to install the Hot Sync on my laptop for my Centro so that i can update my Centro with my contacts from my MacBook and update programmes etc. this will allow my Centro to be totally up-to-date with my computer so that i can take all the information i need with me to meetings, etc so one device is all i need to carry.

This morning i have been used the Centro to call contacts of mine for work, and by sync my address book from my Mac will mean that all of the contact information will be up-to-date and i will not have to double check the telephone numbers manually.

I will let you know how i get on with the installation CD and Hot Sync of my Centro, but up to know i feel that it will be straight forward and easy to understand, thats what i have come to love about my Centro, it's so easy to use.

I've just changed my Tungsten C to a Treo 650

[From ern0] I've just changed my Tungsten C to a Treo 650. As the other Palm phones, it has no WIFI. But I have a notebook, and I've bought a cheap bluetooth USB stick. I've also installed M-Router to share WIFI net via Bluetooth, and a freeware auto-shutdown software, which turns off the computer at 2:00 a.m. every day. Then, now I can read my favourite webpages at home in the bed, as I did with T|C, and I also plug the USB card into the notebook at my workplace.

Rohdesign Podcast 02 - SXSW Interactive Edition is available for your listening pleasure

Mike Rohde has put together a Podcast and it is available for your listening pleasure. " this second episode, I talk about the positive response to the 1st episode, planning my SXSW schedule, streamlining and improving the process of producing this podcast with GarageBand, and getting my analog and digital tools organized. GarageBand is wonderful for producing podcasts. It's simple, yet offers many features to streamline the process. I can record audio and filter it to sound better on one layer (you can hear the difference comparing episodes 01 and 02), drop the intro and exit music on 2 separate layers, and then embed an image and add text on a fourth metadata layer. It's like Photoshop for audio! Once everything is tuned and organized, I can simply generate an combined MP3 file to the desktop or iTunes, ready for putting on the server. Awesome! Thanks for your feedback. The podcasts are going over well. Look for episode 03 to be released the week I leave for SXSW — keep the feedback coming!" Make the jump to Rohdesign.

iPass Releases Latest Version of iPassConnect(TM) Mobility Manager for Windows Vista

[From Krisk] iPass, Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAS), a global provider of services that unify enterprise mobility management, today announced a new version of its iPassConnect(TM) mobility manager for Microsoft's Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000.

"The iPassConnect mobility manager is a core element of our mission to make it as easy as possible for companies to manage their mobile connections and devices," said Moshe Elgressy, vice-president of product management at iPass. "We expect there to be significant enterprise uptake of Vista notebooks and use of 3G mobile data and Wi-Fi hotspots in 2008, and our mobility manager software will help enterprises deliver simple, unified and global mobile workforce solutions."

As the user interface to the iPass Mobile Office service, the iPassConnect mobility manager provides a consistent login experience across the world's largest multi-technology virtual network of 3G mobile broadband, 90,000 active Wi-Fi and Ethernet locations, as well as dial-up in 160 countries. The software also acts as the endpoint presence of iPass' management platform, administering policies and collecting valuable data related to remote and mobile connectivity and device status.

Key features include:

-- One-click login makes connection faster, easier and more secure by fully automating the enterprise network login process including detection of Wi-Fi, Ethernet or 3G networks; protected connection to preferred networks; launch of required security software such as VPN, anti-virus, or personal firewall products; and Live Logon onto the user's Windows desktop.

-- Enhanced mobile data support for dozens of mobile data cards allows companies to lower support and connectivity costs by standardizing on iPassConnect as their sole on-ramp to the Internet and corporate network.

-- Built-in searchable directory helps users quickly locate nearby hotspots while they're offline through a simple keyword search.

-- Increased customization capabilities based on centrally-managed profiles and custom scripts that direct activities before, during, and after the connectivity session.

-- Low-cost mobile device management through integration with the iPass online management platform, which provides simple, automated deployment, configuration and upgrades.

The iPass Mobile Office service is designed to help companies reduce overall laptop and handheld mobility costs by replacing expensive individual Wi-Fi and 3G usage with a one-stop-shop for global broadband access combined with unified management of mobile connections and devices. Device platforms supported by iPass Mobile Office include Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Windows Mobile and Symbian OS. The service is priced on a flat-rate, active-user basis, which helps companies reduce the cost of idle subscriptions and avoid fee overruns from heavy users.

Nokia Morph

[From Rita El Khoury, Lebanon] Yesterday Nokia Research Center announced in conjunction with the Cambridge UK a project called Morph. It's a nanotechnology-based device that looks like it's coming running out of a sci-fi movie. It "morphs" according to your needs, stretches, transforms from a tablet-like to a phone-like device to a bluetooth headset and a watch. It self-cleans, changes colors, smells the air around you, is environmental-friendly, and well, could make Minority Report look so last decade'ish! Nokia expects to ship some nanotechnology inside devices in around 7 years. By looking at the project video, you can see what we are aiming at in the future. Seriously, if someone told you, 10 years ago that you would be viewing videos, uploading pictures, instant messaging and emailing people, checking websites at mind-blogging speeds from something smaller than the palm of your hands, and as easy as it could be, would you have believed? Hell no, and well, I wouldn't be surprised to see something like the Morph in 10 years. It's an amazing world we are living in!

Missing a part of my brain

[From Dror B. Helper, Tel-Aviv Israel] I just went on a month without my palm device. I was traveling to a far away country and just couldn't take the chance that it would get lost or damaged - so I left it at home. Going without the palm was possible but I kept on finding myself in situations that I need it. The flight was long and boring without my e-book & games collections. I lost addresses and phone numbers written on small notes. I couldn't view the pictures I took without a computer (which I didn't bring along). Not to mention I missed friend birthday without my calendar. And so although not a really a necessity – the palm device really makes the difference.

HANNAH'S TREO DIARY: Centro, first time alone

Ok so last night was my first night alone with my Centro. I had a chance to really check out what the gadget was all about and could decide what my true first impressions of the device really were.

At a glance the Centro really is a perfect specimen of a Smartphone, especially for lady such as myself who loves to text and email using my Smartphone. The QWERTY keyboard is such a good thing to have to type quickly and effectively.

The overall model itself is sleek and with no aerial you can fit more into your handbag! I could easily fit the Centro in my pocket and so it meant i didn't have to rummage in my bag to get the phone when it rang.

I managed to have a mess about with the camera and video features on the phone- which i have to admit were a lot better tan some mobile phones which have come out recently. I managed to take a few funny videos on the Centro which, if possible i will try to upload these later on in the week. I also changed the preferences to me liking. I find that about most mobile phones; the phone doesn't feel like your own until you have changed the settings to your own preferences.

Up to now I have used my Centro to make calls- good sound quality and easy to make calls- and to text people - love the messenger style the texts have so you can view your whole conversation.

I am really pleased with the Centro up to now. A very handy gadget to have that will keep me intrigued for a long time yet. I'll let you know how my day at work goes with the Centro later on today.

TreoCentral has done a review of Astraware's Solitaire Collection

TreoCentral has done a review of Astraware's Solitaire Collection which is very good. "In closing, Astraware’s Solitaire builds upon their already rich reputation for delivering extremely high-quality and high-value games that look sharp and behave themselves, while using as few system resources as possible, and are jam-packed with help screens and other thoughtful features. This is definitely a gem of a game that will maintain its play vs. pay ratio for a long time to come. Every time I dive into a new Astraware title, I’m just knocked out by the overall quality, inventiveness, and features. This software house really knows how to deliver, and I’ve got a couple more new Astraware titles simmering on the review burner, coming soon to a TreoCentral.com near you." Read in full.

Retro Teasers On Ebay

[From David Ross ( Fife Scotland)] My first Palm OS device was a Handspring Visor Deluxe over 6 years ago. I can remember my then 3 month old daughter Tegan being choked with a cold and unsettled on Christmas Day. I had her in a front carrier snuggled into me whilst I played cards on my brand new Visor. I thought the Springboard slot would be great to expand its capabilities but alas the addons were always just out of my price reach. The only addon I bought for it was a Fellows Keypad which was great for working on documents with a free version of Wordsmith I had gotten on a PDA Essential disk. If you look on Ebay, Springboard module are now far and few between these days, I wish I had looked there 2 or 3 years ago. So imagine my suprise at seeing this on Ebay, aSpringboard GPS for Handspring PDAs

I think the included software is for the UK again it just ok, get handmap its cheap and great."

Ten Apps to a Better Treo or Centro is an interesting read over at the Palminfocenter

Ten Apps to a Better Treo or Centro is an interesting read over at the Palminfocenter. "One grievance I often hear is that the Palm OS is so out of shape and antiquated, an OS well past its prime if you will. While I won't dispute that the Palm OS has seriously outlived its prime, with a few additional applications the Palm OS based smartphones can match, and in many cases vastly outperform the competition. Whether your an old time palmhead or just picked up your first Centro there is bound to be some software you can use to liven up your smartphone. In this article I highlight some of the top notch, must have Palm OS titles for your Treo or Centro."

PictureLink

[From Eric Mann] Here is one from Eric Mann and I think we may have mentioned this previously when Danny sent word last week, but it sure is a cool program and it's called PictureLink. With short cut link you no longer have to search the Contact to dial your most dialed number. You can even assign the short cut key to any hard button and instantly dial the person. All short cuts can be assigned to a hard key for quick launch. If you are a PocketTunes user you can easily create short cut play list and instantly switch playlist without launching PocketTunes. Always On

A Palm program that I use on my Centro is something called "Always On" I have used it on a number of my Palm devices over the years and the Centro is no exception. A word of warning if you set "Always On" permanently then it is likely to drain your battery. It is free and a almighty useful program. Available from persicke.de
