You know you're a hopeless geek when......

This jumped out at me from my JK On The Run RSS feed this afternoon, "You know you're a hopeless geek when
- You can't concentrate on anything while waiting for the gadget delivery person.
- You get your box cutter out first thing on delivery day just so it's ready when the gadget arrives.
- You stop in your tracks every few minutes every time you hear a truck drive down the street."
There is so much more to this, anyway, read in full at JK On The Run

Kinoma is doing a great job at streaming You Tube movies on my Centro

I have to say that one of my favourite applications on the Centro just has to be Kinoma Player which I have been using on the Treo 650 and the Centro this week. The program is pretty awesome and does a great job at playing my movies and DVD's right from my memory card without any problems at all. Kinoma does more than just stream movies, it can using a high speed data connection or through the enfora wifi sled can stream You Tube movies. Depending on the data connection you have Kinoma will stream the You Tube movies for you and allow you to watch or you can convert them directly to your computer and transfer to a SD Memory Card and watch at your pleasure. I have tried both streaming, which worked well and saving to my Mac, through the conversion of a great program called iSquint which converts the movies for me and allows me to transfer them to my SD card so I can watch in my own time. Whatever you use Kinoma Player for I hope that you get as much pleasure out of this program as I have on the Centro.

So a couple of hours what I have been doing with my Centro

OK, so I hot sync'd my Centro with my Mac and so far everything installed fine. The battery was at 50% and now, three or so hours later I have about 25% and I have been using it pretty much continuously. I have really not had to change my settings, my Hot Sync seemed to do it all. I am and have been for some time using the excellent Missing Sync for Palm by MarksSpace which is excellent. I cannot believe how small the Centro is compared to the Treo 680 and the former Treo 650, it's also somewhat lighter too.

So far this afternoon I have checked my email using Chatteremail, checked my RSS feeds through QuickNews and played some tunes using the excellent Pocket Tunes. Can I make an observation, the Centro seems somewhat quicker than any of the Palm devices that I have used to date. Opening up my MicroSD memory card which has a stash of pictures and accessing them via SplashPhoto is somewhat fast and it rendered my pictures quickly.

PATV155 - The Palm Centro Is In Da House As We Unbox Edition

Palm were very kind to give us a Centro and I have to say that wow I forgot just how small this little baby is I played with one when I was in the US a month or so ago and forgot just how small it was. In this 10 minute edition, I unbox the unlocked GSM Centro and power it up. Over the weekend I will test it out, and use it and give you my thoughts. In the meantime the Europe unlocked Centro is of course available from the Palm Europe website and in the US you can check out the Palm Centro on Palm.com which is tied to applicable networks including AT&T

Crystal clear protection for your PSP ‘Slim & Lite’

[From Hannah at Proporta] With the Sony PSP ‘Slim and Lite’ being 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than the original PSP, it’s only too important that it’s protected in a way that is not only practical, but also suitable for its funky slim line image.

Coming very soon to Proporta is the Alu-Crystal Case (Sony PSP Slim and Lite). Using only the best at Proporta; it’s even made from the same type of durable and scratch resistant polycarbonate plastic that's used to make protective eyewear. Impressive hey?

All the necessary cutouts allow access to all ports and controls, so there’ll never be any need to remove your device from its case.

Proporta’s Alu-Crystal Cases are shatterproof, shock absorbent, and provide crystal clear protection that is unbelievably tough and leaves your Sony PSP Slim and Lite on display for all to admire.

For extra protection for your Sony PSP Slim and Lite, Proporta recommend their Advanced Screen Protector, to protect it from scratches, scrapes and dust evasion. Made from a new ultra high-clarity plastic, Proporta have even been able to improve the thickness without impairing screen brightness or clarity. And an added bonus - this protector is also fully washable and replaceable.

P.S. If you travel everywhere with your PSP, you may find use in the Proporta Essential Travel Bundle – it contains everything you need to make sure you never run out of battery when on the move.

My Review of Westward by Astraware

Guide your townsfolk to make camp and build communities. Explore 4 different locations over more than 20 levels. Create and customise towns using more than 25 types of building. Includes additional side levels for extra Frontier fun. Track down the Mad Russian and bring him to justice! Experience the life of a Frontier settler in the wild, rough and tumble world of Westward®!

Based on the highly acclaimed PC game by Sandlot Games, Westward® offers many hours of absorbing game play as you guide your townsfolk in making camp, collecting valuable resources, seeing-off dangerous bandits, and building their communities.

As you progress through Westward®, you'll explore 4 different locations over more than 20 levels as your hopeful citizens set up towns and seek their fortune in the Old Wild West. With over 25 types of building you'll customize your town and attract new citizens whilst completing a range of side tasks and chasing down the Mad Russian to bring him to justice. In other words, your in control and don't expect to get any work done because your going to be playing this game for hours.

Welcome to the Wild Wild West, back in the day when villagers were set up by “settlers” and where mining gold and lumbering timber was the main source of income on which people need to get by in life with no hassles. A time where supermarkets we not around and food truly was organic, where the local sheriff of his town rode on horse back, like the cat that really had got the cream and where a small town man was offered the bank managers daughter in offer of setting up new towns.

Well the last part cannot be said to be true of all classic westerns, however in Westward that is exactly what happens. The main character Maureen Fitzsimmons (Bank Managers Daughter) and Marion Morrison will lead the way through this digital life you must lead in the Wild West leaving you to focus on being the brains of the settlement. Being the main to characters they need to collect food and wood in order to start off the town and create a nice environment to attract other travellers to your town.

This game is highly addictive and though it takes time for you to settle in at the start it is definitely worth the wait. The game lets you control the inhabitants of the town, in which you have to house them and provide jobs, food and water so that they will not go hungry. The further you progress throughout the game, the more land you are given in different places and the more “settlers” you have to look after. You as the main leader are given the tasks to lead the settlers forward to a better standard of living and hopefully have all of your towns’ people in one piece when you finish.

The graphics of the game are excellent. As the player, you have so much to think about with the entire running of the settlement that the graphic, as long as they are readable, really do not need to be overwhelming.

The concept of the game itself is a really clever idea. Having to look after the trials and tribulations of running a town in which multiple characters live can be much like modern day life and having to look after each character individually is stressful at times and also means that you get quite attached to the town, because god forbid you should leave them as they will die, and you don’t want that on your hands now do you.

This game grabs your attention and keeps you hooked, no matter what is going on in the outside world, as each character, once they find a home and given a job, will look after themselves you must then find new ways to improve the village and maintain the lifestyle of those around you. As you arrive at the new settlement a task is presented to you which you have to work towards, I managed to complete the first settlement in which I had to raise money which had been lent off the bank in order to set up the first settlement. Once completed you move onto other sites in which you will be given a new task to work towards, all in all a good test of capability and organisational skill for the player.

To get an idea of the game, think of Sim City but more addictive. Once again Astraware have come up with another awe inspiring game which will leave the user playing Westward for hours. It's both gripping and addictive and leaving you for more. In summary one of the best games I have played on a mobile device period but don't count on getting any work done because you will be playing this game for hours. Top marks Astraware!!

You can get a free trial of Westward from here and is available for both Palm OS and Windows Mobile, and Windows Mobile for Smartphone and retails for $19.95. Make the jump to Astraware.

Review: SplashPhoto from SplashData

Splash Photo is an excellent image viewing package from Splash Data. Splash Photo provides a large array of useful features and a desktop app to accompany it. There are a great handful of viewing options. The 'Gallery View' is great for getting a quick look at all your photos. The 'Thumbnail View' gives you the title of each photo. 'Detail View' gives you more information and the 'List View' is just that, a list of all the photos, including file size. Splash Photo also has a slide show feature that includes a music sound track.

While for the most part with the exception of the desktop application (not review here or used by the reviewer) Splash Photo provides the same or similar functionality as the built-in Camera and Media applications that come with Palm (well the Treo 650).

Lets Compare:

Splash Photo Camera + Media (based on Treo650)
Photo viewer 4 display options, gallery, thumbnails, detailed, and simple list. 2 views: gallery and detailed
Full Screen Viewer zoom to fit, zoom with pan scan. can open almost any size photo pan scan only, limit on size of image that can be viewed.
Slide show Slide show with music soundtrack option. none
Organization Categories stored in database, collections can be mixed on card and internal memory Categories defined by folder name.
Camera Simple clean interface with 2x zoom feature. Preference for camera include several levels of quality and 3 resolutions (160x120, 320x240, 640x480) more on-screen preferences, 2x zoom, category,  2 resolution options (320x240, 640x480).
Movie None (photo app) Built-in video recorder and player
Image & Detail Editing name, category and location editing only, other editing feature provided by desktop app. name, category, location, and image rotation

So with the exception of the slide show feature and the ability to open images of almost any size, everything else is available with the built-in tools. Unfortunately one feature missing from Splash Photo that bothers me is that of image rotation, I often take portrait photos with my Treo and the missing feature means I have to go back to the Media app to preform such a simple operation, I understand that on a wide-screen device, images are auto-rotated for the screen, but on my 650 no such luck. One other gripe I have about Splash Photo is its category storage. I personally like the fact that Media simply creates a directory for each category, it makes it much easier for locating photos directly on the card.

Overall, over the time I spent with Splash Photo preparing for this review, I think Splash Photo has won its place on my Palm as a great viewing tool. Without question, the slide show feature is great and makes my Treo and instant mini photo frame for my desk. I'll keep the built-in Camera app for photo taking, but for viewing I'll be using Splash Photo. I guess I'll have to get use to re-organizing my photos in two places. One major plus for Splash Photo is the fact that Splash Photo is available for almost all mobile platforms (Palm, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and Symbian) which makes it easier to carry photos from device to device with little confusion, desktop application is even available for both Mac and Windows. With today's options, one never know when one may choose to switch platforms.

Check out http://splashdata.com/splashphoto for a free 30-day trial or a 60-day money back guarantee and make your own decision.

Time for you to hurry if you want to be entered into the MacBook Air giveaway as it ends at midnight US PT this Sunday

Time for you guys to hurry, if you guys wish to be entered into my MacBook Air throwaway as I am going to end this one at midnight US PT this forthcoming Sunday so that means get your skates on. So if you want a chance at getting your hands on it then you need to get me your user thoughts into me as soon as possible. As usual the guidelines are pretty much the same as usual and you can find them in the post at the top of the page or here.

Using a Palm Zire 72

[From Daniel "DJ" Orta] I am currently a student at a small college, and organization was always a chore for me. I'd write down homework assignments on little scraps of paper that i'd have lying around the bottom of my bag, which for practical use, never really helped. I did finally start to use a Palm Zire 72s (a hand me down from a gadget loving aunt), which has helped my school routine fall into a much more organized system. I'd use Yesterday for classwork applications, which keeps my deadlines for homework and classwork organized and synced. iSync with the Palm Desktop conduit has been a breeze for syncing the calendar and the contacts with my mac. And if i have a reading i need to do, i'll find the pdf for my book and throw it on the palm pilot to go- it's cheaper than printing it out at the school computer lab. It's not the best system in the world, but when i need to stay organized, it's there for me every step in the way (so far).

My Beloved Palm III

[From Eric Thomas, Winnipeg, Manitoba] I suppose my first real experience with mobile technology was with a Palm III. I was working as a consultant at the time and had high hopes of being able to use this new wonder in taking notes while at client sites. It was an exercise (in frustration, at times) but I could see where this technology was going. I wished daily that my Palm would die when the color screens came out. But, that Palm was built like a tank and lasted, seemingly, forever. At the time, the only real reason for a color screen was to play PacMan in color, but it was an exciting prospect nevertheless.

It's funny. There are times when I miss that greyscale beast. There is something to be said for the connections that we make with our beloved personal mobile technology. I have since moved on from Palm, greyscale, and AAA batteries. I use a smartphone daily (or, I should say, every few minutes). Cell technologies and miniaturization have really come along way since the Palm III. The connected mobile lifestyle is becoming less of an exercise and more of a reality each day.

So Close to Making My Palm TX an iPod touch

[From Timothy Doran] I use my Palm TX to help me be more productive. I must admit, though, that I have spent considerable time looking at productivity software and gadgets in an all too often futile quest for easier methods of managing information. I have now figured out what combination of software and gadgets would work for me.

First of all, I need pocketable device with a fully functional modern web browser. I use GTD TiddlyWiki for my todo lists, projects and notes. This works great on my computer, but I haven't yet figured out how to get it to work on my Palm TX. Angstrom Opie for Palm TX, a mobile port of Linux available at hackndev.com, has the potential, I think, to run a browser like Opera, but I haven't been successful yet at installing Opera or any other new software on this OS. Since I use Linux almost exclusively on my laptop, I am hopeful eventually I will be able to overcome this obstacle. If a decent browser and calendar application that is compatible with both Opie and my laptop can be made to work on Opie, my Palm TX will be able to do about 95% of what I want. The remaining obstacle is Wifi, which currently doesn't work under Linux, but doing a soft reset restores Garnet, so I can still access the web. Then of course, I am stuck with using Blazer.

In short, I am trying to turn my TX into iPod touch. If I can come so close to turning my TX into something with the functionality of an iPod touch, why can't Palm make something that equals or surpasses the Apple's mobile products?

Possible Forthcoming PA Reader MeetUps

I'm in Dubai in at the end of May and spending almost a month in NYC in June, so with that in mind I am possibly looking into PA Reader Meetups. To generate interest, if you would like to attend a PA Meetup in Dubai [end of May] and NYC [middle of June onwards] then please send me a email with either DUBAI or NYC in the subject line depending on your desired location so we can assess demand which will help me determine locations etc. Our reader meetups are always well received with good turn out and is an excellent opportunity to network plus there are always prizes etc. I'll do a repeat post of this a little later today. Previous PA Reader Meetup Locations have been in Manchester, UK, Liverpool, UK, New York City, US [4 times], & Rome, Italy [last year] - sammualjamesmcloughlin@gmail.com

Treo as basic CRM tool

I freelance and use my Treo to keep my customer requests in order. I visit schools to perform shows related to science and I use the immensely handy notes that can be attached to a diary entry to keep a record of everything associated with that day's visit.

I have posted before about Palm's inability to provide a compelling enough product to compete in today's market but I am considering a Centro to replace my tired 650. It depends on whether I can type on the tiny keyboard and whether the iPod touch SDK delivers enough new functionality ("Docs to Go" would be enough to allow me to consider finally and regretfully deserting Palm...)

My "p" key has finally given up the ghost on the Treo. It's ut me in a roer ickle!

Once my calendar was a mess, full with blots, strokes and countless alterations...

[From Jan Gilhuis] Once my calendar was a mess. Full with blots, strokes and countless alterations. My addressbook was even worse and also full of yellow sticky papers. I work in Amsterdam ,in the Netherlands, with drug addicts, alcoholics, psychiatric patients, homeless people and sometimes all of these together. When working with these people my addressbook filled rapidly. Addresses of hospitals, lawyers, prisons, psychiatrist, departments of the Salvation Army, hostels, social workers and so on. A lot of appointments to. Painfully I noticed that I to often forgot to many of these appointments…. Enter: the Palm V. Quiet a bliss! I was warned in advance that I would have an appointment and was ready to prepare myself. With my Palm my addresses were always up to date and readable. When a colleague wanted to make a list of all the important contacts in our field for our department I had only to give him the content of my Palm adressbook. Important things to remember were written in memos. Things were also easy to look up. In the busy surroundings of my work I became properly organised! When someone was looking for some address he was told ask Jan: he will probably have it in his Palm!

At certain moment I discovered HandyShopper. I still use it for my daily shopping and also to be sure that at certain moment all my holiday stuff is packed. Quiet sometime ago I read something about a game called Bejeweled: it is still on my favourites list.

For my work it’s also handy to have a list with all the available prescription drugs in the Netherlands. Before the size of telephone directory now very small part of my 2GB memorycard.

Nowadays I have a TX with a beautiful screen. At this moment I do a lot of office work: headphone on and listening music of Bach and Schumann on Pocket Tunes makes my day! Checking my mail at home happens very fast wit the TX. Before I have started my pc I have already finished reading my mails on my Palm. So that’s why I am checking my mail mostly on my TX. I am using it also for a lot of other things to. I use Metronome sometimes when playing music. The games also help to keep my 10 year son quiet when we have tot wait somewhere. Am I content with the TX? Be sure of that! Greeting Sammy! Always nice to read PalmAddicts!

Treo and Chemotherapy

[From Richard Barnes] I recently had surgery to remove a colon cancer and am now taking chemotherapy in pill form. Because this is some really serious medicine with potential side effects, they encourage you to keep a written log of when you take your medicine, how you feel and any side effects. Well, what better way to keep a log than on the Treo 755p that I have with me constantly?

You could keep a log in a number of ways but I chose to use Memo Leaf (http://www.redwood-creative.com/global/memoleaf.htm). It is an inexpensive program with some of very useful features for people like me who keep large amounts of reference information. I just checked - I have 3,182 memos.

Since I take chemotherapy drugs in three-week cycles, I use one memo per cycle. I have a template set up based on what worked for the first cycle. I use the "key bank" feature to simplify entry. One tap enters date and time. A couple more enter the most common log entries. The normal sequence is to take one drug immediately after breakfast and supper. I then wait 30 minutes and take the second drug. Memo leaf even includes a very handy alarm feature I can set to remind me so I don't forget to take the second drug 30 minutes later.

Once I set it up, it takes very little time and effort and produces a memo with complete list of dose times and any other factors that might be of significance. When I have my next appointment with the doctor, I print the memo from Outlook and take it with me. Simple and easy.

Another week, another trip with my iPhone

[From Ken, Atlanta, GA] Sammy, Another week, another trip. Fortunately, my iPhone helped guide me home. I must say that the built in Google map application is outstanding. While it's not a true GPS program, it's about as close as you can get without spending more money. It certainly came in handy during my last business trip. After visiting a client to demo our software product, we were in a mad rush to get back to the airport to catch our flights. No directions, no maps but no worry as the iPhone Google Maps application came to the rescue. With the latest iPhone update, you get the Google Map update as well. Simply tap the locate icon and the GSM towers triangulate your location, getting pretty darn close. Close enough to give a basic view and combined with the detailed maps, a good idea which streets to take and in what direction, traffic too...outstanding. The longer I have and use my iPhone, the more I find myself relying on it. While I certainly felt the same with my prior Treos but the iPhone's screen puts it in a league of its own.

Lighter than Air

[From Wanda Martin, Lenoir, North Carolina] I read your site all the time and I'm always learning something new to help me out with my Palm TX. I've found so many games through your website and I always enjoy reading the comments and little stories that your readers send in. I don't know of any other site like Palm Addict where you can find so much information and the site has such a friendly atmosphere. My daughter recently got a new laptop and she let me have her old one. I really appreciate the laptop and I've been reading Palm Addict on it in the comfort of my living room chair lately. This is a nice change as I used to have to always sit at my desktop computer to surf the internet. I've been seeing the tv commercials for the MacBook Air and it's so amazing how thin it looks. I've never seen one in person but it looks almost paper thin. I'm in awe each time I see that commercial where the person takes the laptop out of that manila envelope. I can't imagine how light the MacBook Air must be. It looks lighter than air. Now this would be a great laptop to carry with you everywhere you go. Apple really knows what they're doing. I'm just waiting now to see if someone comes up with an even thinner laptop than the MacBook Air. Could that even be possible?

Insomnia

[From Juan E] I often travel to visit my friends, this time to Zaragoza, four hundred km. far from my home. I use to take a small luggage with me, all the stuff that i could use for a couple of days , i never carry a laptop , because when i m not working i prefer to travel light. Instead my palm TX do whatever i need. Checking the mail and the weather are the most common uses with my cell phone help. Reading and watching movies the second. For this purposes , i use avantgo , great discovering, NewYork times my favorite , and TCPMP, to watch films. When i arrive to my friends house , i enjoy talking with everybody and almost forget about my electronic equipment.............. until night. If we don´t go out to have some drinks and stay home to continue with the chat after supper (sobremesa), we use to go very late to sleep and is very common for me to suffer insomnia. Spending the night at your friends home , could be a little unconfortable sometimes, to get use to a new bed , a new room , the lack of bedlamps..... my palm TX , save me in this moments, in the middle of the night, without turning the lights on, i can enjoy reading newspapers, RSS, books, watching films , playing solitaire , organizing the agenda , making resolutions , sending mails across the atlantic .....................until get tired and ready for sleep .
