My Mobile Device Does Everything

[From Peter Schott] Well, just about. I use my PDA for phone, internet, games, e-books, music, impromptu pictures (only if I forget the real camera, though), tasks, lists, and just about anything I really need with me that makes sense to do on a PDA. I pretty much now use my all-in-one device to organize my life events and keep me entertained. Do I have a wish list? Of course. I'd love devices to have more RAM (storage) and RAM (memory to run apps) available by default. It's relatively cheap now. I'd love a higher clock speed and better graphics adapters/drivers. I'd really love my device to have an OS I can upgrade apart from the manager or someone hacking a new OS together to work on my device. Having the ability to use stylus, fingers, or keypad is a great feature. The new iPhone has some neat features, but without a keyboard or any real hard buttons it's just not that attractive to me. I really like the PDA phones that have a sliding qwerty keyboard, but still have 9 actual buttons on the front to use for phone dialing. I can dial by touch-screen, but it's kind of hard. Still, I use my HTC Wizard for just about everything that makes sense to do with a PDA.

Auto Trakker

Aito TrakkerThis seems a great pda program to record vechicles of up to 15 on things such as litres. "You have the capability to monitor records using the units of your choice. That is, liters versus gallons or Mpg versus km/L and many more. The option to convert existing database entries to different units is available too. Auto Trakker builds on to the already popular Fuel Trakker program. Fuel records can be entered in any order. There is a built in validation checker to verify data entries. For example, more recent entries must have higher odometer readings and vice versa. Unlike other programs that have you calculate the distance you traveled from the previous fuel purchase then enter the value into the program, Auto Trakker handles all of the operations for you. You can even enter records out of order, just as long as the new entry meets Auto Trakker’s validation requirements."

Pear Holiday

HoildayThis seems a great program of the most popular Hoildays from all over the world." You can easily move from one country to another using comfortable program interface and you can export holidays into MemoPad and DateBook. Besides there is a special section in program which includes only religious holidays so it is very comfortable to find them. Holidays database will be enlarged in the nearest updates."

Stand-Alone PDAs

[From Jon Bixby] I am a long-time PDA user who is struggling to keep alive a beloved Sony Clie T-665C. It's an indispensible part of my life. I rely on DateBk6 to keep track of appointments and other events and have a large collection of icons to make it easy to see what's up in the full-month view. While I understand the attraction of smartphones, I have found ways to access information I need without mobile access to the Internet. Zagat to Go gives me restaurant listing for New York City that are updated periodically on the Handmark Web site. Pocket TV browser gives TV listings I update through HotSynch every couple of days. The free version of Vindigo has movie show times, and Metacritic on Avantgo has reviews of new movies. I am considering buying a Palm TX for Palm OS5 and wi-fi access to the Internet, which is as far as I'm interested in going toward mobile browsing. This may be because I have little need to check e-mails when I'm away from the office.

Brighthand has done a review of the OtterBox 1921 Palm Treo Case Review

Brighthand has done a review of the OtterBox 1921 Palm Treo Case Review which for ultimate protection is worth it. "While many devices have gained popularity for their style or function, Palm Treo devices have carved out a niche of being versatile enough for many vertical industries. And for those industries, it is not just having the power of a connected device like a Treo that is important, but also protecting that information in the harshest of conditions. The OtterBox line of hard cases for Treos and other mobile devices does just that. And with the OtterBox 1921 case for the Treo 680/750/755p models, protection takes on a surprisingly functional approach."

PATV152 - The PogoStylus Edition

PATV152 is one for those of you who use iPhone's or have a iPod Touch, it's something called the Pogo Stylus and it is a great alternative method to text input, think of it as a stylus. I love it and give it a great 10 out of 10, a very good accesory. This edition of PATV sees me demonstrate it. Is it a lazy way to input or a time saver? You decide nevertheless it is very good and available from www.tenonedesign.com

PATV is sponsored by SmartboxDesign.com. Fantastic games for both Palm OS and Windows Mobile.

The Future of Mobile Computing

[From Jonathan, Toronto, Canada] Mobile computing will reach its ultimate perfection when operating systems on the mobile side and non-mobile side unify. There will be no more "phone OS" or "desktop OS", just one OS and platform flexible enough to perform on a desktop with 20" screen or a phone with 2" screen. PDA software developers waste time having to develop for several different platforms. Linux may end up being this glue, if people can agree on a common platform.

My centro

[From Gabriel Castellanos, Sent from my Treo(r) smartphone] For the longest time I believed in having a cell phone and a PDA until last year when I got a Centro. Having a smartphone open a world of posibilities, now I could check my email everywhere, read my RSS feeds, etc. I don't need to find any more wifi hotspots! I am free!

Gadget Lust

[From Doug] I have loved mobile devices from before I had one. In a rare moment of release 1 purchasing, I bought a PalmPilot 1000 (which I still have), and it’s been gadget love ever since. Palm, Handspring, Tapwave Zodiac, now an iPhone—mobile gadget lust at its worst (or best).

DEAR MOGUL: WITHOUT YOU, I'D BE BORED

[From August Smith] I don't use my PDA phone to manage my day to day life. I just use it to text my friends all day long, check my email, surf the web, and read rss feeds. I also play Pocket Chess every day when I'm pooping. I'm so bad I can usually get beat twice in one "sitting". I was about to give up, until one day I actually beat the darn thing. But that was the only time. I'm still trying so hard to beat the computer that I even took out books from the library on how to improve my chess. Another thing I like to do is look at pictures, and play slide shows. Anyway, I'm glad I got my Sprint Mogul. More than anything, it keeps me entertained.

How I use my PDAs

[From Ken Gedgaud] I use my Garmin PDA when I travel with the family. It has a GPS, so it helps us get where we are going. I also put some of my sons music on it, which is good for bedtime. I use my Axim for most everything else, appointments and meetings, some documents, reading the Bible, a few games, note taking, some pictures, and listening to podcasts and music (4 Gig CF and 2 Gig SD).

Move over Windows, there goes Palm, here comes...

Th_iphone_homeWell, it's been a rollercoaster of a month so far. Firstly, there was the all too fleeting experience with the HTC Touch and Windows Mobile. Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset that it was short but it was short nonetheless.

Then back to the Palm. The lovely TX. The pda that can do everything that I want and do it well. A great little internet device with brilliant media streaming capabilities.

The thing about the TX is that it has been around for long enough to ensure a great catalogue of useful (and useless!) software and that is why mine travels with me all the time. Well, I say travels... I mean travelled.

Since ditching the HTC Touch, it's been great to get to know the TX again. But then along came the iPhone.

Well, it's only been a couple of days but what a device! First impressions are that it is an incredibly polished product (software and hardware) which is almost indescribably good. But rather than just see it as a finished thing, imagine what it will be like after a year of the SDK. Apple need to release it now - don't wait another moment.

It takes quite a lot of memory but you might remember that there were mp3 players before the iPod. The iPhone is so spectacularly good that it might just be the defining smartphone and internet device, the one before which no smartphones existed and the one after which all smartphones are defined. It really is that good.

I'll come back with a full feedback review shortly but I am fairly convinced that I won't be telling you that it has gone back in its box.

PocketBreeze 5.4.01 Public Beta build posted, Especially looking for Palm Treo users input

[From Clayton] Hi all As part of the work for the upcoming PocketBreeze update we've just finished a new build of PocketBreeze that also includes SMS support for Palm Treo devices. Up until this version Palm Treo (700/750) users were unable to view SMS messages within PocketBreeze since Palm Treo devices arrive with a separate built-in Threaded SMS messaging application instead of using the default WM Messaging application.

With the new upcoming PocketBreeze update to version 5.4.01 we've been working hard to include complete support for SMS messages on Treo devices too by integrating directly with the threaded SMS application that is built into the Palm Treo devices, so that Treo users will also be able to manage their SMS messages from the Today screen using PocketBreeze

This post is not *yet* the official version release of this new upcoming version, but instead there is a special beta version included with this thread that I would like to request our users help in testing this version and provide feedback whether things are working properly with this new version. My main interest with this new version is of course to know whether Palm Treo 700/750 users can view properly their SMS messages within PocketBreeze and use the different menu options with this new version for their SMS items directly within PocketBreeze.

Since we have only one Treo 750 device among our QA devices we were able to test the new threaded SMS support with one device only and therefore we decided to release this new beta version in the public forum and asking for help from our users to test the new version, with special help needed from Treo users that will be able to install this new version and provide input whether their SMS messages are now working properly.

So - if you are a Palm Treo user and will be able to install and test this new version this will be really great! Please be reminded that this is a beta build that was tested only on very little devices (it wasn't tested by our closed beta group yet) so please be sure to have a backup of your information before installing this new version

This version is still not the final version for release and the "Mark as Unread/Read" menu item for Treo SMS messages still won't work - we plan to have this ready for the final release too.

This new version includes a few additional great improvements with it already apart from the Threaded SMS support - but I'm not going to specify all the changes for now since we need to keep some of the fun for the final official version release.
