Nokia expected to gain market share

"Nokia Corp., the world's largest maker of mobile phones, is expected to post solid fourth-quarter results on Thursday as its market share tops 40% and it continues to strengthen its position in emerging countries such as India and China. "I would expect them to have a strong fourth quarter, as they usually do," said Carolina Milanesi, research director in the mobile and wireless device practice of tech consultancy Gartner. She noted that talk of a pending recession in the U.S. and its potential impact on consumer spending there would have little impact on Nokia , as the vendor derives only about 10% of its sales from the region. But some of the discussion following the results is still likely to focus on the impact of an economic downturn in the U.S. and Western Europe, particularly after Sony Ericsson's new President Hidaki Kumiyama last week said he believes conditions will be tough in 2008.
