[From Antoine RJ Wright (Charlotte, NC, USA at Mobile Ministry Magazine) ] I have to admit something, I did not think that I would still be using my Treo 680 right now. When I was looking at it about this time last year, I knew that it would be a solid addition, but not necessarly something that would stay. I knew that I wanted to go back to the large screen of my T5, but didn't want to give up the Palm OS, nor the versaitlity of the platform. That, and I just like it. It works plain and simple.
Well, here it is me into a new phone and I am looking for another, and finding not much of anything except compromises. WinMobile devices have great hardware, but the OS and user interface really make me cringe. Even a device like the HTC Touch 2 isn't enough to make me do more than a passing look. This isn't a bad thing, I just expected to see the Palm OS do more.
Symbian S60 (mostly Nokia) and UIQ (Motorola and Sony Ericsson) have some good things, but none have it put together. For example, the N95-3 is the US-spec version of the hot-selling, and acting, N95. It has everything except a touchscreen and a sanity-providing user interface (UI). On the other hand, Sony Ericsson has a very, very nice device in the W960i, but it doesn't have US 3G, and has some UI niggles of its own. Both of these are so close, yet so far from being a solid replacement for my Treo. Its disheartening in a way, but then again, shows that the Treo has a nice niche in my life
At this point I don't know what is next. I do know that I am not at all in need of a new phone. I change them much faster than I need to usually. Maybe sticking with the 680 (and soon to come Nokia N75) will provide me with a good bit of lessons on patience. And if anything, my Treo has been a hallmark of letting me know that I do need to be more patient. If not with getting information down, but in making sure that all of it gets done to best of my abilities.
