Palm to Windows Mobile Transitions: Other Software
Perhaps the largest concern that I faced in my transition from Palm to Windows Mobile was finding software in the new environment that would allow me to continue to maximize the use of my handheld. I am not making a comparison of the amount of software that is available on either platform. Instead what I present here is the software that I used in the Palm OS world and a similar or same product available on the Windows Mobile platform.
First of all, I will list products that were directly available on both platforms:
Core Pocket Meda Player, MobiTV, MobiPocket, PDANet, PrintBoy, DayNotez, Agendus, eReader Pro, Audible, Bejeweled, CardExport, eWallet, ListPro, Expense Plus, Dockware, Google Maps, BugMe, ScanR, TypePad and WorldMate Pro.
Software that I used on the Palm based Treo 700p that had an alternative equivalent available in the Windows Mobile 700wx (Palm title > WM equivalent): 2 Action Meeting > Minutes of Meeting; DirAst > Directory Assistance; Documents to Go > Pocket Office/Picsel PDF Viewer (in ROM); MMPlayer > TCPMP; Pocket Tunes > Pocket Music; QuickNews > NewsBreak; BackupMan > Sprite Backup or SPB Backup; PDAReach > Pocket Controller Pro; MyBible > Pocket Bible; SnapperMail > Flex Maill mLights > keylight; KeyCaps > MagiKB; UnDupe > WebISToolbox; Bubblet > Bubble Breaker (in ROM); Klondike > Solitaire (in ROM).
For some software, I could not find an equivalent in the WM world, but they did run well in the StyleTap Palm OS emulator. These include: DateWheel and Fraction Fit.
Other users will have different software configurations. This is only to provide an idea of the ability to transition between the two platforms.
The next installment will look at the ease of use and user interface between the two operating systems.
