Opera Mini on my Treo 680

Screenani2
I have never been able to get Opera Mini running on my 680, but I tried it again yesterday and it worked fine. I don't know if there is something new, or if I did something different, but I thought I'd let you know how to do it.

First, download Opera Mini. Opera Mini is a Java application and requires a Java download to run on your 680. The download is available for the Treo 650 and is not listed for the 680. I decided to download the 650 version anyway. You can get it here. Now sync the Opera Mini file to your Treo, and then sync over the two Java files. The Java files come in a zip format. Navigate to the WEME571JVM folder that you unzipped. In that folder, open the JVM folder.. In that folder, open the ARM4T folder. In that folder, select J9JavaVMMidp20.prc and JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc. These are the files to sync.

Once this is done you have to set the Java virtual machine preferences. Before I did this Opera Mini would crash whenever I started it. Go to the Preferences tab of your 680 and you will see an new Preference, under Other, for IBM Java VM. Open it and then click on the boxes for "Use Double Buffering" and "Use high resolution coordinates" in order to make them active. Then set the Memory Maximum to 8Mb. Finally, set the Maximum Java Thread Size to 32Kb. This completes the installation. I have not experimented with the 8Mb and 32Kb settings, so I don't know if others will work or will be more optimized.

That's it. Opera Mini is a wonderful browser and far in advance of the stock browser that comes with the Treo. Be sure to read the Help file in the browser so that you can learn the navigation shortcuts. Enjoy!
