There are a number of good e-mail clients available for Palm. Here's a quick rundown of the most popular choices - Snappermail, Chattermail, Versamail and Agendus Mail.
All share the following features...
- Microsoft Exchange compatibility
- Simple HTML display (Agendus Mail makes you switch to your web browser to view HTML...bad bad bad!!)
- Integration with built-in applications (send documents, photos, etc.)
They differ in the following areas:
Price
Chattermail - $40 plus $25 for the Exchange plug-in
Snappermail - $60 for the Enterprise version
Agendus Mail - $20 (included for free in the $60 Agendus Premier bundle)
Versamail - free (included with every Palm)
Checking for messages
Chattermail and Versamail both check for messages in the background, saving battery life and allowing you to work undisturbed. Snappermail inexorably wakes up your Palm, wrenching control away without hope of recovery, and has often caused me to lose work. I find this inexcusable, and will not use Snappermail again until this flaw is fixed. Agendus Mail also checks for messages in the foreground, however, it integrates fabulously with Agendus.
Snappermail and Chattermail allow you to backup your messages to an SD card, which prevents your messages from filling up the internal memory. SD card archiving would be a great feature to add in Versamail and Agendus Mail. Restoring messages is simple in Snapper, but a bit more work in Chattermail. Best to avoid the issue altogether and use Resco Backup.
I'm currently using Versamail because it's free, it's built into the system and has proven to be reliable. I also really like that it checks for messages discreetly in the background.
Testing out the demo versions is of course the best way to find out which e-mail client fits you needs.
