New Palm TX - Day One
Well it's been an exciting day! I've spend hours since receiving my new TX, downloading all the new versions of the software I regularly use, making sure they are all TX compatible and ready to go, all stored in a folder on my PC desktop called "TX"...!! After the initial 3 hour wait whilst it charged up I did some web surfing and basically read almost every forum thread on TX specific programs and Wi-Fi programs all in anticipation.
Then the moment came, 3 hours and 15 minutes (just to be on the safe side) later. I turned on my TX. The first thing to do was to navigate the possibly difficult upgrade from my T3. Due to incompatabilities between a lot of T3 software and the TX I decided a reinstall would keep things running smoothly. First of all I zipped up my old PalmOne folder and put it somewhere safe. Then I unistalled the Palm software and installed the new software from the supplied CD. After this I copied over my address, datebook, memos etc into the relevant folders of the new software and did a Hotsync. All was well and good. I then installed a program I find invaluable called "Uninstall". I installed this first so that it would record and monitor all the subsequent program installations and would be all prepped to remove them totally if needed. Next I installed my trusty Resco Backup, so I could backup between software installs in case of any problems. I did come across a few programs that sent my TX into a reset loop so was glad of the backups after a warm reset, to get me going again.
I've now installed pretty much all the programs I used on my T3 and some more besides, and still have over 65MB left of the 100mb available. These include: Agendus, Bdicty (with English Gold & English>Tagalog and Tagalog>English dictionaries), Card Export, Palmary Clock Wireless, Filez, Isilo (with numerous books, religious reference works etc on the SD card), Megaclock (soon to be unused since discovering Palmary Clock Wireless), Meteor (list maker, not the game), mo:Blog, NetChaser, NVBackup, Off Flush, Mobisystems Office Suite, Quickipedia, RescoBackup, Snapper Mail, TCPMP, Tealscript, TypePad, u*Blog, Unistall, Verichat, WiFi-Where, WiFile Pro, ZLauncher. Obviously the Wi-Fi connected programs are new to my TX as I didn't have Wi-Fi on my T3!
For the rest of the day I have been revelling in the freedom of the Wi-Fi. I have a wireless router at home to which is connected my PC, XBOX (runnning Xbox Media Center) and a home made Network Attached Storage with a 120GB HDD stuffed with MP3's, Films, TV Series etc. This is some of the things I've been enjoying:
Using Blazer and Avvenu www.avvenu.com/ I have been able to connect to my PC and access various files which has been very useful. I have also chatted to friends from various rooms of the house using Varichat (one of the rooms I was in whilst chatting is not a room you would tell said friend you where occupied in whislt chatting...). I also managed to access the files stored on my home NAS using Wifile Pro, although I have yet to find out how to stream MP3's and Videos so I can listen/watch them on my TX. I also have been able to control the playback of MP3's on my Xbox which is running XBMC, by a clever nerwork page script within Blazer. It suprised my wife when tracks suddenly started stopping, pausing, changing all whilst we were both upstairs.....! She is more and more impressed with my new powers! I can also access the setup/control pages of my router and NAS and also FTP into my Xbox to change setup files if needed. All good then!
TypePad Mobile has also been excellent and will be used over and over agian by myself and other associate writers I am sure. I did follow the guides as to how to use mo:Blog and u*Blog with Palm Addicts but had problems with both, but TypePad Mobile is a breeze to setup and use.
Well that's pretty much been the shape of things today, apart from a couple of hours at work and a few hours housecleaning in leu of my sister and her new boyfriend coming to stay for the Bank Holiday we are about to enjoy in England. Although Palmary Clock Wireless helpfully tells me the weather is going to suck...so need to make plans on which activities to engage in. ("Playing with TX", I think....may not impress sister and new boyfriend. "Darn").
Next on my list of TX related things to do is:
Install some of my fave games.
Install some new games!
Set up all my Agendus catagories that were lost in the upgrade (I now have 100's of Unfiled Contacts, Appointments and Tasks!).
Watch this space for more interesting and hopefully insightful info on the ways and wherefores of my TX upgrade!
