Earthcomber Review

Earthcomber. The name conjures up a gigantic comb of planetary proportions... I was disappointed to find that apparently the comb is only big enough for Pluto, which is no longer a planet). Corny astronomical humor aside... this program does not disappoint, rather I was blown away.
The Earthcomber website says that its as easy as 4 steps to get you going. And it is that easy!
Step #1- Sign Up and Sign In
Step #2- Choose what favorites to look for (I didn't do this, but Earthcomber provides you with a default set of Look Lists to get you started)
Step #3- Pick your maps. Any county in the United States is downloadable... seriously. Fremont County (where I live, is even in there, and the entire county holds less people than 40,000). I am very impressed with their maps, which are mostly accurate (the disparities are forgiven as we are very remote).
Finally, Step #4- Download to your handheld device of choice (if you want to check if your device is supported, click here to see supported devices). This step was fairly easy. I must say that the entire process is fairly short, and given 10 minutes of your time, you're ready to go comb the earth...
While I haven't used this software in any larger metropolis type areas, I was impressed by how accurate it was for the two counties I tested it in. I also like that you can set a new spot by clicking on the pushpin button and fill in the information... like where your house is! Yea, I'm a nerd like that.
Last week, the map functions really came in handy, as I searched for our lost dog. I've lived here a year, but I don't really know the street names all that well in our neighborhood. I was able to mark (with the pushpin) each street that I'd gone down, and zoom out to widen the search as time went by. I'm impressed by the accuracy of the program, and jthe amazing thing is that you get all this for free!
Ok, ok... you're wanting to know pros and cons...
Pros
- Maps for every county in the United States
- Accuracy in Look Lists
- Pushpins to mark your spots
- Favorites to share with others, and
- It's FREE!
Cons
- Sometimes slow to draw maps
- Maps can take large amounts of space (make sure you save to your SD card!)
- Not an actual comb... just kidding!
- I give Earthcomber **** (4 stars, out of 4) Because since its free, the Cons don't matter as much.
Why don't you go out and give Earthcomber a try... Who knows, maybe you'll find something new in your town/city!
