It's true! The Treo 650 is going to be migrated out of Sprint's smartphone offerings by the end of this Summer.
I just got off the phone with Sprint's Public Relations firm, and they confirmed that Sprint will sell off their remaining stock of the 650. My best guess is that with 2 more Treos coming out by year's end, the 650 would end up being redundant in terms of pricing and performance. Although I lament its departure, this is a good sign from Palm management. Poor supply-chain management has been a major cause for financial stress over the years...amplified by a line up of devices that effectively competed amongst themselves.
One note of urgency to prospective buyers...speculators bought out the bulk of the Treo 600 when it was discontinued, and sold them for the past year on eBay, at a big profit. I know, because I was looking at getting one for my son, and couldn't believe the prices that they were actually selling for...$250 - $300 for an antiquated device was the common final bid. Its not much of a guess that the speculators will be snapping up Sprint's inventory, and gouging away on eBay again. Imagine what they will be selling a still-relevant device like the Treo 650 for? Ouch!
Sprint PR checked on the "$99 special" that has been mentioned in our Forum and at TreoCentral. While unaware of it, they did not dispute that it might be available. For those who have been waiting for their first Treo, or to move up from the 600...this is your moment in the sun!
