Well, gee, thanks! I think this may be the least helpful error message ever.
This came about when I was trying to install Act Link for Palm, just after I chose the database.
I tried uninstalling/reinstalling ACT Link for Palm, to no avail.
Fortunately I discovered that ACT has a live chat option and I found someone who knew exactly what the problem was and directed me to ACT tech support number 18239: Empty Warning Message with Yellow Triangle and OK Button When Installing ACT! Link 2006 for Palm OS
Solution? Uninstall Microsoft .Net 2.0.
Of course! Why didn’t I think of that?!?!
Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger to ACT’s tech support. On the one hand, a wag of the finger for being WAY too complicated to find how to get into their online chat. ACT! by Sage Online Support Center says
How can I verify that I am entitled to use Live Chat Assistance?
Inside the Knowledge Center / Live Chat Assistance you will see a tab option for "Overview". Click the "Overview" tab and then click on the link for "Live Assistance". You will be able to begin a chat session if you are within our operating hours and you are entitled to use chat.
That’s absurd. There ought to be a direct link to “Live Chat”. If they want to make you login to use it, fine, but don’t make it difficult to find it in the first place. Big bad poor web design, big bad poor user interface, big bad way to treat your customers.
However, once I logged in and found the right place, I was immediately connected to someone who instantly identified the problem. They were quick and efficient.
One last wag of the finger, however, due to the instructions to find the Knowledge Base article. First I had to go to go to the Search page (which I can’t link to because you have to login) and then change “Product” to “ACT 2006” and then type in “18239”
That ought to be available as something like http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?product=act&article=18239
No one ought to have to login simply to see a tech support article. Microsoft has recently started requiring Passport logins to read support articles as well. What does that benefit me, the customer?
That said, the most important thing is that the chat solved by issue, which I now pass on to you, loyal reader.
