700p Marketing Speak has been bugging me all day

[Associate Writer Icon] Ok, this has been bugging me all day. Michelle White said:

In this product, customers will benefit from the product’s DUN (dial-up networking) capabilities. Customers can use the Treo as a modem to connect to their computer and, since the Treo 700p uses a high-speed EvDO radio, users won’t have to rely on finding a fee-based Wi-Fi hot spot to be able to access the web at broadband-like speeds. DUN will be available with a monthly service charge from the carrier, and could be less expensive than Wi-Fi service. (see source)

Problems with this:

1) I can already use my Treo650 as a DUN... it's not EvDO speeds. Is Palm trying to say that they (or, more correctly, Sprint and Verizon) are going to kill the BT DUN we already have?

2) “users won’t have to rely on finding a fee-based Wi-Fi hot spot” Sure... but what this doesn’t say is “Users won’t be able to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi hot spots all over the place including many airports... oh, and some entire cities in the USA. Not to mention workplaces and homes.”

3) “could be less expensive than Wi-Fi service.”.... “Could be”.... “Could be” is the marketer’s dream phrase, a close cousin to “may”... In Marketing Double Talk “may” can be followed by just about anything. “A diet of cookies may help you lose weight” especially if there’s a little fine print at the bottom which says things like “Results not typical.”

So far the 700p seems to be huge disappointment.

Am I crazy? Let me know in the forum
