Lifehacker.com: How GTD made my Treo obsolete
Lifehacker.com's Associate Editor D. Keith Robinson posted an editorial today talking about how the popular Getting Things Done (tm) system developed by David Allen has made his Treo obsolete.
Excerpt:
"I thought that having access to a calendar, contacts, e-mail, the Web and the rest at all times would help me be more productive, more organized and in turn, do a better job. It seemed that for awhile that was the case, but I began to slip. Still, with the phone I was better than without. That was before I discovered David Allen’s Getting Things Done. Now I own a glorified cameraphone.
... as I became more organized [via the GTD system] I found that all the great features my phone had were becoming a bit of a burden. Having those contacts and access to my e-mail, for example, were eating into my fun time... Things like the access to e-mail, my contacts and such aren’t needed at all times any more. I take care of things during my work time.
That doesn’t mean that having access isn’t handy at times. It’s just not something I need to do anymore. I’m organized to the point now that something like a Treo is overkill."
Ouch. Gotta admit it, it pains me to hear such comments about the beloved Treo. But hey, if a different organization system works well for him, to the point where the functions of the Treo 650 became overkill, then that's great. For me, I simply am not as capable at staying organized without my trusty Treo by my side -- I use a mix of my Treo and some GTD principles/strategies, including having my own personal tiddlywiki gtd plus (more info here). Plus, for me, my Treo is often included into my fun time (with playing games, watchin movies on tcpmp, taking candid shots, calling friends, etc). I guess not everyone's cut out to be a Palm Addict!
Sidenote: I really like Lifehacker.com's slogan/philosophy: "Don't live to geek; geek to live." I think many Palm Addicts can relate to that sentiment, and once in a while would do well to remind ourselves of it (myself included)!
