Comment on:Lifehacker.com: How GTD made my Treo obsolete
"Wayne L., Seattle, WA, USA" quote "Lifehacker.com's Associate Editor D. Keith Robinson posted an editorial today" and I cannot resist to write about it. So I apologize for the repetition... I have been involved with GTD and the principles in the book and the seminar since November 2003. I have been using a Palm since 1997. When I start to get really organized in GTD I start to have the same feelings as Mr. Robinson, my TT (My palm at the time)was not that useful anymore, I even though that my days as Palm Addict where over... After stop trying to do certain things in the Palm, (like email and working on the web) I discover that I was wrong, they are just things that are better in the PC that’s all. GTD divide the process of work in 5 Stages, Collect, Process, Organize, Review and Do.
IMHO, the Palm do great 2/5, Collect and Do. In my past experience when I try to Process, Organize and Review without success, I lost track of the big picture in that way and therefore I stop doing it long time ago.
I keep my Inbox to ZERO (0) so I do not read emails in my PDA because then I need to read them again, when I read emails I read and process my emails, if I cannot process them I do not read them and for me the reality is I cannot process them in the Palm, so that only happen in the PC.
The thing with the palm it is understand their limitations and get the best out of the Palm as Possible. (yes I know some Palmaddicts believe they are no limitations, but for me there are some… that do not make me less addict or less palm maniac). I have stated here that I use my palm a lot, and I do, but I do not try to Process, Organize and Review in the Palm, I do it faster in the PC, the objective is get the best out of the Tool and move on. For example if I want to look for a Word in the Dictionary, my palm wins, it is faster than walk to the book, open the book, look the word. But for Process email, sorry the PC wins, I only read my emails once, after that they are projects or actions nothing else.
I understand that I am "too organized" (My boss comment, I asked in writing for future reference) but the reality is GTD has allow me to do more things in less time and in a better way, but more importantly has teach me to look for the best tool possible to do the Job. When I do Marketing ads for our Products, I do not use the Palm, I use the PC, when I am in the road and need to take a note, I do not take the PC out of the Bag, I use the Palm...
Every tool in their right place and a right place for every tool...
Just my humble opinion...
