Palm CEO and President, Ed Colligan took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to PalmAddict and we thought we would ask him 22 of Jan's great questions. So Ladies and Gentlemen grab a coffee, sit back and read what Ed had to say to PalmAddict and a BIG thank you to Ed Colligan for taking the time to talk to PalmAddict and we're very pleased that he is a PalmAddict fan. Plus a big thank you to Jan, our Deputy Editor for coming up with the great questions. Make sure you read Jan's excellent Palm Adict Profile series, you'll fin the links in the right column.
1. Name?
Edward Thomas Colligan. Most people know me as Ed. My oldest friends know me as Eddy.
2. Occupation?
President and CEO of Palm, Inc.
3. Where do you live?
I spend about 60% of my time in San Jose, CA in a small bedroom community called Willow Glen. I also am very lucky to have a beautiful home on the water in Santa Cruz, CA. I spend as much time as possible there. It’s great being able to live the fast paced life of Silicon Valley, and then drive over the hill and live the laid back life in Santa Cruz.
4. How long have you been checking in / reading Palm Addict?
On and off since the beginning (1999). I check in to keep a pulse on the community and to see the latest news.
5. What do you like best about the Palm Addict community?
Their passion and dedication to the power of mobile computing.
6. How many PDA's do you own?
An infinite number. It’s a little unfair because I get to try every one of them. I really carry a Treo of every flavor (mostly so I can test every carrier configuration and give feedback), and a LifeDrive as my camera companion.
7. Favorite PDA?
LifeDrive.
8. What makes it your favorite?
It has such a world of possibilities that the developer community and Palm are just beginning to support. I also love the camera companion functionality. It’s so much easier when you’re on the road to download your files to a LifeDrive rather than carrying around a laptop.
9. What about PocketPC devices?
I try them to understand the competitive environment, but I don’t use them on a regular basis.
10. What other hobbies/passions do you have?
I love to go body boarding (surfing) with my boys. I travel often to Oregon to see football games at my Alma Mater. I love playing practically any sport, but especially Volleyball, American Football and Basketball when I get the chance. I also like my down time just hanging out on the deck in the sun and reading a good book.
11. Favorite food?
I love all foods, but if I had to chose it would be great Mexican, Indian or Japanese food.
12. Favorite dessert?
Molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream!
13. Favorite season?
Probably the Fall. Nothing like a beautiful, warm late Autumn evening at the beach or in the mountains.
14. Are you a "morning" or an "evening" person?
Definitely an evening person.
15. Do you have any pets?
Two great dogs. One is a Bernese Mountain Dog who is just beautiful and really sweet and fun. And the other is a recent addition King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who looks just like the big dog. They are a pretty amazing pair. The little one still thinks he is going to be big someday.
16. Favorite places to go?
The beautiful outdoors anywhere.
17. Favorite movies?
Too many to name, but I have a signed Caddyshack poster in my office and a dancing puppet gopher that sings “I’m Alright” if that’s any clue.
18. Favorite book?
Anything by Bill Bryson or David McCullough
19. Favorite band?
U2 without a doubt.
20. Favorite song?
My iPod has 3000 songs that I like.
21. What makes you smile?
A lot of things, but if I had to pick one – it’s my boys when they do or say something silly.
22. If you could pick any 3 people (real ones) to have dinner with…alive or dead…who would they be, and why?
John Lennon – He had such a great sense of self, and a great message for society.
Octavian/Augustus – I’m fascinated with Roman culture, and he did some amazing things to build that empire.
John Wooden, UCLA Basketball coach of the 60’s – 70’s – He was an incredible winner by developing great individuals and building them into great teams.
