[From Stephen Trew] Apple is catching up with Nokia to be the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer. It will not be long before numbers of smartphones dwarf regular feature phones.

Using my iPhone especially Siri.
How have I used my iPhone 4S today, mostly using Siri. I instruct Siri to open Tweetbot first thing, I reply to messages. Siri then opens emails, again just by saying a command. Again this is for jailbroken iPhones. I dictate a couple of emails and that saves me time. I also dictated some emails for PalmAddict. I also used Siri to check the sun set time for where I am, and the weather for tomorrow and the rest of the week. So as you can see I'm getting a lot of great use of my iPhone especially Siri, which in my opinion is one of the best iPhone features.

I had a great Wednesday island hopping, looking for dolphins and in return seeing all sorts of wildlife including seals. The weather has been wonderful, crisp but with blue skies, I've been blessed. Anyway the picture above was taken on my iPhone 4S and as always it's captures the sunset beautifully. I hope you have a great Thursday.
[From Stephen Trew] The iPad3 rumour mill has sparked to life again. "BGR has obtained a number of images said to be taken of output from iBoot, Apple's iDevice bootloader, running in debug mode on an iPad 3 — and in debug mode, you're able to see some detail on the hardware running underneath. Notably, the processor is identified as model number S5L8945X, which is new — it's apparently a quad-core Apple A6, which is exactly what everyone is expecting."
[From Stephen Trew] If you have the money this could be a sure bet. "As expected, Facebook just filed its initial public offering paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission, marking the beginning of its process to become a publicly traded company. It'll trade under the stock symbol "FB" (although it didn't specify on what exchange) and says that it seeks to raise some $5 billion in the process."
[From Hans] When I first looked at this I thought it looked similar to the iPhone. "The user interface looks rather simple, right in line with what we’ve seen of BlackBerry 10 thus far, while the hardware is what they say it is – “elegant, understated, precise, solid, and slim.” The user interface is a “dramatic shift” from what we’ve seen in BlackBerry so far, and the image notes that the device will be rich in both power and efficiency. This device is said to be very possibly running a Texas Instruments OMAP5 or a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC under the hood, and that it’ll be out this year – maybe."
[From Stephen Trew] More good news for Microsoft. Android's problem is it has fragmented. Microsoft could develop a quality OS, demand quality hardware at a competitive price and have a runner. "Warren East speaking during Tuesday's earnings conference call. — In the wake of a solid earnings report, ARM's CEO Warren East said Microsoft may have some potential advantages over Android in the tablet market."
[From Stephen Trew] Congratulations Crunchies Winners! Dropbox Is The Best Overall Startup, "The world owes a thank you to Jack Dorsey, the “Founder Of The Year” and leader of Twitter, winner of “Biggest Social Impact”. His poise and dedication helped keep the microblogging service online so it could aid revolutions. And a big congrats to Dropbox on its win for “Best Overall Startup”. The company’s young founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi (from right to left below) demonstrated the power of the freemium model, and had the guts to turn down a 9 figure acquisition bid."
[From Stephen Trew] If Apple are shopping for components now this means a TV may be likely in 2013, not 2012. "Apple has contacted at least one major Asian supplier about purchasing television display components, checks by one analyst have revealed."

We're blessed with some fantastic views and this is a picture of one of the dramatic cliffs on one of the islands were I am staying this week. As you can see the cliff edge is dramatic but is captured beautifully using my iPhone 4 S.

Good morning PalmAddict readers, today is a beautiful day and the above photograph was taken a few minutes ago using my iPhone and it shows the islands that lay ahead of me today. I'm writing this editorial on a boat, we are island navigating, looking out for seals and on the search for dolphins. We've already seen some seals and we are told that it is likely we will spot dolphins too. Although it's bitterly cold, the sun is out and it's a beautiful day. So looking forward to seeing the dolphins and I hope that you have a great Wednesday . As always I'm dictating this into my iPhone.
[From Stephen Trew] Some thoughts on Amazon's sales figures. Low profit high volume, that is the strategy. " Summary: Amazon's fourth quarter sales and outlook fall short of expectations. Kindle sales surge. — Amazon's fourth quarter sales missed projections, but earnings were ahead. The big wild card was Kindle device sales, which tripled over the holidays."
[From Stephen Trew] Interesting to hear a little of what Nokia's design guru has to say. "Outside of Stephen Elop himself, Marko Ahtisaari may very well be Nokia's most important employee: as the head of design, he's ultimately responsible for creating hardware and software that's compelling enough to draw people back to a brand that's on the ropes. We've sat down with him ourselves, and we've learned that he's never afraid to say what's on his mind — he has strong opinions about the importance of simplicity and recognizable design, and he doesn't seem interested in compromising those principles as he's moved from working on an in-house project "
[From Arnold Moore] A while back, I bought a Nokia N8 because of its camera to replace a dying iPhone 3GS. I discovered that more than take pictures, I listen to music. Unfortunately, I am locked into iTunes which doesn't play nice with Nokia. So, I'm back with a jail broken 3GS. Maybe I can convince my boss to get me a 4S? Keep up the good work Sammy. Love the site.
[From James Moat Minnesota] Hi Sammy, Quick email to tell you about my mobile use: Instapaper is a GREAT way to catch up on web reading. Sometimes I’ll surf during the day, but not have time to read full articles. A quick right-click in Firefox and the Instapaper extension delivers the article to my Instapaper account which syncs easily to my iPad. My evening reading is then set.
[From Kath Donaldson] Hi Sammy, I've been using my iPhone recently to track my Peak Flow results using the very useful Asthma MD App - it helps me track it on a daily basis and provides some useful graphs
[From Stephen Trew] For many years now I've recieved Which magazine. I rarely buy an gadget unless it is a recommended best buy. They also have a great web page that I often access from my phone. I was buying tyres the other day so I looked them up in the shop and asked if they had any of the recommendations. They did and. I saved about £20 on a quality product.
[From Chris Selvage-Indiana, USA] I use the combination of GasBuddy & Gas Cubby to keep my car maintained at the most reasonable cost. I keep track of the lowest prices in town with GasBuddy and I like the fuel and maintenance tracking feature of Gas Cubby. A great pair of apps for me.
[From Alan Winn] I've been using Swype for some time and I like it. I have a HTC Hero and it runs perfectly well on it. I like my Hero and it the battery lets it down, I find I need to charge it twice a day. Apart from that it serves me well and I hope to see ICS rooted on it at some stage in the future.
Let's do a quick throwaway, SH is finished with his unlocked 16GB Samsung Galaxy II , it's a fine handheld and Iplayed with it last week. It's in perfect condition and it comes with a screen-protector. So if you want it then the first person to send me a email telling me how you have been using your mobile device whether it be for business or pleasure. [No plea's to why you need or what you'd do with it - I want to hear about how you've used your device] Please give your user thought a title, this is essential. The first person to send me a user thought can have the Galaxy II. Put MIDWEEK in your subject line and email it to me at sammymcloughlin@gmail.com
[From Hans] I love these Siri tweaks and this one looks like it's going to be exciting. "MySiri includes the ability to execute Activator actions using your voice, create your own conversations, enable or disable toggles, perform commands like respring, restart, reboot, and create your own custom background. The nice thing about MySiri is that virtually every aspect is customizable in a sense that you can create your own predefined voice commands. Of course the tweak is still in development, and I wasn’t personally able to have success with all facets. The good news is that by the time it is released, all aspects should be working seamlessly."

Happy Tuesday my PalmAddict friends, I hope that you are well. As you can see I'm still on the island. It's remote to say the least, as I mentioned there is no broadband. I'm lucky to get a signal do I'm using a weak phone signal. Now with that in mind there is still a lot I can do with my iPhone, I am still able to make calls, emails can be downloaded and I can still check the news using Twitter. I can also update my location, what I'm doing and upload photographs of the beautiful scenery and if you wish to see them and follow my whereabouts this week then hit me up at @sammymcloughlin , so as you can see there is a lot of things I'm able to achieve. One of the great beauties of using the iPhone 4s is the camera. It takes wonderful pictures. I remember the first time I ever used a camera on my mobile device, I believe it was the UX50, it was a Palm powered handheld and it had a keyboard and I loved using it. It opened my eyes to taking photographs on my mobile device. I remember there was a website, life thru a UX50 and it introduced me to moblogging through my device and being able to chronicise my life through photographs taken on my mobile device, I guess it was a forerunner to twitter but it really ignited my enthusiasm to taking photographs using my handheld, something which I still live doing today as my regular readers and twitter followers will have noticed. Anyway the above picture is my beach, deserted and beautiful today, yes I am being blessed with wonderful weather. Anyway my friends, I hope that you are having a great Tuesday. More thoughts in the week and as always my iPhone has transcribed this editorial using the dictate feature.
[From Stephen Trew] The growth in tablets means they will have to be counted a PCs soon. "Best quarter in Apple's history? Check. Retaking the smartphone crown from Samsung? Check. How about becoming the world's largest PC manufacturer? If you're Canalys and you factor iPads into the equation, then yes, another check. Per the research firm, "client PCs" (which include "desktops, netbooks, notebooks and tabs") grew by 16 percent to hit 120 million in Q4, from which Apple's 20 million units (15 million iPads + 5 million Macs) grabbed the leading 17 percent share. Cupertino's followed by HP, Lenovo, Dell and Acer in that order -- all of whom, save for Lenovo, saw their piece of the PC pie shrink. "
[From Stephen Trew] This shows how much room for expansion there still is. Apple is poised for continued monster growth. "Worldwide tablet sales will quintuple over the next five years. This according to NPD DisplaySearch, which sees sales of tablets surging from 72.7 million in 2011 to 383.3 million in 2017. A remarkable spike, if it proves true — even more so because of what’s driving it: Emerging markets, which are expected to generate up to 46 percent of worldwide shipments by 2017."
[From Stephen Trew] As I said before - Apple will be big in China this year. " Earlier this month, we reported that China Telecom earned the necessary approvals to launch the iPhone 4S on China's third-largest carrier. Today, the China Telecom subsidiary Beijing Telecom issued a press release "
[From Stephen Trew] Fascinating article on how cheap phones are more profitable than smartphones at the moment. Buying a smartphone at the moment means you are getting your money's worth at least. "For many handset vendors, the world has turned upside down. Nokia's $40 feature phones are vastly more profitable than Sony Ericsson's $200 Android models. This is not how the smartphone revolution was supposed to turn out."
[From Stephen Trew] For readers outside the UK, Tesco is one of the most successful UK supermarkets. They have undergone massive expansion internationally and this is why Apple offered him this job. "Apple announced today that it has appointed John Browett, former Dixons CEO, as Senior Vice President of its retail operations, responsible for the company's retail efforts worldwide. Browett, who previously held the position of Tesco.com CEO prior to his Dixons role, will report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook who is "thrilled" to have Browett bring "his incredible retail experience to Apple." "
[From Stephen Trew] Apple has underestimated the demand in China! Expect to see over 100 million iPhones sold this year, perhaps 25 to 30 million in China. "Apple may have underestimated Chinese demand for its new iPhone 4S once, but it has no plans to do so a second time. Remarking on sales of the 4S in Greater China, during the company’s recent first-quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said demand for the device there has been staggering. “We felt we were betting bold, as I think many of you would have thought if you would have known what we were doing,” Cook said of the 4S rollout plan for the country. “But as it turns out, we didn’t bet high enough.”"
[From Stephen Trew] I'll be upgrading. Let's see if it's faster and better. "It's been nine months since Mozilla announced that Firefox would be moving to a rapid release cycle, and since then the browser has moved from version 4 to 10. According to the beta changelog, the latest release brings the kind of life-changing features you'd expect from a six-week update cycle, with some extension management improvements, a forward button that hides itself until it has a function, the inclusion of APIs for full-screen web apps, and anti-aliasing for WebGL. "
[From Stephen Trew] Strong showing for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac in this new report from Forrester.
[From Stephen Trew] It looks like the brain drain at WebOS continues. This is not a good sign for the future of the OS. "The Verge has learned that HP's Brian Hernacki, who most recently has served as chief architect for webOS, has left the company. Though he'd never been a public face of the product the same way big names like Jon Rubinstein or Matias Duarte had been, Hernacki's departure seems to leave another relatively high-profile talent hole in the ranks at a critical time when HP hopes to make the transition to Open webOS over the coming months."
[From Hans] Apple have introduced a lottery service for those that want a iPhone in China. "Apple, in an apparent attempt to deter scalpers, has introduced a new lottery system for customers in Hong Kong who want one of its smartphones. A new page on Apple's Hong Kong store Web site requires users to submit their personal information, including a government-issued ID number, to reserve an iPhone. Apple began selling the iPhone 4S in Hong Kong this past November. The new lottery system allows users to request a device during a three-hour time period each day, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Those who are awarded a reservation will be notified via email before 9 p.m., and told what time they should come pick up the phone, Apple said."
[From Hans] Be careful with custom Android ROMs, you may do more harm than good. "I purchased a GSM Galaxy Nexus back in December and quickly decided it was the best Android smartphone I have ever owned. A couple weeks after owning it I decided to root it and install custom ROMs so I could use Google Wallet and optimize the phone for my particular needs. Over the past month I went back to using Windows Phone as my primary mainly because the Galaxy Nexus just wasn’t able to perform reliably as a mobile phone with call not going through or dropping constantly. It turns out that it was MY fault for this and the Galaxy Nexus is back in my pocket."
[From Hans] Find my iPhone came in handy when finding a stolen iPhone. "A New York City cop put his tech skills to quick use last week, tracking down a stolen iPhone and catching its thief red-handed. At about 7 p.m. Jan. 26, a man pulled a gun on a woman standing outside Tuci Italia, a handbag store on Avenue of the Americas near West 57th Street, the New York Times reported. The woman was a Tuci Italia cashier on a break standing near the entrance to the store, and the mugger made off with her iPhone. Normally, the miscreant would have melted into the evening rush-hour crowd, but Officer Robert Garland's on-his-feet decision to use his own iPhone led to the crook's swift apprehension. Garland entered the woman's Apple ID into the "Find My iPhone" app, which used GPS to pinpoint location of the phone. It was near Eighth Avenue and 51st Street, traveling south."
Samsung have apparently launched the Galaxy S Advance, Tracy and Matt Blog report. "Samsung Electronics today announces the latest addition to its Android powered Galaxy portfolio, the Galaxy S Advance, which features a sleek curved design with dual-core performance. The Galaxy S Advance strikes the perfect balance of style and performance. Powered by a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor and HSPA 14.4 Mbps connectivity, the Galaxy S Advance delivers great versatility and a highly responsive interface for easy multitasking - allowing smoother screen transitions, faster image processing, plus enhanced Web download and browsing."
May at PalmDiscovery offers us some free mp3's to download and take advantage of. "It’s another Monday and that means, it’s MP3 Monday and this week’s selection has a love related theme to them! Here are SEVEN FREE DRM-FREE MP3 music files for download, one for each day of the week, so that you’ll come back next Monday for another batch of seven . Hope you like it and check back next week!"
[From Hans] Thanks again to Hans and Android Central has a good comparison editorial comparing the camera's of both the Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Samsung Galaxy S II. "The cameras in our Android phones have certainly gotten better than most would have expected. The old standard of "it's a cell phone camera, it'll never be as good as a cheap point-and-shoot" is no longer valid. The hardware is getting better, and the software is improving right alongside it, making the experience of using your phone as a camera enjoyable, and in the right hands, almost professional. The big news in Android last year on the camera front was the Samsung Galaxy S II's 8-megapixel rear shooter, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus' "zero shutter lag" camera. We decided that these two had to go head to head. Hit the break to check it out."
[From Hans] RedSn0w jailbreak has been updated today. "This fix, which was developed by PlanetBeing and integrated into RedSn0w, overcomes the jailbreak detection by iBooks that would cause some images to not display properly, if at all… "

This was the few I had earlier today. These are the Snowdonia mountains in Wales, UK. It's a very snowy scene captured nicely using my iPhone 4S. The views were amazing today and I'm very honoured to see such wonderful views even though the driving, as you can imagine, to be challengingly :-). I also had my iphone connected info mu music system so I'm able to listen to music stored on my device. Isn't it wonderful that we are able to take advantage and view some wonderful scenery and today was one example of this. I hope that you have had as great a Monday as I have.
