So Lindsey will draw the winner of the iBook on Tuesday May 6th [Winner - Kyle Breen - Purcell] when she returns back to work, in the meantime I am giving away my MacBook Air, about 3 month's or so old and in perfect condition, and the reason being is that I am happier with my MacBook Pro and so as opposed to me selling it on ebay it forms a throwaway I will end at any time.

Put APRIL29 in the subject line and IMPORTANTLY give it a title, or it will not be entered. Add your town/ country location so we can post your country. I do not have a PalmOS device, so when I read about many wonderful software and games for PalmOS on PalmAddicts, I feel rather envious and slightly left-out. Buying a PalmOS device for now is not an option, however, because currently I am in a rather troublesome financial situation, and would like to focus my attention more on my family needs rather than on my own. Still I am interested about those PalmOS software and games. What to do then? Well, maybe I can emulate PalmOS on my Pocket PC, or on my dekstop/laptop. So yesterday I did a bit of googling, and on Wikipedia I found a few interesting links:
POSE (PalmOS Emulator)
PalmOS Simulator
Xcopilot
StyleTap Well, StyleTap is not free. It is a shareware. A 14-day trial version is available on its website. It looks interesting.
I have not tried any of the above software, but I think I will try them on the weekends if I can find some time. My priority over the weekends however is still on hard resetting my O2 Xda IIi PDA Phone first.
(Note that the picture is taken from Wikipedia)
Disclaimer as usual: I am not in any way affiliated with any of the websites linked above.
I installed a certain add-on extension to my Firefox browser at work, yesterday late afternoon. Apparently it did not work well (probably because of version incompatibility or something), so the next time I opened Firefox I lost all my bookmarks and settings. That was quite annoying. I had to leave office soon afterwards, so I could not do any fixing until this morning. Well, luckily I keep regular backups of Firefox profile directory in the SD Card of my O2 Xda IIi PDA Phone, and the latest one is just one day old so I do not lose much, aside from a few new bookmarks I had made yesterday morning. I deliberately keep the Firefox profile backup in the SD Card so that whenever I go I have the backup with me. So this morning it was just a matter of copying the backup from my mobile device to overwrite the current Firefox profile directory, and voila, everything goes back to normal :-)
Winner will be chosen very soon for the ASUS Eee PC 701 which is now officially closed drawing more user thoughts than at anytime that I remember. I try to post many but like to add variety so not all thoughts are published but all providing they have followed the guidelines are entered.
Now with that in mind I am now ready to name the date when the MacBook Air throwaway ends and it ends this forthcoming Sunday at Midnight US PT. So you only have a couple of days to get the last of your user thoughts into me. Writers if you wish to be entered then please let me know how many of your posts have been uploaded to the front page and give me this information on Monday only please. All the guidelines are in this post, so please hurry!
  [From Tom Staggs
Goodlettsville, Tennessee
USA] Hi Sammy
Thanks for Palmaddict. I read it multiple times a day. I have used the info from it to make my Treo 650 the way I want it.
The other day my wife and I were at the Baltimore Airport waiting our two or so hours until the flight. She wanted to check her
email but did not want to pay the 10 dollars they wanted to use the Airport Wi-Fi.
I pulled out my Treo 650 and we checked to make sure the flight was on time. She did her email. I answered my email, checked the weather at our destination. Then while she
worked on her computer on things she was carrying with her, I checked ESPN MLB, "Wired", Fox News, Auto Blog and then checked out the local restaurants
around the destination hotel with Goog-411. I learned about Goog-411 from an article in Palmaddict.
So, what would have been a wasted 2 hours became very productive with my Palm Treo 650. Sure glad I have it.
[From James (Riverside, California)] I was cleaning out the garage a few weeks ago and wanted to drop off some old clothes at the local Salvation Army location. Unfortunately, the one place I knew about was closed and I had no idea where any other drop-off locations were. My computer was upstairs where my wife and daughter were napping, so I didn't want to wake them up. Fortunately, I had my trusty Palm TX with me, so I got on our wi-fi network and was able to look up the Salvation Army's website online. One more task taken care of--most importantly, without waking up my wife...
Seems like a fun little freeware game to tempt you it's called Nike Shade Running v1.0. "The Nike twins are back for another great adventure, this time, it's a game called Shade Running. Run down the street, avoiding objects and staying out of the sun.
And we've also included 30 more crazy game ideas to keep you busy this summer."
  [From Antonio
Brooklyn, NY] When I first contemplated moving from Palm to the iPhone, I really had to think things over. What was I going to loose by changing platforms? What would I gain? The questions were not hard to answer. I just had to think whether or not I could live with those answers.
So, first, I'd be moving over to a totally new platform and saying goodbye to the Palm OS which I had been using since the Palm first came out (I had the very first Palm Pilot from US Robotics!). I even still had notes that had be carried over from that first Palm. So, I'd be saying goodbye to a system that I'd been using for nearly a decade. What would I be gaining? Well, total integration with the OS of my choice (Mac) was something that I'd welcome. You see, I've always seemed to have some issue with my Palm syncing to my Mac. Somewhere along the line something would go wrong and contacts would get deleted or I'd get duplicate calendars or whatnot. Fifty percent of the time things would not work as they should. Now I don't blame Palm for that (although I do blame them for not keeping their Mac desktop software up to date) as my Mac system was always a little wonky since I liked to mess with it a lot. But, I figured, switching to an iPhone would probably not make syncing my data any worse. In fact, it could only get better. That would be a huge time saving issue for me.
Secondly, I'd be giving up all sorts of third party applications that I purchased for my Palm. Pocket Quicken, Bejeweled 2, mSafe, Backup Man, and about a dozen others. When I started to look closely at those apps, it made me think: Well, even though I love Pocket Quicken, when was the last time I really used it? I'd been using it less and less on a daily basis and only near tax time did I sit down to enter all my receipts. And in that case, I could just break open my desktop version of Quicken on my Powerbook. What about the games? Yeah, I'd miss those, but I've been losing games on every computer platform since the Commodore 64. I could get over that. What about all the utilities? Well, those I would not miss. I realized that a majority of the programs I had on the Palm were just to get the Palm to work correctly. There were power management programs, file management programs, backup programs - all these programs probably should have been built into the Palm OS to begin with. These I could do without. Concerning other third party apps, well, I'd consider jail breaking my iPhone and see where that would take me (I have jail-broke my iPhone and installed a couple dozen apps on it).
Thirdly, there was the "cool" factor. Until I saw the iPhone, I thought the Treo and Palm OS was the best on the market. But Palm has been sitting around and not innovating any more. Other companies were pushing past Palm with all sorts of cool OSes. Now, I was not going to purchase a Windows Mobile device; that was out of the question. I know there are third party syncing programs that will let me sync those devices to my Mac, but I do not like the Windows interface at all. Then there are all the other mobile phone OSes. These are mostly garbage, in my opinion; at least for my purposes. Palm OS had the best features that money could buy. It's just, well, that Palm OS is getting old. Not that old is bad. But "new" is fun. iPhone is new and it looked like fun.
So it was with heavy heart, and a step into the unknown, when I switched to the iPhone platform. I have not regretted it at all. I found that my iPhone is as useful, if not more, than the Palm ever was to me. Sure, I miss all those cool apps for the Palm (hopefully some will get ported to the iPhone later this year) but, overall I think it was a good decision. I've spent much less time troubleshooting my iPhone, even being jail-broke, than I did with my Palm (no duplicate entries, no random hard resets, no re-entering serial numbers, no half-assed web browsers, etc). I actually find myself using the iPhone to get work done, meaningful work. It has become a useful mobile tool for me, much more than my Palm ever was (and my Palm was VERY useful!).
To me, the iPhone is just the evolution of the mobile platform that Palm made popular. The iPhone would not exist if it weren't for the Palm. There will always be a place in my heart for the Palm and it's descendants. I always keep tabs on what Palm is doing and I root for them and wish them well. And, I always keep my Treo 650 charged and ready to go if ever my iPhone fails.
  [From Steviedee>>>
Sydney] Well the long awaited iPhone killer has arrived, and for it's size it sure does pack a punch. If you follow this link you can see it close up next to the iPhone and the size difference is quite considerable considering the iPhone was already quite slim:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/13/htc-touch-diamond-vs-iphone-fight/
I think this device has a lot of potential, especially to those people who either don't want to follow the Apple "trend" or simply just want a smaller device.
But is size the only thing that sells a device? Probably not... Heres Hoping it'll come to Oz..
[From Joe Baughman] I have always been a fan of iSilo ever since I got my first Palm. I
just recently "renovated" my Zire 72 for my son with iSilo and all
sorts of GameFAQ's. He can use it while he is playing on his DS as a
sort of Portable Reference Guide. This works extremely well for
Pokemon because there are so many guides available. He loves being
able to seach for what he information he needs. Now I just need to
start syncing the family calendar for him, then maybe some contacts,
and ebooks... ah, the possibilities! :)
inExpense looks an interesting financial package for your Palm OS device. "Personal finance manager inExpense 2 will help you organize your incomes and expenses in the most intuitive way. Unlike other expense trackers you can use all inExpense 2 features right after installation without even reading the manual. Yet it is very powerful, supporting multiple accounts, currencies, text and graphic reports, desktop synchronization and many other useful features.
From version 2.1.0 inExpense also supports mileage accounts, so you can track your mileage records and convert them to expenses without any external application usage.
inExpense 2 is a great tool for all the latest Palm handhelds and especially for Treo 650. You can enter new records, switch accounts and see reports without even lifting the stylus, all with your 5-way control, which is very important when managing expenses on the go.
See your incomes and expenses in the graphic form or in grouped text reports right on your Palm. inExpense 2 built-in reporting engine supports different data ranges and category filters so you can have your money flow overview always at your eyes.
You have an ability to transfer all your expenses to the desktop on every synchronization in CSV and QIF formats with the conduit included (Windows only). Furthermore inExpense 2 has built-it feature to export data directly to the memory card in CSV format.
To ensure your data safety inExpense 2 offers you a full backup to the memory card feature additionally to the Palm standard backup-on-synchronization. Just a single tap and all your data will be transferred to the memory card to be restored later if needed."
[From Eric Mann] Take a look at SU: 40Thieveses v.2.13 which looks an interesting collection. "This solitaires pack includes 20 games from Solitaires Unlimited collection that have similarity with famous Forty Thieves solitaire. If you like playing solitaire with well thought-out strategy and in the end enjoying completion of a hard task - this collection is for you. 40Thieveses collection includes such games as: Adela, Ali Baba, Demons And Thieves, Eight by Eight, Eighty Thieves, Fortune's Favor, Forty Thieves, Interchange, Josephine, Little Forty, Little Napoleon, Lucas, Marie Rose, Napoleon's Square, Number Ten, Patience's Reward, Sixty Thieves, Squadron, Thieves of Egypt and Waxing Moon." More after the jump.
[From Bob Castillo from Chicago, Illinois (USA)] Hi Sammy, I've always enjoyed the way your website celebrates our mobile lifestyle and the gadgets that enable it rather than crying and complaining about their shortcomings.
Nevertheless, digital convergence does have its problems. My Palm TX is great, I can listen to music, watch movies, and browse the web seamlessly with one thin, light device. Actually, my TX still needs to use my Treo 680 as a modem when I'm not near a wifi hotspot, so "one device" is a small exaggeration. Still, the TX is the device that I interact with the most. That's probably why I notice its limitations so much. One limitation for the TX is its storage capacity. While its 100MB of memory is plenty for a PDA, as a multimedia device, my TX is sorely limited by its 2GB SD card. Only a fraction of my music library and a handfull of my movies and TV shows will fit in those 2GB. Podcasts, which I love, need to stay at home when I'm out with my TX.
So I tried an experiment recently. I dug up my old LifeDrive, Palm's first attempt at building a device that broke out of its PDA and smartphone molds. With its 4GB hard drive, the LD already has twice the storage of my TX. Throw in the TX's 2GB SD Card and the LD has triple the capacity of my TX. Now, that's still not enough for my entire music library but it is enough for a much bigger chunk of my favorite music, movies, and podcasts. Ultimately, the LifeDrive remains a flawed device: it's slow, buggy, and heavy. But it's still a whole lot of fun.
So I guess that my thought for the day is this: (storage) size matters.
[From Doug Wilcox, Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada] I have my favorite public radio broadcasts but often cannot be near a radio to listen to my favorite ones. However, thanks to my “old” minidisc player/recorder I can make unattended digital radio recordings and play them back when it is convenient for me. I do this by connecting a radio it to a digital timer which turns the radio on/off at the appropriate radio broadcast times. Additionally, I hook up the audio input of the minidisc to the audio output of the radio and set the minidisc recorder to synchro-record (the sync-record feature means the minidisc recorder will go into standby mode when the radio is off and there is no audio). I can then go about my daily routine and catch my favorite radio broadcasts at my convenience. I have also found that the minidisc audio quality and ability to jump to various tracks is noticeably better than from cassette tapes. As you can tell in this age of iPods I’m still a Sony minidisc fan.
You are still the best site for getting Palm related information – keep up the great work Sammy.
[From Gilson] Just replaced my TyTN with a Touch Cruise. It’s a nice device, with plenty of memory, a lot slimmer, GPS onboard and TouchFlo… Only to find out that dust is still my enemy!
I’ve already had a few PocketPC/Windows Mobile devices. Actually, it all started with a 3600 series Compaq iPaq. And it was a fine PDA, with a big color screen and bold style that would always turn a few heads wherever I happened to be. But it’s biggest problem was that it wasn’t perfectly sealed and dust would get into it and stick to the screen from the inside! Believe it or not, the usual “cleaning method” consisted of “hair fishing”. I would use a long hair, send it through a small hole from one of the front buttons and move it over the back of the screen to catch dust on the way…
The problem was fixed with the next PDAs, but a new one appeared with the use of screen protectors. Screens seem to be natural dust attractors, no matter how well you clean them, dust will always be attracted before you apply the protector. I have even used a method which consisted of opening the shower hot water and applying it in the bathroom, because moist reduces static electricity.
It was a real pain, but I always had the choice of going protector free and use the stylus carefully to avoid scratches…
But it looks like the manufacturers themselves have recognized they need them because the Cruise comes from the factory with one! And if it is necessary, why couldn’t HTC apply the protector for us? At least they would be able to use one of those “clean rooms” to make sure dust would not stay on the way ;-)

[From Justine at CreativeAlgorithms] Hi Sammy, FYI. Just put up a new post on the subject of Palm OS software sales (to go with the poll I posted last night). http://creativealgorithms.com/blog/
[moblogging from my iPhone]
I saw this article in my local paper this morning about MIT students developing software for Google Android. It's interesting, but implies that the level of software development allowed in Android is a brand new thing. What about Palm and WinMo?
"Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Hal Abelson put that question to about 20 computer science students this semester when he gave them one assignment: Design a software program for cellphones that use Google Inc.'s upcoming Android mobile operating system.
In the process, they revealed the power of an open system like Android to shake up the mobile phone industry, where wireless companies are being pressured to loosen the control they have maintained over what devices do. If the brainstorms of these MIT students are an indication, phones will soon challenge the Internet as a source of innovation.
For these students at least, cellphones should be all about location, location, location. Most of the projects produced by the seven teams of students involved programs that let phones track people's physical place or that of their friends to help them do things and meet up."
More news, this time from the Associated Press, that the iPhone is selling out. Make the jump.
. "Apple Inc. said Monday its online stores in the U.S. and U.K. are sold out of the iPhone, a sign supplies are being winnowed ahead of the launch of the device's next generation featuring faster Internet surfing speeds.
The Cupertino-based company confirmed that the iPhone is out of stock online, but added that brick-and-mortar stores run by Apple and iPhone carriers including AT&T Inc. might still have units available. Apple has been known for clearing out its inventory of a certain product ahead of a major upgrade."
[From Hans] The Boy Genius Report talks about the Blackberry Thunder the much discussed Blackberry touch screen device. "Since we were the first ones to break the news about a touchscreen BlackBerry device, it’s only fitting that we follow up and give y’all the real lowdown on it! This is going to excite a lot of people, but anger many. Are you ready? The BlackBerry Thunder, as it is codenamed now, (all you "reporting" on it as the Storm are incorrect) will launch in Q3 of this year. It is a full touchscreen BlackBerry — no slide out keyboard — with only 4 physical keys. " Make the jump and read at the BGR.

[From Hans] Quick news snippet for you and this time Hans sent me heads up about it and it seems that Windows Mobile 7 could be introduced by the end of this year. "According to a roadmap from device manufacturer MWg, the company plans to have a Windows Mobile 7 device on the market some time in the fourth quarter of this year. That's earlier than this version of this operating system had previously been expected." Read in full.

How do you share photos from your Palm Centro or Treo? Well Paul at the Palm Blog informs us what to do. "How many times have you taken a great picture on your smartphone that was never seen by anyone but you? Most people don’t realize how easy it is to share mobile photos online, but there are a number of ways to do it, such as uploading pictures directly to online photo sharing sites like Flickr." My xv6800 has been a very good companion for my mobile needs. Wifi keeps me connected to my email and web needs, and the big keyboard allows me to start documents and write quick emails so that I can respond without having to be near my computer. It really is a great, stable device.
However, I'm still looking for a good alarm program. A few that I have tried do not actually start a notification with the mp3 sound, but with my default notification sound, which is quiet. That does not wake me up, haha. Any suggestions, please send to isaiahmobile@gmail.com
Thanks, and God bless...
Take a look at the freeware TreoWink which looks useful in-itself. "TreoWink allows you to keep your Treo ON for a specified time, even when there is no user input. This is useful while playing games or viewing maps, for example.
Operation
Invoking TreoWink from the Preferences Panel will display the TreoWink Preferences form. The options are straightforward and self-explanatory.
Here are some key features of "TreoWink":
· Tiny PRC (~ 9 KB), NO hooking to \'hede\', though it uses \'hvch\' notifications to trap key presses."

Hi, every week i go to the library to checkout books for my thesis, however some libraries like mine are huge... ten floors and a complex classification, is not very comfortable pulling out the notebook to type. But with my treo the problem is solved 'cause i search the books that i'm looking for in the main floor and then after obtaining my results i pullout my treo and type the floor and classification with the respective name, so now i have the info i need and a record so if i need the same book twice i search it on my palm, thanks treo. See you soon.

I just promoted Initaite 3.43 to release status. It has a load of optimisations that should help stability.
I have also released 3.51 into beta. This one uses the pictures from your address book as icons for contacts in the Initiate display. Simply update the list once and you'll see faces instead of the contacts icon.
