Update on Flash love for your mobile device
[From Eric Mann] If you're after some flash love for your mobile device then the Gizmodo has this to report, "The good news first: Adobe's promising Flash 10.1 is going to hit smartphones—Android, WebOS, Windows Mobile—and desktops in the "first half" of this year, a slightly less squishy date. And it'll come over the air. The bad part?
Well it's bad for Android, anyway: You're gonna need Android 2.1. At least. Because it provides some access Adobe needs to make the Flash magic happen. So, sorry everything but the Droid and Nexus One, at least for the moment." Read in full.

What will make the iPad explode?

[From Stephen Trew] Sammy, I was wondering if your readers might share their opinions of what will make the iPad explode in popularity like the iPod. What will Apple have to do to make it work? My opinion is this: a micropayment service for magazines and newspapers (just to start with). Imaging 10 pence for daily newspaper or £1 for a monthly magazine. That along with all the rest on offer and it would be a winner.
iPhone in verse

[From Russell Goy
Currimundi - Sunshine Coast - Queensland - Australia] Hi Sammy,
My iPhone is a constant friend
Where you can download lots of apps without end
I can text, twitter, blog, fliq, play games and that's not all
If you try really hard you can even make a phone call
Ordering Domino's Pizza with iPhone has been funky
But I'll now have to make sure I don't get too chunky
And now that Steve has released the all new fad
My scientific take on mobile technology
[From Adam Kozlowski] Hi Sammy, My name is Adam Kozlowski, i'm from Lodz, Poland and i'm a PhD student at the Department of Medical Electronics / Technical University of Lodz. I'm rather a casual mobile device user, my iPhone doesn't have ten screens brimful of applications and my laptop is a trusty old Lenovo. However, the work of research teams here at our department is focused around medicine and helping people with various impairments - mostly it applies to the visually impaired.
It is said that 80% of crucial information is lost to us when we lose sight. It is especially important when we are moving around in typical city environments. That's why we are working on a mobile device, based on a netbook right now, which is fitted with 3G and externally with a GPS receiver, digital compass, pedometer and a chest-level-mounted webcam. The netbook is kept in a small belt bag and keeps track of the position of the visually impaired person and provides route information, warnings etc. It also enables contact with an operator which can help the visually impaired user to get help or additional info.
The extension of that project that we also work on are a special 3D-camera system (chest or head mounted, very light) which enables detection and recognition of various 3D obstacles in front of the visually impaired user. The visual information is then represented in the form of 3D audio signals which warn the user of obstacles, stairs, approaching cars etc.
My part in the project is to provide detection of any form of text from the scene that the camera is seeing and hopefully provide some extra information to the user. More info here - http://naviton.pl/

Palm: Initial Sales At Verizon Slightly Disappointing, Piper Says
[From Eric Mann] According to Barrons sales of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus at Verizon Wireless only to be modest. "Palm (PALM) has seen only “modest” sell through so far for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus at Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD), according to Piper Jaffray analyst T. Michael Walkley. The analyst, who has an Overweight rating on the shares, writes that he is “slightly disappointed” with initial Palm sales at Verizon, but contends that a more aggressive media campaign from Verizon and Palm should bolster demand." I'd like to see the next iPhone look something like this
[From Eric Mann] Apple needs to raise it's game and so does Palm with the Pre and the Pixi range because this looks like being a great looking phone. It's almost half tablet half phone. "The iF Design Awards won't officially be handed out until the big ceremony at CeBIT next month, but some of the winners have now already been announced, and they include a few surprises. One of those is this new Qisda QCM-330 smartphone, which is said to be Android-based, and packs a 4-inch, 1,280 x 1,024 screen (supposedly, although the actual resolution will likely differ given the aspect ratio), WiFi and HSDPA connectivity, a 3 megapixel camera, and an accelerometer, among other, as yet unnamed specs. " Engadget has all the deets but I'd like to see the nex iPhone look something like this.
James Kendrick on why the iPad will succeed
James Kendrick on why the iPad will succeed. "My trip to San Francisco that just ended was a short one, and a very successful one. It is always good to see the great team of GigaOM get together, easily the brightest bunch in the tech world (myself excluded). Now that I have time to reflect on this trip, I have come to realize that a tablet would have made the trip much easier. In the world of mobile tech, easier translates into more fun, and I believe that tablets like the iPad have a big role to play in our lives going forward. They are more fun to use than other computers." Read in full.
Make your own iPad
[From Eric Mann] If you can't wait to be the first to have an iPad [do remember I'm going to fund the cost of an iPad for one lucky PalmAddict reader here] then you may want your own paper cut out, ok so it's not the real thing but it could fool someone when they walk past your desk. My ongoing thoughts of the Nexus One
My regular readers will know that I've been using a Nexus One this last week and my thoughts have been quite positive but of course, like any device, there are often issues. I've been impressed with the battery on the device, it's been durable and has lasted throughout the weekend that I was away. In fact I didn't need to charge it from Friday through to last night inclusive. I did take the charger but it wasn't needed. With my iPhone I would need to charge the device at least once a day.
One of the things I love is being able to stay in contact with people when I'm on the move, now this may be through email or instant messenger, twitter or facebook. The Nexus One seems to do a good job at integrating all your social network data and information together. This may well just be a Android feature but I can keep all the information on my phone desktop through widgets.
The camera is also very good, subscribers to my Twitter or Facebook will have seen pictures taken with my Nexus over the weekend of Paris, the camera is very good indeed, pictures seem sharper in fact a lot sharper than the iPhone.
The trackwheel is quite good, but not perfect, it seems just a little too small for me, I'd have liked to see the new trackpad that the Blackberry devices have now. I'm concerned that heavy use would probably damage or break the ball completely. But we'll see over time.
Still I'm not convinced that the Nexus One will replace my iPhone but I will say that it is probably the best alternative phone / device that I have used and still believe it is strong competition to the iPhone.
Considering Entering this Century
[From Sarah Hirsch] So, I use my cell phone for phone calls. I have a paper planner. I listen to CD’s. I love to read about new technologies and yet for some reason I am really am behind the times with gadgetry. The only mobile device I use regularly is my laptop. I use it constantly at home, and to qualify it as a mobile device, I bring it with me whenever I travel. But my laptop is a bit large, so I should probably invest in a netbook, but now that the iPad has been introduced, I am considering being a hip and with it individual and moving into the future instead of hanging out in ancient technological times.

Tungsten C and the Superbowl
[From Robert Swanson
Viera, Florida] Hello Sammy I hope you are enjoying the day on this busy Superbowl weekend! Just when I thought my trusty Palm Tungsten C was too old and almost worthless with these new IPhones and IPods I found myself today having to work during the Superbowl. Our office is located away from the 3G signal and our computers are blocked from accessing the many different websites featuring the Superbowl. I then took out my trusty Tungsten C and picked up a good Wifi signal from across the street and am able to stream using the Kinoma player and Orb the whole game. This was a lifesaver and I thought it was really nice to know the Tungsten may be old, but it certainly is not out! Go Saints!
How I'm using my iPhone

[From Michael Sendrea
Waterloo, Canada] Hi there,
I have an iPhone, which I use all the time. Mostly at work. I use it for the basic calendar, etc. functionality, but I also have a couple of apps which are very handy: Keynote Presenter, which lets me remote-control a Keynote presentation, and WifiMouse, which lets me control a computer's cursor.
The two box solution
[From Ultan] Hi Sammy from sunny Australia (well not so sunny at the moment as ex-cyclone Olga makes it way thru the North Eastern parts of Australia bringing plenty of much needed rain).
I read PalmAddicts every day and listen to other podcasts that cover mobile products. There seems to me to be growing movement to the "Two box solution". The "Two box solution" is a response to the fact that no one device can meet all needs. Sometimes a small device is needed (say when exercising). Sometimes a bigger device is needed (say when checking email or web surfing).
I use a two box solution and it works for me. I have a Nokia E51 and an iPAQ hx2190. As most people would know, the E51 is a smallish candy bar smart phone. It is very portable and I can take it anywhere. It can access email and web pages over 3G but the screen is to small to be really useful for this. The iPAQ has a bigger screen and it better for watching videos, checking email and web surfing (using the 3G connection on the E51 via bluetooth). So I have the best of both worlds by using the two devices.
The only limitation I find with my set up is that I would like to manage my SMSes on a larger screen. There are some applications for Windows Mobile that allow SMSes on another device to be managed from the Windows Mobile device via bluetooth. Unfortunately, the E51 does not have the bluetooth serial connection that is required by these type of apps.
I'm considering upgrading the iPAQ to a HTC HD2. If I do upgrade, I keep the E51 for everyday telephone activities and use the HD2 for web based activities.
You may wonder why some-one who uses an Symbian device and a Windows Mobile device got involved with a blog covering Palm device. My first PDA was a PalmPilot Professional. I then upgraded to a Palm IIIxe. My next PDA was a Palm E2. I still have all these devices and they still work. I started reading Palm Addicts when I was still using a Palm device. When I went to upgrade the E2 there were no Palm devices that suited my needs. The Palm Treos did not suit because of the smaller screens. I didn't need or want the Treo's keyboard. I think Palm dropped the ball in not releasing a successor to the E2 or TX. I would consider a Palm Pre but it is not available in Australia.
Being Social without all that awkward "Face to Face" time.
[From Frank H. Tano
Spokane, WA] I wasn't much into Social Networks. When something cool was going on in my life or for someone else, I was never at my computer. Since getting my iPhone, I'm suddenly always "on" my social networking accounts. I'm just a hand reach away from posting my updates of interesting things seen or spur of the moment thoughts. I hardly use my home computer any more for these tasks. Additionally, I can keep tabs on my friends no matter where they are in the world. Long lost buddies are now as far away as the pocket of my shorts...hmm, maybe that is awkward.
Bye Bye Treo

[From Robert] Hi Sammy. Love the Site! I sorry to say that I'm finally letting go of my Treo 755p. It has served me well over the past 3 years. I knew that when the PalmOS was EOL'd last February, that my beloved Treo's days were numbered. I've been with PalmOS since the Palm III and have always loved it. Even though my contract ran out last year, I didn't think about replacing it because of the functionality and ease of use. The lack of development has made it harder and harder to keep up and stay current. With the announcement of AT&T allowing Slingplayer Mobile over 3G, I've decided to get an iPhone. While I'm not completely convinced that I will gain more than I will lose, I know that Apple will continue to maintain and upgrade their software and OS. So while I have to sadly say good-bye to Palm, I'll never say goodbye to PalmAddicts. Keep up the great work! Thanks.
More iPhones in the funnies

[From Darcy Boese, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada] Hi Sammy! Sometimes us gadget freaks forget how we can appear to the so-called [and increasingly mis-named ;-)] "normal" people. For a quick chuckle, there's a week's worth of funny at Mother Goose & Grimm's archives http://www.grimmy.com/

Flight Status for Palm OS
Talking about flight status if you have a Palm OS device take a look at Flight Status, weve mentioned this on the site a number of times but Flight Status is a great app. "This is the first program that I have written. It is for getting live flight status for all recent flights. If you know the flight number for your flight all you do is type it in and it returns the information for your flight. (Usually within 10-20 seconds.) However, if you do not know the flight number you may also fill in a small form and it gives you a list of flights for that airline. (Again, usually within 10-20 seconds.) You may then click on one and it tells you information about that flight. The information it gives you is: Departure City, Arrival City, Departure Time,Arrival Time, as well as airspeed in knots, equipment and altitude.
This version has Independence Air as well as other new airlines as well as security wait times for the Atlanta airport. (The only airport that has real-time posting of their security waits.) " More after the jump.
Flightwise Flight Tracker Lite
[From Trev] Want to track a flight on your iPhone? Well have you seen Flightwise Flight Tracker Lite? "This application is geared towards tracking aircraft, and not intended for the casual traveler. It does not provide gate or seating information. It is intended for aviation professionals and enthusiasts. Flight Tracker Lite is fboweb.com's utility for tracking commercial or general aviation flights anywhere within United States airspace (only flights in US and Canadian airspace, including Alaska, Hawaii, parts of the Caribbean, and other US territories are supported at this time).
Users can enter an aircraft tail number or an FAA flight ID, and a tracking map of the aircraft and its current position appears. To find flights out of a specific airport, users can enter a valid 3 or 4 letter FAA airport identifier, and a listing of arrivals and departures in and out of that particular airport will appear. Users can select individual flights to track from the listing.
Additionally, new in version 1.1, users can display a list of flights located within a specified radius of their current location, and keep a history list of recently-tracked flights for quick access.
And now, new in version 1.2, users can take photos of flights or aircraft and upload them to the main fboweb.com website, sharing them with the rest of the world. Great for spotters and enthusiasts." Thanks to Trev for the heads up on this app.

I have found a new use for my iPhone
[From Bill] Greetings Sammy,
I have found a new use for my iPhone. I'm now able to keep my sermon notes in it and use it instead of a notebook when I preach.
I installed the great app "Outliner" to help me with this. I'm able to type in my sermon outline point by point. The app lets me expand or close each point as I need it. I'm loving it.
Hope you have a great time in Paris,
God Bless,
